The EUROBALL neutron wall - design and performance tests of neutron detectors
The mechanical design of the EUROBALL neutron wall and neutron detectors, and their performance measured with a Cm-246,Cm-248 fission source are described. The array consists of 15 pseudohexaconical detector units subdivided into three, 149 mm high, hermetically separated segments and a smaller central pentagonal unit subdivided into five segments. The detectors are filled with Bicron BC501A liqui
Quantum interference between multi photon absorption pathways in organic solid
We demonstrate spatial interference fringe pattern by simultaneous one- and three-photon absorption of UV and near-IR femitosecond pulses in thin film organic solid at room temperature. We use organic dendrimers that are specially designed to have strong fluorescence and very large three-photon absorption cross-section. High fringe visibility allows the quantum interference to be observed by eye.

Improved preparation technique of cervical carcinoma for flow cytometric DNA analysis with tissue disintegration in hydrochloric acid
An one-step procedure using a nuclear isolation medium containing propidium iodide has been found to be a suitable preparation technique for flow cytometric DNA analysis in breast cancer samples. In the case of cervical squamous carcinoma, a pretreatment with HCl seems to be a methodological improvement. One advantage with the HCl modification is that some "false" near-diploid cell populations are
Pain following Surgery: Management, Outcome, and Prediction
Despite advances in the treatment of postoperative pain, nearly 30% of patients experience moderate to severe pain following major surgery. The present thesis includes four studies intended to evaluate important aspects of postoperative pain. In studies I and II, patient-controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA, n = 1,670), using local anesthetics and morphine, was associated with significantly lower
Free N-acetylneuraminic acid in tissues in Salla disease and the enzymes involved in its metabolism
Salla disease is a lysosomal storage disorder of unknown etiology, characterized biochemically by increased urinary excretion of N-acetylneuraminic acid. This compound has now been shown to occur in abnormally large amounts in liver and cultured skin fibroblasts from these patients. Quantification of N-acetylneuraminic acid was performed using a new gas-chromatography/mass spectrometric single-ion

How to predict nephropathy in type 1 diabetic patients - Routine data or provocation by exercise testing?
Objective: Do exaggerated increases in blood pressure and albuminuria during exercise occur earlier than microalbuminuria and which type of test is most predictive of diabetic nephropathy? Material and Methods: A total of 33 insulin-dependent normoalbuminuric men (mean duration of diabetes 14 years; mean age 28 years) and 34 age-matched apparently healthy control subjects were studied. Urinary alb
Smoking as a determinant of the geographical pattern of cardiac events among women in an urban population
Background: Smoking is the major risk factor for cardiac events in younger women and is most common in groups with the least favourable socioeconomic circumstances. Objective: To assess to what extent geographical differences in the female incidence of myocardial infarction in the city of Malmo in Sweden can be accounted for by smoking and to what extent intra-urban variances of smoking are relate
Channel Related Optimization of Wireless Communication Systems
This thesis deals with different optimization problems in the design of wireless communication systems. It is mainly directed to the design of systems based on multicarrier techniques and orthogonal frequency division multiplex, OFDM, but some of the problems apply to single carrier systems as well. The influence of different pilot patterns is analyzed when pilot symbol assisted modulation, PSAM,
Communication in Games and Decision Making under Risk
Popular Abstract in Swedish Avhandlingen är indelad i två delar. The first part studies communication in games and the second part investigates individual decision making under risk. Chapters 2 – 4, co-authored with Ola Andersson, investigate communication and renegotiation in dynamic games. In Chapter 2, Bertrand supergames with non-binding communication are used to study price formation and stability of collus

Enhancing performance in anaerobic high-solids stratified bed digesters by straw bed implementation
Anaerobic high-solids single-stage stratified bed digesters have been found to be simple and flexible design candidates for small-scale reactors located in medium- to low-technology environments. In the present study, wheat straw was used as the starter material for the stratified bed. Upon green mass feeding, the anaerobically stabilised straw bed functioned both as a biofilm support and as a par

Simulated sinoatrial exit blocks explained by circle map analysis
In an accompanying study, it was seen that most cardiac arrhythmias that were simulated during poor intercellular coupling in the sinus node, were the same as those obtained in a two-element system in which one element suffered from a strong leakage current. This element corresponds to the sinus node periphery and is thus the one which feeds the atrium. In this paper, the interior element was repl
Frequency of the WHO metabolic syndrome in European cohorts, and an alternative definition of an insulin resistance syndrome
BACKGROUND: To describe the frequency, in some European populations, of the World Health Organisation (WHO) defined metabolic syndrome and to compare the frequency of this syndrome with an alternative definition for non-diabetic subjects, called the insulin resistance syndrome proposed by the European Group for the Study of Insulin Resistance (EGIR). METHODS: Investigators of eight European studie
