This paper summarizes the state-of-the-art of the lattice matched GaInP/Ga(In)As/Ge triple-junction solar cell developed at the Solar Energy Institute of UPM (IES-UPM). Different research topics tackled over the last years about this structure are described. As result of this work, an efficiency of ∼ 40% at ∼ 415 × is presented.

Many human birth defects and neurodevelopmental disorders are caused by loss-of-function mutations in a single copy of transcription factor (TF) and chromatin regulator genes. Although this dosage sensitivity has long been known, how and why haploinsufficiency (HI) of transcriptional regulators leads to developmental disorders (DDs) is unclear. Here I propose the hypothesis that such DDs result fr

Balanced structural variants, such as reciprocal translocations, are sometimes hard to detect with sequencing, especially when the breakpoints are located in repetitive or insufficiently mapped regions of the genome. In such cases, long-range information is required to resolve the rearrangement, identify disrupted genes and, in symptomatic carriers, pinpoint the disease-causing mechanisms. Here, w

Two-dimensional neuronal cultures have a limited ability to recapitulate the in vivo environment of the brain. Here, we introduce a three-dimensional in vitro model for human glia-to-neuron conversion, surpassing the spatial and temporal constrains of two-dimensional cultures. Focused on direct conversion to induced dopamine neurons (iDANs) relevant to Parkinson disease, the model generates functi

BACKGROUND: It has been assumed that gastrin stimulates the growth of pancreatic cancer in an autocrine way through co-expression of gastrin and the cholecystokinin-B receptor (CCK-BR). However, pancreatic cancer cell lines established directly from patients have revealed a great heterogeneity in cell proliferation when exposed to CCK, gastrin and their receptor antagonists. The aim of this study

The integration of machine learning (ML) into software operations (MLOps) has significantly increased the demand for data to train and test models, making data sharing and reuse essential to mitigate the high costs of data collection and preprocessing. This study aims to advance the understanding of data sharing within an MLOps context by examining the establishment and governance of a data ecosys

Transforming growth factor-β (TGFβ) is a member of a large family of polypeptide growth factors. TGFβ signals mainly through the intracellular proteins Smad2 and Smad3, which are highly similar in amino acid sequence identity. A number of studies have shown that these proteins, dependent on context, have distinct roles in the TGFβ signaling pathway. TGFβ is one of the most potent inhibitors of hem

RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) are key players regulating RNA processing and are associated with disorders ranging from cancer to neurodegeneration. Here, we present a proteomics workflow for large-scale identification of RBPs and their RNA-binding regions in the mammalian brain identifying 526 RBPs. Analysing brain tissue from males of the Huntington’s disease (HD) R6/2 mouse model uncovered differe

Conference on Loss and Damage 2019

Understanding, measuring and governing Loss and Damage for social and ecological systems LUCSUS organised a conference advancing and exploring L&D from multiple perspectives 30th October - 1st November 2019. While the proliferation of new papers and initiatives relating to L&D is promising, many challenges remain for the scientific and policy communities. These include how L&D from climate change

About

Future medicine and diagnostic tools depend on a deep understanding of cellular and molecular processes, and the capability to translate novel findings into solutions for defined clinical problems. At the Department of Immunotechnology, we apply such strategies to selected focus areas such as immuno-oncology, biomarker identification, immunotoxicology and sensitisation.
