Influence of contacts and applied voltage on a structure of a single GaN nanowire
Semiconductor nanowires (NWs) have a broad range of applications for nano-and optoelectronics. The strain field of gallium nitride (GaN) NWs could be significantly changed when contacts are applied to them to form a final device, especially considering the piezoelectric properties of GaN. Investigation of influence of the metallic contacts on the structure of the NWs is of high importance for thei
Pediatric Micra leadless pacemaker implantation via the internal jugular and femoral vein : A single-center, US experience
Background: In the pediatric population, conventional transvenous and epicardial pacemaker systems carry complications such as lead distortion due to growth/activity, in addition to other lead/pocket complications. Materials & methods: A retrospective review of pediatric leadless pacing at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital from 2018 to 2020 was performed. Rationale for pa
Students' use of justifications in socioscientific argumentation
Research focusing on students' argumentation in socioscientific issues (SSI) shows that students tend to base their arguments on values rather than knowledge. This study explores Swedish upper secondary chemistry students' written argumentation. The data consists of student texts written at the end of an intervention designed to develop skills related to high quality argumentation. The results sho
Sustainable public procurement in large infrastructure projects—policy implementation for carbon emission reductions
The infrastructure construction sector is a significant source of carbon emissions, and more stringent procurement requirements are central to meeting reduction targets in this demand-led and project-based industry. This paper aims to analyze the implementation of international policies for reducing carbon emissions in infrastructure construction, focusing on the interaction between policy ambitio
FLoPAD-GRU : A Flexible, Low Power, Accelerated DSP for Gated Recurrent Unit Neural Network
Recurrent neural networks (RNNs) are efficient for classification of sequential data such as speech and audio due to their high precision on tasks. However, power efficiency, the required memory capacity and bandwidth requirements make them less suitable for battery powered devices. In this work, we introduce FLoPAD-GRU: a system on a chip (SoC) for efficient processing of gated recurrent unit (GR
Microbe-mediated mn oxidation—a proposed model of mineral formation
Manganese oxides occur in a wide range of environmental settings either as coatings on rocks, sediment, and soil particles, or as discrete grains. Although the production of biologically mediated Mn oxides is well established, relatively little is known about microbial-specific strategies for utilizing Mn in the environment and how these affect the morphology, structure, and chemistry of associate

The effect of multisite phosphorylation on the conformational properties of intrinsically disordered proteins
Intrinsically disordered proteins are involved in many biological processes such as signaling, regulation, and recognition. A common strategy to regulate their function is through phosphorylation, as it can induce changes in conformation, dynamics, and interactions with binding partners. Although phosphorylated intrinsically disordered proteins have received increased attention in recent years, a
Assessing the feasibility of archetypal transition pathways towards carbon neutrality : A comparative analysis of European industries
Analyses of the future for manufacturing and heavy industries in a climate constrained world many times focus on technological innovations in the early stages of the value chain, assuming few significant changes are plausible, wanted, or necessary throughout the rest of the value chain. Complex questions about competing interests, different ways of organising resource management, production, consu
Reorienting the West African craton in Paleoproterozoic–Mesoproterozoic supercontinent Nuna
The location of the West African craton (WAC) has been poorly constrained in the Paleoproterozoic–Mesoproterozoic supercontinent Nuna (also known as Columbia). Previous Nuna reconstruction models suggested that the WAC was connected to Amazonia in a way similar to their relative position in Gondwana. By an integrated paleomagnetic and geochronological study of the Proterozoic mafic dikes in the An

Nitrogen transport in a tundra landscape : the effects of early and late growing season lateral N inputs on arctic soil and plant N pools and N2O fluxes
Understanding N budgets of tundra ecosystems is crucial for projecting future changes in plant community composition, greenhouse gas balances and soil N stocks. Winter warming can lead to higher tundra winter nitrogen (N) mineralization rates, while summer warming may increase both growing season N mineralization and plant N demand. The undulating tundra landscape is inter-connected through water
What Happened to the Incomes of the Rich during the Great Levelling? Evidence from Swedish Individual-level Data, 1909–1950
Much of the income equalization that took place during the first half of the twentieth century was driven by shifts in the shares of the incomes of the rich, such as the top 1 percent. But the available studies using tabulated data have not been wholly able to account for the relative decline in top earners’ incomes. In this paper, we present the first evidence on the composition of the top groups

Two pollen-based methods of Eemian climate reconstruction employed in the study of the Żabieniec-Jagodne palaeolakes in central Poland
The aim of the present study was to estimate the range of climate variability in Central Poland during the Eemian Interglacial (MIS 5e). High resolution pollen records are available for all seven RPAZs typical of this interglacial in Central Europe. These pollen records were used to estimate total annual precipitation and mean annual temperature, as well as the mean temperatures of the warmest and
Hereditary cystatin C (gamma-trace) amyloid angiopathy of the CNS causing cerebral hemorrhage
Hereditary CNS amyloid angiopathy occurring in Icelanders is the first human disorder known to be caused by deposition of cystatin C amyloid fibrils in the walls of the brain arteries leading to single or or multiple strokes with fatal outcome. One or more affected members have been verified by histological examination in 8 families containing 127 affected. These originated from the same geographi
Operando Stability Studies of Ultrathin Single-Crystalline IrO2(110) Films under Acidic Oxygen Evolution Reaction Conditions
The anodic corrosion behavior of 50 Å thick single-crystalline IrO2(110) films supported on slightly bulk-reduced TiO2(110) single crystals is studied during acidic water splitting by a unique combination of operando techniques, namely, synchrotron-based high-energy X-ray reflectivity (XRR) and surface X-ray diffraction (SXRD) together with highly sensitive inductively coupled plasma mass spectrom
The prevalence of renal amyloidosis of the AA-type in a series of 1,158 consecutive autopsies
To determine the prevalence of renal amyloidosis of the AA-type in a defined population, formalin-fixed specimens from the kidneys of all the cases autopsied in 1983 at The General Hospital of Malmö, Sweden, were investigated using immunohistochemical techniques. Amyloid deposits of protein AA were found in 10 of 1,158 investigated cases and the calculated prevalence was 0.86 per cent. The mean ag
