Förstärkt skydd, för vem? En rättssociologisk studie om lagen om kontakt med barn i sexuellt syfte

In July of 2009 punitive measures were taken by the Swedish government in order to deal with the somewhat new phenomenon known as grooming. The law, called “contact with children for sexual purposes” requires that the adult perpetrator contacts a child, with the purpose of committing sexual offences at a future meeting with the child. Although the law was received with gratitude from many parts of

The Use of Pesticides is “A Global Human Rights Concern”— Pesticide Application Affects the Occupational Safety and Health and the Access to A Healthy Environment of Agricultural Workers

In a working world faced with technological innovation, rampant viruses, environmental and climate change, and a volatile global political situation, agricultural workers face the continuing dual human rights dilemma of occupational health and safety and access to a healthy environment. More than a third of the world's working population is engaged in agriculture, which plays a vital role in d

Indoor relative humidity levels and perceived symptoms in elderly homes in Sweden during winter season

For the sense of well-being and human health, a pleasant indoor environment is essential. Today, people spend about 90 % of their time indoors, meaning that they can be significantly affected by the buildings in which they spend most of their time. Older people are bound to spend more time indoors and also as they belong to the most sensitive age group, their indoor environments as elderly homes m

The tax treatment of foreign investment funds in the Netherlands - An analysis of the compatibility with the free movement of capital

This thesis analyses the tax treatment of foreign investment funds in the Netherlands. Investment funds subject to a special tax scheme are entitled to the reimbursement of withholding tax on the dividends they receive. In order to qualify for the special tax scheme, investment funds have to meet two requirements. The analysis in this thesis is twofold. Both the compatibility of the special tax

Familial Risk of Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome a Nationwide Family Study in Sweden

BACKGROUND: Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome is a rare cardiac disorder that predispose to supraventricular arrhythmias. Prognosis is usually benign, yet there is an increased lifetime risk of sudden death. While typically sporadic, familial clustering has been reported. This study aimed to assess the risk of WPW, arrhythmias, and mortality among siblings of individuals with WPW.METHODS: This

The Ideological Discourse of Putin's Russia : Sovereigntism, Neo-Imperialism, and Fascism

This essay demonstrates that the origin of modern Russian national conservatism lies in the Soviet underground anti-communist and anti-liberal movement, which developed under the strong influence of the theorists of integral traditionalism, fascism, and the Nouvelle Droite. Vladimir Putin's political ontology, based on the idea of the tragedy of Russia and Europe caused by the weakening of their s

Five Political Provocations for Soma Design : A Relational Perspective on Emotion and Politics

Soma design is intimately entangled with the politics, not only of design itself, but of bodies. We combine perspectives from soma design, political theory, and Sara Ahmed’s work The Cultural Politics of Emotions, to develop five political provocations that reflect on the politics of soma design and the possibilities and frictions therein. Inspired by soma design’s roots in somaesthetic philosophy

Agency at a distance : learning causal connections

In a series of papers, we have argued that causal cognition has coevolved with the use of various tools. Animals use tools, but only as extensions of their own bodies, while humans use tools that act at a distance in space and time. This means that we must learn new types of causal mappings between causes and effects. The aim of this article is to account for what is required for such learning of

Ectopic germinal centers in the nasal turbinates contribute to B cell immunity to intranasal viral infection and vaccination

The nasal mucosa is the first immunologically active site that respiratory viruses encounter and establishing immunity at the initial point of pathogen contact is essential for preventing viral spread. Influenza A virus (IAV) in humans preferentially replicates in the upper respiratory tract (URT) but mouse models of infection result in lower respiratory tract infection. Here, we optimize IAV inoc

Where can I find justice? : The changing relationship between the courthouse and the city

After a long period of being constructed as anonymous administration complexes, first instance courts are once again being built as emblematic elements of the city, designed by renowned architects and rising up on central plots adjacent to train stations, headquarter buildings and exclusive residential areas. This is happening at a time of centralisation, upsizing and property privatisation, and w

Development Research Day

About Development Research DayHow it all startedThe Development Research Day is an interdisciplinary arrangement that was initiated in order to form a meeting ground for all researchers and students at Lund University who share an interest in development issues. The first Development Research DayThe event was launched in 2002 by the Department of Political Science at Lund University. Since then, th

Extracorporeal immunoadsorption therapy on rats. In vivo depletion of specific antibodies

A technique for extracorporeal immunoadsorption of circulating specific antibodies from the plasma of rats is described. Catheterization of rats was performed using the carotid and the jugular blood vessels. The rats were treated non-anaesthetized. Blood was pumped continuously through a hollow-fibre plasma filter at a rate of 1.5 ml/min and plasma was separated and passed through an adsorbent col

Low micromolar inhibitors of galectin-3 based on 3'-derivatization of N-acetyllactosamine.

A strategy for generating potential galectin inhibitors was devised based on derivatization at the C-3′ atom in 3′-amino-N-acetyllactosamine by using structural knowledge of the galectin carbohydrate recognition site. A collection of 12 compounds was prepared by N-acylations or N-sulfonylations. Hydrophobic tagging of the O-3 atom in the N-acetylglucosamine residue with a stearic ester allowed rap

Conclusion : A new tale for the green city?

Urban greening is often thought of as a tool for aligning developmental and environmental goals, but it is also a tool for magnifying the city. It exposes and expands almost invisible dimensions of our hyperlocal environment. Greening has become one of the strongest mechanisms for transforming these preferences from a figurative guide for action into the literal cities the authors inhabit. In the

Massive intein content in Anaeramoeba reveals aspects of intein mobility in eukaryotes

Inteins are self-splicing protein elements found in viruses and all three domains of life. How the DNA encoding these selfish elements spreads within and between genomes is poorly understood, particularly in eukaryotes where inteins are scarce. Here, we show that the nuclear genomes of three strains of Anaeramoeba encode between 45 and 103 inteins, in stark contrast to four found in the most inte

Rotational CARS for simultaneous measurements of temperature and concentrations of N-2, O-2, CO, and CO2 demonstrated in a CO/air diffusion flame

Rotational coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) has over the years demonstrated its strong potential to measure temperature and relative concentrations of major species in combustion. A recent work is the development and experimental validation of a CO2 model for thermometry, in addition to our previous rotational CARS models for other molecules. In the, present work, additional calibrati

Epilogue: History in Pompeii

Two-Dimensional Electronic Spectroscopy Reveals Ultrafast Energy Diffusion in Chlorosomes.

Chlorosomes are light-harvesting antennae that enable exceptionally efficient light energy capture and excitation transfer. They are found in certain photosynthetic bacteria, some of which live in extremely low-light environments. In this work, chlorosomes from the green sulfur bacterium Chlorobaculum tepidum were studied by coherent electronic two-dimensional (2D) spectroscopy. Previously unchara
