The Stressful Memory Assessment Checklist for the Intensive Care Unit (SMAC-ICU) : Development and Testing

Stressful or traumatic memories of an intensive care stay may lead to long-term psychological morbidity. Memory assessment is therefore essential to aid in the patients’ recovery process. Acknowledging the large cohort of post ICU patients during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, a simple tool for the evaluation of ICU memories is needed. The aim of this study was, therefore, to develop and test the validi

Brief admission by self-referral for individuals with self-harm and suicidal ideation : a qualitative study based on focus groups exploring relatives' experiences

PURPOSE: Brief Admission by self-referral (BA) is a standardized crisis-management intervention for individuals with self-harm and risk for suicide. This study explored relatives' experiences of BA. Relatives' perspectives may contribute to an increased understanding of the effects of BA given the relatives' role as support and informal caregivers as well as being co-sufferers.METHODS: Fourteen re

Hybrid speciation driven by multilocus introgression of ecological traits

Hybridization allows adaptations to be shared among lineages and may trigger the evolution of new species1,2. However, convincing examples of homoploid hybrid speciation remain rare because it is challenging to demonstrate that hybridization was crucial in generating reproductive isolation3. Here we combine population genomic analysis with quantitative trait locus mapping of species-specific trait

Overview of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) for General Cardiologists

Postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a chronic autonomic disorder characterized by excessive heart rate elevation upon standing or head-up tilt, in the absence of orthostatic hypotension. This debilitating condition affects primarily young to middle-aged individuals, particularly women, and substantially influences quality of life. The main presenting symptoms are lightheadedness, palpitations,

Insurance Voting in the Centre: An Experimental Approach

Recent research suggests that to help their preferred coalition win an election, voters are willing to vote for a political party other than their preferred choice. In this field, voting for smaller parties under proportional representation is an under-studied feature. A crucial factor to estimate the chances for smaller parties is polls. In this study, we analyze the influence of opinion polls on

Pathophysiology of syncope : current concepts and their development

Syncope is a symptom in which transient loss of consciousness occurs as a consequence of a self-limited, spontaneously terminating period of cerebral hypoperfusion. Many circulatory disturbances (e.g. brady- or tachyarrhythmias, reflex cardioinhibition-vasodepression-hypotension) may trigger a syncope or near-syncope episode, and identifying the cause(s) is often challenging. Some syncope may invo

The gut microbiota and diabetes : research, translation, and clinical applications – 2023 Diabetes, Diabetes Care, and Diabetologia Expert Forum

This article summarises the state of the science on the role of the gut microbiota (GM) in diabetes from a recent international expert forum organised by Diabetes, Diabetes Care, and Diabetologia, which was held at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes 2023 Annual Meeting in Hamburg, Germany. Forum participants included clinicians and basic scientists who are leading investigators in

Promoting public sector innovation: who does what, when and how?

A strong and prevailing innovation imperative is sweeping across the public sector and despite a growing literature on public sector innovation (PSI), the actors driving these processes tend to end up in the background of analysis. Based in an analytical framework of narrative theory and organization studies, and the efforts to introduce Social Impact Bonds (SIB) in Sweden as empirical case, the a

Adolescent gaming and parent–child emotional closeness : bivariate relationships in a longitudinal perspective

The aim of this study was to add knowledge of the longitudinal associations between gaming and emotional closeness between parents and their children. We hypothesized that parent–child emotional closeness was linked to less gaming activity over time and that more gaming activity was linked to less parent–child emotional closeness over time. We also tested the moderating effect of child gender on t

Intracellular C3 protects β-cells from IL-1β-driven cytotoxicity via interaction with Fyn-related kinase

One of the hallmarks of type 1 but also type 2 diabetes is pancreatic islet inflammation, associated with altered pancreatic islet function and structure, if unresolved. IL-1β is a proinflammatory cytokine which detrimentally affects β-cell function. In the course of diabetes, complement components, including the central complement protein C3, are deregulated. Previously, we reported high C3 expre

On the Digital Front-Line : Far-Right Memory Work in Baltic, Central, and East European Online Spaces

This anthology explores the memory work performed by Baltic and Central and East European far-right actors in the online space. Situated at the crossroads between memory studies, far-right studies, and media studies, the volume’s seven chapters show how a wide range of far-right actors, from small movements to major parties, have exploited digital communication technologies in order to establish t

GPR162 is a beta cell CART receptor

Cocaine and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) is expressed in pancreatic islet cells and neuronal elements. We have previously established insulinotropic actions of CART in human and rodent islets. The receptor for CART in the pancreatic beta cells is unidentified. We used RNA sequencing of Cartpt knockdown (KD) INS-1 832/13 cells and identified GPR162 as the most Cartpt-regulated receptor.
