Energy, space, and movement : Toward a framework for theorizing energy justice

This paper attempts to assemble a conceptual framework for understanding to what extent an energy technology is simply a way of putting nature to work, and to what extent it is a way of putting other segments of global society to work. The turn to fossil energy reversed the relation between energy and space, as fossil fuels henceforth propelled new transport technologies that provided access to in

Optimal Content Retrieval Latency for Chunk Based Cooperative Content Replication in Delay Tolerant Networks

Modern content distribution networks face an increasing multitude of content generators. In order to reach the minimal content retrieval latency in the content distribution networks, content shall be disseminated towards consumers based on its popularity taken from the content distribution networks. This, Combined with dividing media into chunks (heterogeneous valuation of information) and contact

Trapping of Cell-Laden Hyaluronic Acid-Acrylamide Hydrogel Droplets using Bulk Acoustic Waves

In this paper an acoustofluidic system to trap hydrogel droplets is shown. The presented trapping method is label-free, biocompatible and operated in non-contact mode. The results show that the droplets can be trapped at flow rates up to 76 μL/min which corresponds to an average flow speed of 3.2 mm/s. Moreover, it is shown that the droplets can be trapped for several hours, thus allowing for stud

Towards real-time ADMM for linear MPC

We present a novel predictive control scheme for linear constrained systems that uses the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) for online optimization. In contrast to existing works on ADMM-based model predictive control (MPC), we only consider a single ADMM-iteration in every time step. The resulting real-time ADMM scheme is tailored for embedded and fast MPC implementations. The ma

Exploring causality of the association between smoking and Parkinson's disease

BACKGROUND: The aim of this paper is to investigate the causality of the inverse association between cigarette smoking and Parkinson's disease (PD). The main suggested alternatives include a delaying effect of smoking, reverse causality or an unmeasured confounding related to a low-risk-taking personality trait. METHODS: A total of 715 incident PD cases were ascertained in a cohort of 220 494 indi

Between Malthus and the industrial take‐off: regional inequality in Sweden, 1571–1850

The causes and extent of regional inequality in the process of economic growth are at the core of historical economic research. So far, much attention has been devoted to studying the role of industrialization in driving regional divergence. However, empirical studies on relatively unequal countries such as Italy and Spain show that inequality was already high at the outset of modern industrializa

Moisture safety of wooden buildings – design, construction and operation

During the last decade, building in wood has increased, mainly due to environmental awareness and targets to decrease the carbon footprint originated from the production of building materials. New technologies such as CLT (cross laminated timber) have accelerated the construction of multi-story wooden buildings. The CLT structure has been used both for housing and offices. Due to the extensive siz

Unveiling the process of sustainable renovation

Thuvander, L, Femenias, P, Mjörnell, K, Meiling, P, Unveiling the process of sustainable renovation. Published in open access journal Sustainability 2012, 4(6), in May 2012.Renovation processes are complex and there is a risk of underestimating architectural, cultural, and social values in favor of exterior and interior upgrading, energy efficiency and financing. A synthesized, systematic process is needed for making decisions about renovation measures. The aim of this paper is to survey decision-making procedures aimed for sustainable renovation. We inventory existi

The Power Resource Theory Revisited : What Explains the Decline in Industrial Conflicts in Sweden?

This paper revisits the Power Resource Theory (PRT) by testing one of its more influential claims: the relation between the strength of the labor movement and the reduction of industrial conflicts. Using panel data techniques to analyze more than 2,000 strikes in 103 Swedish towns we test whether a shift in the balance of power towards Social Democratic rule was associated with fewer strikes. The

Integrin α10, a novel therapeutic target in glioblastoma, regulates cell migration, proliferation, and survival

New, effective treatment strategies for glioblastomas (GBMs), the most malignant and invasive brain tumors in adults, are highly needed. In this study, we investigated the potential of integrin α10Β1 as a therapeutic target in GBMs. Expression levels and the role of integrin α10Β1 were studied in patient-derived GBM tissues and cell lines. The effect of an antibody-drug conjugate (ADC), an integri

Semiconductor Nanowires: Characterization and surface modification

Inom elektroniken utgör halvledarna den viktigaste beståndsdelen i till exempel datorer, The topic of III-V nanowires is still, after more than two decades, a growing and lively research area. The areas of application are wide and contain such important topics as energy harvesting, cheap and efficient lighting, high efficiency detectors and new types of electronics. III-V materials offer properties superior to the widely used Si. They can have considerably higher carrier mobility whic

Monitoring CAR-T-Cell Therapies Using the Nordic Healthcare Databases

Following intense research efforts, modulation of the immune system has finally proved to be a viable approach for treating malignant disease. Recently, chimeric antigen receptor redirected T cells have achieved promising outcomes in patients with B-cell malignancies and they are currently also being investigated in other haematological malignancies, solid tumours and viral infections. Compared wi

Search for beyond standard model physics with high-pT leptons

This thesis covers four different topics related to the physics analysis in the ATLAS experiment that uses protonproton collisions data provided by the Large Hadron Collider. The first topic is focused on the numerical simulation of the Transition Radiation Tracker which is one of the ATLAS tracking detectors. The implementation of the alternative Argon based gas mixtures used in the drift tubes i

Quantitative flow cytometry to understand population heterogeneity in response to changes in substrate availability in escherichia coli and saccharomyces cerevisiae chemostats

Microbial cells in bioprocesses are usually described with averaged parameters. But in fact, single cells within populations vary greatly in characteristics such as stress resistance, especially in response to carbon source gradients. Our aim was to introduce tools to quantify population heterogeneity in bioprocesses using a combination of reporter strains, flow cytometry, and easily comprehensibl

New macrobenthic cycloneuralians from the Fortunian (lowermost Cambrian) of South China

Although morphology-based phylogenetic analyses and molecular data suggested that the cycloneuralians might have emerged in the Ediacaran Period, the oldest known fossil remains of cycloneuralians were first reported from the Cambrian Fortunian Stage of South China, and to date four genera and species as well as nine indeterminate forms have been described. Here, we report the latest discoveries o

Collective Estimation of Multiple Bivariate Density Functions With Application to Angular-Sampling-Based Protein Loop Modeling

This article develops a method for simultaneous estimation of density functions for a collection of populations of protein backbone angle pairs using a data-driven, shared basis that is constructed by bivariate spline functions defined on a triangulation of the bivariate domain. The circular nature of angular data is taken into account by imposing appropriate smoothness constraints across boundari

Prospective evaluation of coronary FLOW reserve and molecular biomarkers in patients with established coronary artery disease the PROFLOW-trial : Cross-sectional evaluation of coronary flow reserve

Background: Survivors of myocardial infarction (MI) are at high risk of new major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). Coronary flow reserve (CFR) is a strong and independent predictor of MACE. Understanding the prevalence of impaired CFR in this patient group and identifying risk markers for impaired CFR are important steps in the development of personalized and targeted treatment for high-risk
