Jag är född på Island, blev M.A. i isländsk och allmän lingvistik i Reykjavik 1983, fil.dr i nordiska språk vid LU 1989, lektor i Kiel 1985-88, lektor, docent och professor i Reykjavik 1994-2002, verksam vid LU från 2002; har varit gästprofessor i bl.a. Rom, Venedig, Wien och Dharmkot i Indien. Mitt centrala forskningsområde har varit allmän syntaxteori och isländsk och germansk syntax. Jag har länge varit intresserad av sambandet mellan morfologi och syntax och av sambandet mellan syntax och kontext och detta har gett mig anledning att speciellt studera grammatiska kategorier som person, numerus, genus, kasus, tempus och modus.
