Internationellt motsvaras svensk idé- och lärdomshistoria av flera olika forskningsinriktningar ”intellectual history”, ”cultural history” samt ”history of ideas” och ämnet har således en förhållandevis bred forskningsprofil. Här finns en äldrehistorisk inriktning liksom en sedan länge etablerad stark filosofihistorisk tradition och en senare inriktning mot begreppshistoria.
