Union Density in Norway and Sweden: Stability versus Decline

The aim is to explain why union density is not only considerably higher in the Ghent country Sweden than in non-Ghent Norway but also why it has declined much more in Sweden, in particular among blue-collar workers. We show how changes to Swedish unemployment insurance in 2007–2013 were followed by a decline in union density and how white-collar unions were more successful than blue-collar unions

The Security-Development Nexus: Towards a New Framework combining the Need for Security with the Strive for Development?

It is frequently proposed that security and development are inextricably linked. Through history, development and security have constituted separate discourses, but during the 1990s matters of security and development was increasingly being discussed in concert, both in relation to discourse and policy, giving rise to what is commonly referred to as the security-development nexus. When the Millenn

Weathering the Storm: The Role of ESG Performance and Firm Fundamentals in Explaining Stock Returns During the Covid-19 Pandemic

This study investigates whether firms with higher ESG scores showed greater financial resilience measured by reduced downside risk and superior performance outcomes during the COVID-19 market shock specifically in the Nordic region. Conducted by drawing on the theories stakeholder theory, and the risk management hypothesis. It examined if ESG attributes could serve insulatory effects by preserving

Simulation of THz Quantum Cascade Lasers

Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs) have since their invention in 1994 become a crucial source for mid-infrared and THz radiation. Mid-infrared QCLs have achieved room temperature operation while THz QCLs have not. As such, simulations are an important tool in order to achieve a THz QCL operational at room temperature. This work uses a simulation package based on a nonequilibrium Green’s function model Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs) can be designed to emit radiation in the Terahertz (THz) range. For these frequencies, which are faster than electronics and slower than infrared light, there are currently only few devices facing a wide potential of applications. The realization of room temperature operation of THz QCLs would enable practical use in e.g. spectroscopy and public safety. The question i

Segmentation, Classification and Tracking of Objects in LiDAR Point Cloud Data Using Deep Learning

The purpose of this thesis was to explore deep learning methods of segmentation, classification and tracking of objects in LiDAR data. To do this a complete pipeline was developed, consisting of background filtering, clustering, tracking, labeling and visualization. The objects that were focused on were pedestrians, cyclists, cars and animals, in different environments. Background segmentation and

Personality and information use in fish: bolder crucian carps learn faster

Popular science summary: Bolder the brighter – personality affects learning performance in crucian carp Just as humans, many animals have a personality. For example some individuals are more prone to take risks – they are bold, while others prefer to play it safe – being shy. Bold animals increase their risk of being attacked by a predator but may also receive higher gains by being first to a foAbstract Gathering information about the environment is crucial to living organisms as it makes up the foundation upon which decisions are made. In a diverse environment a huge amount of information sources arise. An individual can choose to follow other’s decision (social information use) or to gather its’ own information. Which sources are used and how well they are perceived vary between indi

For Future Reference; Cognitive Empathy is Augmented Over Temporal Distance: An investigation of temporal distance influence on empathy

The goal of this experiments was to investigate a possible link between emotional and cognitive empathy and temporal distance. Along the lines of the Affect dependent time discounting hypothesis (Liberman & Trope, 2000) it is proposed that emotional reactions to empathic events decrease with temporal distance and cognitive reactions to the same empathic events increase. To test this hypothesis

Gesture-Based Extraction of Robot Skill Parameters for Intuitive Robot Programming

Despite a lot of research in the field, only very little experience exists with Teaching by Demonstration (TbD) in actual industrial use cases. In the factory of the future, it is necessary to rapidly reprogram flexible mobile manipulators to perform new tasks, when the need arises, for which a working system capable of TbD would be ideal. Contrary to current TbD approaches, that generally aim to

Fractionation of hardwood using steam explosion and hydrotropic extraction : Process development for improved fractionation

The utilisation of biomass instead of fossil resources is an important alternative for the transition into a sustainable society. Biomass, owing to its primary constituents—cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin—has the potential to replace many products that are produced from fossil resources today, including plastics, textile fibres and fuels. To fully exploit this potential, all of the components

Meet our researchers: Huntington’s disease – a fascinating mystery

Those who carry the mutated gene will develop the fatal Huntington’s disease at some stage in life. The brain disease, which can be inherited across generations, begins slowly and makes it increasingly difficult for sufferes to regulate their feelings, thoughts, and eventually movements. There is still no treatment. However, Huntington researcher and psychiatrist Åsa Petersén is working hard at it
