Exploring the energy-flexibility potential in the thermal mass of residential buildings

The striving for a sustainable energy system entails an increasing use of renewable energy. Since several renewable energy sources are non-dispatchable (e.g., wind and solar), this development brings challenges in terms of the balance between energy supply and demand. As a result, there is a growing need for demand-side flexibility. The building stock has been highlighted as a promising resource of

Hydrogen intercalation of graphene grown on 6H-SiC(0001)

Atomic hydrogen exposures on a monolayer graphene grown on the SiC(0001) surface are shown to result in hydrogen intercalation. The hydrogen intercalation induces a transformation of the monolayer graphene and the carbon buffer layer to bi-layer graphene without a buffer layer. The STM, LEED, and core-level photoelectron spectroscopy measurements reveal that hydrogen atoms can go underneath the gr

Steel manufacturing clusters in a hydrogen economy – Simulation of changes in location and vertical integration of steel production in Northwestern Europe

With the move to a hydrogen-based primary steel production envisioned for the near future in Europe, existing regional industrial clusters loose major assets. Such a restructuring of industries may result in a new geographical distribution of the steel industry and also to another quality of vertical integration at sites. Both implications could turn out as drivers or barriers to invest in new tec

Effect of T68A/N126Y mutations on the conformational and ligand binding landscape of Coxsackievirus B3 3C protease.

3C protease of Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) plays an essential role in the viral replication cycle, and therefore, emerged as an attractive therapeutic target for the treatment of human diseases caused by CVB3 infection. In this study, we report the first account of the molecular impact of the T68A/N126Y double mutant (MutantBound) using an integrated computational approach. Molecular dynamics simulat

Structure and dynamics of hydrogen sorption in mesoporous MCM-41

Adsorption isotherms taken at temperatures ranging from 20 to 77 K show a large pore volume and surface area of 980 m2 g-1 for the physical adsorption of molecular hydrogen on MCM-41. The adsorbed hydrogen behaves more like a solid than a liquid and isosteric heats of adsorption reveal a heterogenous surface. The evaporation behaviour of the adsorbed hydrogen indicates that the hexagonally packed

Characterization of spark ignition energy transfer at different phases using pressure-rise calorimetry

The paper presents novel studies on the electrical-to-thermal energy deposition to gas at different phases of a spark. The experiments utilized a 10.9 milliliter custom-built spark calorimeter. The energy transfer efficiencies across spark phases—breakdown+arc, and glow are quantified, emphasizing their importance in ensuring robust ignition. An AC capacitive ignition system was considered in the

Homes of the future: Unpacking public perceptions to power the domestic hydrogen transition

Decarbonization in several countries is now linked to the prospect of implementing a national hydrogen economy. In countries with extensive natural gas infrastructure, hydrogen may provide a real opportunity to decarbonize space heating. While this approach may prove technically and economically feasible in the long-term, it is unclear whether consumers will be willing to adopt hydrogen-fueled app

Ground state potential energy surfaces around selected atoms from resonant inelastic x-ray scattering.

Thermally driven chemistry as well as materials' functionality are determined by the potential energy surface of a systems electronic ground state. This makes the potential energy surface a central and powerful concept in physics, chemistry and materials science. However, direct experimental access to the potential energy surface locally around atomic centers and to its long-range structure are la

Evaluating the economic cost of natural gas strategic storage restrictions

The European Commission wants to implement a single market for gas. One of the components of this market is a regulated provision for "security of supply" which consists of rules for the implementation and use of a given reserve stock of gas. We investigate the impact of this policy on the profitability of a storage operator, using data from Denmark and Italy. Keeping storage capacity constant, th

Flow batteries - Impact on fire safety

The need for sustainable renewable energy has been increasing due to the negative impact of non-renewable energy sources. With the unstable and sporadic nature of sustainable renewable energy, flow batteries show immense potential in mitigating these issues. Traditional vanadium and zinc-based flow batteries, as well as new flow battery systems, are now being researched extensively. Vanadium and z

Possible Short-Term Introduction of Hydrogen as Vehicle Fuel / Fuel Additive

The infrastructure for natural gas distribution can provide the possibility of an evolutionary as opposed to revolutionary introduction of hydrogen as an additive to natural gas (Hythane). In this study, pure natural gas and a hythane blend with 24.8% (vol.) hydrogen have been used to fuel a multi-cylinder heavy-duty natural gas engine.. Some comparisons with pure hydrogen operation are also prese

Numerical Simulation of Integrated PEMFC Stack

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are highly integrated to include fuel processing, fuel cell stack, associated heat exchangers and/or post-combustion units. The integration is in terms of not only species flows, but also energy balances. This paper presents a simulation approach to analyze and improve PEMFCs stack and heat rejection load on the radiator. It is based on an overall fuel

Decomposition of hydrogen iodide via wood-based activated carbon catalysts for hydrogen production

In this study, the catalytic activity of wood-based catalysts produced by different activation methods was evaluated for the decomposition of hydrogen iodide (HI) as part of the sulfur-iodine hydrogen production process. The wood-based activated carbon catalysts showed strong improvement in the HI conversion compared to a blank, especially for carbon catalysts activated using H3PO4. Proximate anal

Hybrid power production for a grid with limited capacity

Elektrifieringen förväntas leThere is an urgent need to reduce CO2 emissions in Sweden, primarily caused by industry and the transport sector, which together accounted for nearly 65% of the country's total CO2 emissions in 2023. A key solution to this challenge is the rapid and effective implementation of green electrification, which involves transitioning industry and transportation to electricity and electricity-based f

Association of water and small monocarboxylic acids : matrix isolation FTIR spectrometry study

Infrared spectra of matrix isolated formic, acetic, propionic, and butyric acids mixed with water were obtained. Combining experimental data and theoretical calculations we were able to assign spectral bands arising due to formation of 1:1 complex between water and title acids. The structure of such complexes was elucidated from theoretical and spectral data for the first time. Alternating decreas
