Learning from Real Fire Incidents : a Methodology for Case Studies

Much information has been gathered through the years from fires in fire investigation reports or as statistics. The information might have been collected centrally by an agency, an insurance company or locally by the local fire service. The information can be used to learn from these events and to improve the fire safety in buildings. In this paper a methodology to find technical deficiencies in f

Narratology in Classroom: Using Narrative Metalepsis in Teaching Literature at Upper Secondary Level

An UPLC-MS/MS assay to measure glutathione as marker for oxidative stress in cultured cells

Oxidative stress plays a role in the onset and progression of a number of diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes and cancer, as well as ageing. Oxidative stress is caused by an increased production of reactive oxygen species and reduced antioxidant activity, resulting in the oxidation of glutathione. The ratio of reduced to oxidised glutathione is often used as a marker of the redox state

Can the STarT Back Tool predict health-related quality of life and work ability after an acute/subacute episode with back or neck pain? A psychometric validation study in primary care

OBJECTIVES: The predictive ability of the STarT Back Tool (SBT) has not yet been examined among acute/subacute back and/or neck pain in a primary care setting in respect to health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and work ability outcomes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the SBT's predictive validity for HRQoL and work ability outcomes at long-term follow-up in a population with acute/subacut

Narratives of integration: Liminality in migrant acculturation through social media

Migrant integration is a long drawn out process requiring synergies with various dimensions of life, rhyming with those of the host country. In this paper, we attempt to deconstruct the digital narratives of migrant to explore how they may lead to a meaningful assessment of their acculturation and consequent integration in their host societies’. Drawing on acculturation theory as a lens, we argue

Thrombocytopenia in bacteraemia and association with bacterial species

Thrombocytopenia is common in patients with invasive bacterial infections. Bacteria can activate platelets, but it is unclear if this affects platelet count. The aim of this study was to examine whether bacteraemia with Staphylococcus aureus, which readily activate human platelets, was more likely to be complicated by thrombocytopenia than bacteraemia with Escherichia coli or Streptococcus pneumon

The Psychic Life of Resistance : The Ethnic Subject in a High-Tech Region

The last 20 years have seen a flood of studies of resistance, ranging from collective to individual acts of resistance, from the study of material aspects to its more ideational ones. Yet students of resistance have neglected the psychological dimension of everyday individual acts of resistance to power. This article is a first step to remedy that oversight. Inspired by Butler’s reading of Foucaul

The Tyranny of Small Decisions. Unsustainable Cities and Local Day-to-Day Transport Planning

Though new goals for sustainable cities and transport systems have been developed, decisions and planning at a local level often fail to achieve these ambitions. The purpose of this article is to analyse the factors in local decision-making and planning practice that conduce to urban sprawl and increased car traffic. The article analyses how the conscious application of so-called "day-to-day decis
