Deuterium is a natural low abundance stable hydrogen isotope that in high concentrations negatively affects growth of cells. Here, we have studied growth of Escherichia coli MG1655, a wild-type laboratory strain of E. coli K-12, in deuterated glycerol minimal medium. The growth rate and final biomass in deuterated medium is substantially reduced compared to cells grown in ordinary medium. By using

The rapid growth of urban areas and concerns over climate change make it vital to improve the energy sustainability of cities. Understanding the complex interactions within different sectors (sectoral) and localities (spatial) of cities plays a crucial role in improving efficiency and sustainability, which is extremely challenging due to the complex urban morphology. State-of-the-art energy concep

We recently described a method to compute accurate quantum mechanical free energies [Rod, T. H.; Ryde, U. Phys. Rev. Lett. 2005, 94, `138302]. The method, which we term quantum mechanical thermodynamic cycle perturbation (QTCP), employs a molecular mechanics force field to sample phase space and, subsequently, a thermodynamic cycle to estimate QM/MM free energy changes. Here, we discuss the method

Urbanization is a major driver of land-use change but the urban sprawl can be decreased by the densification of cities. On the other hand densification poses a threat to the urban green spaces; areas that have a high delivery of ecosystem services are essential to a high-quality living environment. The aim of this thesis is to illuminate the benefits of urban green space to raise their importance

Halogen bonding is increasingly utilized in efforts to achieve high affinity and selectivity of molecules designed to bind proteins, making it paramount to understand the relationship between structure, dynamics, and thermodynamic driving forces. We present a detailed analysis addressing this problem using a series of protein-ligand complexes involving single halogen substitutions - F, Cl, Br, and

Popular Abstract in Swedish Avhandlingen pressenterar resultat från fyra studerade områden; En undersökning av hur nya kolvrörelser (volym-vevvinkel relationer) påverkar utsläpp, effekt och verkningsgrad; En undersökning av hur kväveoxid påverkar självantändning och knack; En undersökning av hur vätgas och reformerad metanol (RMG) kan utnyttjas som bränsle, dels i vanliga tändstiftsantända (SI) moThe results presented in this thesis can be divided into four areas of investigation: Investigation of the effect of new volume-crank angle relations on engine emissions, power and efficiency; investigation of nitrogen oxides effect on auto ignition and knock in SI engines; investigation of premixed SI and HCCI engine operation with the alternative fuels hydrogen and reformed methanol gas (RMG); s

Compensation behaviour is established for the gas phase hydrodehalogenation of a range of haloarenes over a common Ni/SiO2 catalyst. Analysis of the experimental results delivers an isokinetic temperature (T-iso) at 658 +/- 2K associated with the following reactants: chlorobenzene, 4-chlorotoluene, 3-chlorophenol, 1,3,-dichlorobenzene, 4-chlorophenol, 3,5-dichlorophenol, 1,4-dichlorobenzene, bromo

Ammonia (NH3) is an inorganic substance considered as a promising fuel for power sector decarbonization. As a result of the absence of carbon in its structure, ammonia is capable of producing energy with zero CO2 emissions when burned. However, the combustion of NH3 presents several challenges as a result of its low reactivity and low flame speed as well as the formation of large quantities of nit

Many industries rely heavily on fossil fuels as energy source for their processes which has contributed to a rapid increase in anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the atmosphere causing a harmful effect on the environment. Carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) is a technology pathway that can play an important role in reducing CO2 emissions and contribute to a more circular economy. CCU

Some fundamental physical questions were highlighted through a literature study. The mathematical model for both the initiation of turbulence fields and for the DNS solver was shown. Initial turbulence fields were then formed by the different methods and a comparison between them was made. The comparison included differences in overall pattern through the use of different energy spectrum functions
