Background: Physical inactivity presents a major public health challenge and is estimated to cause six to ten percent of the major non-communicable diseases. Studies show that immigrants, especially women, have an increased risk of non-communicable diseases compared to ethnic Swedes. Somali immigrant women have increased rates of overweight and obesity, low fitness levels and low levels of cardior

Orchestral playing is a central practice within Western European classical music. Previous research in the field of orchestral musicians’ learning and knowledge has mainly focused on students’ learning orchestral playing. Working conditions and work-related problems were also emphasized in previous studies. This thesis, however, focuses on professional orchestral musicians’ knowledge and learning.

Background To investigate potential cardiovascular and other effects of long-term pharmacological interleukin 1 (IL-1) inhibition, we studied genetic variants that produce inhibition of IL-1, a master regulator of inflammation. Methods We created a genetic score combining the effects of alleles of two common variants (rs6743376 and rs1542176) that are located upstream of IL1RN, the gene encoding t

Laminar burning velocities, S-L, of nitromethane and air flames at 1 atm and initial gas temperatures, T, of 338 K, 348 K, and 358 K were determined using the heat flux method. Measurements were performed in non-stretched flames, stabilized on a perforated plate burner under adiabatic conditions. The comparison of these new experimental data and recent literature results obtained in spherical flam

In order to validate and to gain confidence in two micro-beam techniques: particle induced X-ray emission with nuclear microprobe technique (mu-PIXE) and synchrotron radiation induced X-ray fluorescence in a confocal alignment (confocal SR mu-XRF) for characterization of microscopic particles containing actinide elements (mixed plutonium and uranium) a comparative study has been performed. Inter-c

Dorsal agenesis of the pancreas is a rare congenital disorder. We report a case of a 65-year-old man with mild abdominal pain and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen showed a short pancreas with no pancreatic tissue ventral to the splenic vein. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) visualized the absence of a dorsal duct system and confirmed th

Purpose The benefit of repairing a 75% partial flexor tendon laceration remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to assess the degree of gap formation with and without repair when the 75% lacerated tendon is subjected to cyclic loading. Repair with only a peripheral suture was compared to that using a core and peripheral repair technique. Methods Sixteen deep flexor tendons from sheep

The article presents the third study of a series that has been designed to manifest consciousness and to measure developed competence. The emphasis of the main hypothesis has been put on the student’s ability to adapt to the main idea of a given story and to express his comprehension verbally. In what way the two students of the previous two experiments have been able to accomplish the experimenta

OBJECTIVE: Self-rated health (SRH) is increasingly attracting attention as a predictor of morbidity and mortality while its relation to impaired function has been given less momentum. The aim of this study was to assess the relation between SRH and the risk of being awarded a disability pension and premature death. METHODS: Five birth-year cohorts of middle-aged men were invited to a screening pro

The development of simulation models describing the process dynamics and tuning of the control systems for the multi-cylinder dryer section is presented. This includes models and controls of the condensate system, the sheet moisture content at the reel as well as moisture gradients in the thickness direction of the sheet.

The ability to compare soil chemical data achieved by different chemical extraction methods is a necessity for an efficient long-term monitoring of soils and for comparisons of results from regional soil surveys with differing standard methods. This study compares two common, methods for analysis of soil chemical properties, the combination of soil extraction in 1.0 M NH4Cl and 1.0 M KCl and the s

The reaction pathways in the ammoxidation of propene and of propane over an Sb-V-oxide catalyst were studied by analyzing the modes of transient responses of reactants and products resulting from step changes from inert gas to reactant feed. The pathway from propane to acrylonitrile begins with the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane to form propene. After readsorption, the propene is then transf

Background and Objectives The chemical basis of the subgroups of A is largely unknown. We used thin-layer chromatography immunochemical staining techniques together with a range of characterized monoclonal reagents to analyse glycolipids isolated from a variety of weak subgroups. Materials and Methods Glycolipids isolated from red cells collected from nine genetically defined individuals of the ra

A chemiluminescence inummoassay for the detection of four heart marker proteins: myoglobin, creatine kinase mb [CKmb], troponin I [Tnl], and fatty acid-binding protein [FABP], was designed. The inummoassay was based on enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay [ELISA] and antibodies immobilized in glass capillaries pre-treated with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane. The protein bound to the antibody was detect

The use of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) in cytotoxic conjugates (radionuclides, toxins, or drugs) for targeting tumor cells is restricted due to toxicity in vital organs. Through improved tumor targeting, it is possible to administer larger amounts of such labeled MAbs, thus improving the ability to eradicate tumor cells without increased normal organ toxicity. Extracorporeal affinity adsorption t

This thesis describes experimental studies that aim to stabilise and optimise laser-based particle accelerators. The technique is called laser wakefield acceleration, where electric fields of the order of 102 GV/m accelerate electrons to high energies (⇠102 MeV) over mm-distances in laser-produced plasmas. Among the prerequisites for this acceleration technique to produce electron beams are laser
