Simultaneous rejection of signals below and above the Nyquist frequency

This paper studies the disturbance rejection problem for sampled-data control systems, where disturbance signal occurs below and above the Nyquist frequency simultaneously. Two discrete-time controllers are designed via H∞ optimal control in two steps; at first a controller is designed to reject the low-frequency components, and then we construct the generalized plant including the first controlle

Head-initial postpositional phrases in North Sámi

Most adpositions in North Sámi are postpositions – they follow their complements in the surface order. Nouns, on the other hand, invariably precede their complements. Strikingly, when the nominal complement of a postposition has its own complement, the complement of the noun follows after the postposition, so that the nominal phrase ends up being discontinuous, split by the postposition. This is an

Similarities and differences in the functions of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and sex as self-injury (SASI)

Differences and similarities were studied in the functions of two differentself-injurious behaviors (SIB): nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and sex as selfinjury(SASI). Based on type of SIB reported, adolescents were classified in oneof three groups: NSSI only (n = 910), SASI only (n = 41), and both NSSI andSASI (n = 76). There was support for functional equivalence in the two formsof SIB, with auto

Measurement of differential cross sections of isolated-photon plus heavy-flavour jet production in pp collisions at s=8 TeV using the ATLAS detector

This Letter presents the measurement of differential cross sections of isolated prompt photons produced in association with a b-jet or a c-jet. These final states provide sensitivity to the heavy-flavour content of the proton and aspects related to the modelling of heavy-flavour quarks in perturbative QCD. The measurement uses proton–proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV record

Search for an invisibly decaying Higgs boson or dark matter candidates produced in association with a Z boson in pp collisions at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for an invisibly decaying Higgs boson or dark matter candidates produced in association with a leptonically decaying Z boson in proton–proton collisions at s=13 TeV is presented. This search uses 36.1 fb−1 of data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. No significant deviation from the expectation of the Standard Model backgrounds is observed. Assuming the Standar

First measurement of jet mass in Pb–Pb and p–Pb collisions at the LHC

This letter presents the first measurement of jet mass in Pb–Pb and p–Pb collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV and sNN=5.02 TeV, respectively. Both the jet energy and the jet mass are expected to be sensitive to jet quenching in the hot Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) matter created in nuclear collisions at collider energies. Jets are reconstructed from charged particles using the anti-kT jet algorithm and reso

Functional role of extracellular vesicles and lipoproteins in the tumour microenvironment

Cancer can be regarded as an invasive organ that exhibits unique plasticity provided by coordinated, cancer cell-stromal cell communication in the tumour microenvironment. Typical stress factors in the tumour niche, such as hypoxia and acidosis, are major drivers and modulators of these events. Recent findings reveal an important role of extracellular vesicles and lipoproteins in cancer cell adapt

Total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy to study GLUT4 trafficking

Total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy is a powerful method that allows examination of plasma membrane close events in real time. The last decade, the method has successfully been used to explore GLUT4 translocation in adipocytes. Here, we describe the procedure for studying GLUT4 trafficking using TIRF microscopy in isolated primary adipocytes.

Comparison of hospital-based and hospital-based home care at diabetes onset in children

The aim was to compare two different regimens for children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, hospital-based care and hospital-based home care (HBHC), in terms of the child's metabolic control, episodes of severe hypoglycaemia, the disease's impact on family and the parents' health-related quality of life, one year after diagnosis. The study had a randomised controlled design and included 60 children

Expression and purification of rat glucose transporter 1 in Pichia pastoris

Large amounts of pure and homogenous protein are a prerequisite for several biochemical and biophysical analyses, and in particular if aiming at resolving the three-dimensional protein structure. Here we describe the production of the rat glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1), a membrane protein facilitating the transport of glucose in cells. The protein is recombinantly expressed in the yeast Pichia past

Glucose transport activity measured in giant vesicles

Incorporation of membrane proteins and internal reporter systems directly into giant vesicles, during their formation from a hydrogel surface, has emerged as a promising new concept in membrane protein characterization. Here, we provide the detailed protocol for a glucose transporter activity assay based on giant vesicles containing a fluorescent enzyme-linked reporter system internally. This assa

Writing intervention in university students with normal hearing and in those with hearing impairment : Can observational learning improve argumentative text writing?

Observational learning has shown to be a successful intervention for writing. Up until now, however, studies have only been performed with normal-hearing participants, usually highschool or university students. Additionally, there have been conflicting results in whether subjective text quality correlates with one or more objectively measured text characteristics. In this study, we measured the ef

Retrieval of daily gross primary production over Europe and Africa from an ensemble of SEVIRI/MSG products

The main goal of this paper is to derive a method for a daily gross primary production (GPP) product over Europe and Africa taking the full advantage of the SEVIRI/MSG satellite products from the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) sensors delivered from the Satellite Application Facility for Land Surface Analysis (LSA SAF) system. Special attention i

Parent–infant interactions looking for instances of volitional social gaze versus reflexive gaze – an observational study

Very early precursors of disrupted social behaviours are significant to understanding the possibility of mitigating or changing behaviours through interventions. Spontaneous play situations between infant and parent in two groups of infants aged 8.5–9 months were observed. First, a large number of videos were analysed to develop an observational schedule of play behaviour. Second, 135 videos were

Fördjupad uppföljning av Flagghusen : Studie av inneklimat, ventilationssystem och vädringsbeteende

In new built apartments buildings with modern mechanical supply and exhaust ventilation, window opening was reported by a majority of the residents. A follow‐up study of the physical indoor environment and the perceived environment by the residents was therefore performed. The follow‐up study is included in a project which also comprises of a follow‐up of the energy use and factors related to this

Decoding of individual finger movements from surface EMG signals using vector autoregressive hierarchical hidden Markov models (VARHHMM)

In this paper we present a novel method for predicting individual fingers movements from surface electromyography (EMG). The method is intended for real-time dexterous control of a multifunctional prosthetic hand device. The EMG data was recorded using 16 single-ended channels positioned on the forearm of healthy participants. Synchronously with the EMG recording, the subjects performed consecutiv

Impact of activated sludge ozonation on filamentous bacteria viability and possible added benefits

Ozone was applied to return activated sludge in full-scale to study how ozone impacts filamentous bacteria viability (Live/Dead®). Additionally, the ozonated sludges were subjected to anaerobic digestion trials and analysis of micropollutants. Ozone treatment (3-4.8 g O3/kg TSS) improved the settling properties of the sludge by lowering the diluted sludge volume with 7-35%.
