Landfilling in "cells" has become more common in recent years. Different waste streams are guided to different cells, among which the biocell is a landfill designed for biogas production. In this thesis, the dependence of biogas generation on waste composition was investigated. Six 8,000 m3 test cells, with contents ranging from mainly commercial waste to pure domestic waste and equipped with gas

The Pythia program can be used to generate high-energy-physics 'events', i.e. sets of outgoing particles produced in the interactions between two incoming particles. The objective is to provide as accurate as possible a representation of event properties in a wide range of reactions, within and beyond the Standard Model, with emphasis on those where strong interactions play a role, directly or ind

Solid-liquid interfaces are at the heart of a wide variety of phenomena. Their investigation requires experimental techniques with surface sensitivity such scanning probe microscopy and nonlinear optical techniques. In recent years, solid-liquid interfaces have been investigated with a novel approach based on the generation of high frequency acoustic and optical phonons. Due to the sensitivity of

FeCo nanoparticles exsolved from Co-doped Sm0.9FeO3 nanofibers with abundant oxygen vacancies (Vos) are proposed as an efficient electrocatalyst to promote nitrate reduction reaction (NITRR). Such catalyst achieves a maximum Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 90.3 % and a large NH3 yield of 17.2 mg h−1 mg−1cat. at a negatively shifted potential of −0.9 V in 0.1 M PBS with 0.1 M NaNO3, and the alloy nanop

In health, the human heart is able to match ATP supply and demand perfectly. It requires 6 kg of ATP per day to satisfy demands of external work (mechanical force generation) and internal work (ion movements and basal metabolism). The heart is able to link supply with demand via direct responses to ADP and AMP concentrations but calcium concentrations within myocytes play a key role, signalling bo

Kommersiella byggnader genomgår dThe construction and real estate industry in Sweden accounts for approximately one-fifth of the country’s national greenhouse gas emissions. Until today, the majority of the industry’s efforts to reduce emissions have focused on sustainable construction of new buildings and energy efficiency improvements of existing buildings, which has been justified by the fact that these have been the areas con

Chronic pesticide exposure has been linked to several human diseases including cancer, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, cardiovascular disease, and kidney disease. Due to the potential risks to human health, the usage of pesticides has been a controversial topic. Paraquat (PQ), a commonly used pesticide worldwide, has toxic effects due to its generation of reactive oxy

This thesis investigates how the integration of post-combustion carbon capture (PCC) systems would affect combined heat and power (CHP) plant performance, using DWSIM, an open- source process simulation tool. A case study on a CHP plant in southern Sweden was conducted, with models simulated for both baseline and CCS-integrated operation. DWSIM proved accurate within a relative error of under 3 %

Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) are the most promising strategy for reducing the carbon emissions of aviation in the near term, but their combustion behavior is not well understood compared to conventional fuels. This work investigates how different properties of SAF may lead to different emergent combustion behavior by targeting a small set of very distinct fuels. The investigation is carried ou

Lignin, a structurally intricate and heterogeneous phenolic biopolymer, holds considerable promise as a sustainable alternative to petrochemical-derived materials across diverse applications in the energy and materials sectors. However, precise lignin molecular weight and structure determination remains challenging due to its intrinsic tendency to aggregate in solution and the absence of chem

Transition to vehicles with reduced-emission fuels such as Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), LNG (Liquified Natural Gas), Biogas, and Hydrogen gas is an important sustainable approach in the mobility industry. The pressure vessels that are installed as fuel containers on such vehicles are critical components in this transition. However, the Type IV Carbon-Fibre-Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) pressure vess

Temperature is not only a fundamental aspect of everyday life, but it is also an essential metric for thermal conversion systems concerning efficiency, emissions, and component lifetime estimation. Therefore, a vast range of different methods to measure temperature has been developed. The technique of focus in this thesis is lifetime-based surface phosphor thermometry. In phosphor thermometry, one

In this literature review, chaotropic additives in supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) were investigated. Due to the usage of CO2 as mobile phase in supercritical fluid chromatography, the technique was assumed to only be appliable to non-polar analytes. Polar modifiers were able extend the range to include polar analytes. Though it’s still insufficient to separate some sets of polar comp

Agenda 2030 Award goes to Anna Stubbendorff for her research into sustainable diets

Anna Stubbendorff is this year’s winner of the Agenda 2030 Award for sustainability at Lund University. She is being recognised for research showing that when we put climate-friendly food on our plates, it has benefits for both the environment and individual health. In January, Anna Stubbendorff completed her PhD at the Faculty of Medicine with a thesis on sustainable diets and their impact on our
