Measurements of underlying-event properties using neutral and charged particles in pp collisions at root s=900 GeV and root s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC
We present first measurements of charged and neutral particle-flow correlations in pp collisions using the ATLAS calorimeters. Data were collected in 2009 and 2010 at centre-of-mass energies of 900 GeV and 7 TeV. Events were selected using a minimum-bias trigger which required a charged particle in scintillation counters on either side of the interaction point. Particle flows, sensitive to the und
Genetic Variants of Coagulation Factor XI Show Association with Ischemic Stroke Up to 70 Years of Age
Background and Purpose: Coagulation factor XI (FXI) has an important role in the propagation and stabilization of a thrombus upon vessel injury. High FXI levels have been implicated in thrombotic diseases including ischemic stroke. The aim of our study was to investigate whether FXI gene (F11) variants are associated with ischemic stroke. Methods: The discovery sample, the Sahlgrenska Academy Stud
Calpain activation is involved in early caspase-independent neurodegeneration in the hippocampus following status epilepticus
Evidence for increased calpain activity has been described in the hippocampus of rodent models of temporal lobe epilepsy. However, it is not known whether calpains are involved in the cell death that accompanies seizures. In this work, we characterized calpain activation by examining the proteolysis of calpain substrates and in parallel we followed cell death in the hippocampus of epileptic rats.

Use of a standardized diagnostic approach improves the prognostic information of histopathologic factors in pancreatic and periampullary adenocarcinoma.
Variability in reported histopathology parameters in operated periampullary adenocarcinomas may affect the prognostic weight of the parameters. Standardized axial sectioning produces a higher incidence of involved margins and also seems to produce a lower relative incidence of pancreatic compared with distal bile duct origin and a higher incidence of involved lymph nodes, compared with non-standar
Heavy-element fission barriers
We present calculations of fission properties for heavy elements. The calculations are based on the macroscopic-microscopic finite-range liquid-drop model with a 2002 parameter set. For each nucleus we have calculated the potential energy in three different shape parametrizations: (1) for 5 009 325 different shapes in a five-dimensional deformation space given by the three-quadratic-surface parame
Centrality and rapidity dependence of inclusive jet production in root(NN)-N-S=5.02 TeV proton-lead collisions with the ATLAS detector
Measurements of the centrality and rapidity dependence of inclusive jet production in root(NN)-N-S = 5.02 TeV proton-lead (p + Pb) collisions and the jet cross-section in root s = 2.76 TeV proton-proton collisions are presented. These quantities are measured in datasets corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 27.8 nb(-1) and 4.0 pb(-1), respectively, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the La
Hyperfine induced intensity redistribution in In II
We present a theoretical investigation of the hyperfine structure of the 5s5d D-3(2)-5s4f F-3(2,3)0 transitions in In II. Earlier work has failed in determining hyperfine constants for the upper levels of these transitions. We show that this is due to strong off-diagonal hyperfine interaction, which not only changes the position of the individual hyperfine lines but also introduces large intensity
Management of hydrogen sulfide in anaerobic digestion of enzyme pretreated marine macro-algae
Enzymatic pretreatment of algae by means of cellulose degrading enzyme was evaluated through lab-scale and pilot-scale experiments. The degradation efficiency of the enzyme depended on the initial physical quality of the algae. Lab-scale batch anaerobic digestion experiments showed comparatively low methane potential for the pretreated algae at both mesophilic and thermophilic temperatures. Howeve
Analyzing the functional dynamics of technological innovation systems: A scheme of analysis
Various researchers and policy analysts have made empirical studies of innovation systems in order to understand their current structure and trace their dynamics. However, policy makers often experience difficulties in extracting practical guidelines from studies of this kind. In this paper, we operationalize our previous work on a functional approach to analyzing innovation system dynamics into a
Disposable Electrodes for Capacitive Immunosensor
Disposable electrodes were fabricated by coating chromium (5 nm) and gold (200 nm) on glass strips (5.0 mm x 25.4 mm) and used in a label-free immunosensor. Human Serum albumin (HSA) and its antigen (anti-HSA) were used as a model system. Electropolymerization of o-phenylenediamine was used for the immobilization of anti-HSA by covalent binding. A linear relationship was obtained in the range from
Regulation of Hematopoietic Stem Cells
Blodstamceller har multipotentiell differentieringsförmåga dvs. de kan bilda alla mogna bloThis thesis is about the regulation of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) that represent rare cells residing in the bone marrow (BM) of adults. They are multipotent cells that have the capacity to differentiate to all mature cells of the blood system and have the capacity to self-renew, i.e. generate new HSCs. These cells have tremendous therapeutic potential to treat a variety of hematopoietic disor
Non-Invasive Estimates of Left Atrial Activation in a Patient with Dissociated Left Atrial Tachycardia following Ablation of Atrial Fibrillation
Introduction: Interatrial frequency gradient is used to guide catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF) but reliable tools for its non-invasive estimation are lacking. We present a patient with dissociated left and right atrial rhythms that allows identification of sum face ECG leads that closely reflect left atrial activity. Methods: 12-lead ECG was recorded simultaneously with electrograms f
Early behaviour and development in breast-fed premature infants are influenced by omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acid status.
BACKGROUND: The requirement of essential fatty acids (EFA) for the development of the brain is well documented. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the early neurological development at term and 44weeks gestational age in preterm infants in relation to EFA concentrations in breast milk and in infants' and mothers' plasma phospholipids. METHOD: Fifty-one premature infants and their mothers were consecutively

C-reactive protein, established risk factors and social inequalities in cardiovascular disease - the significance of absolute versus relative measures of disease
Background: The widespread use of relative scales in socioepidemiological studies has recently been criticized. The criticism is based mainly on the fact that the importance of different risk factors in explaining social inequalities in cardiovascular disease (CVD) varies, depending on which scale is used to measure social inequalities. The present study examines the importance of established risk
Hypoxia-Inducible Factors in Tumor Cell Differentiation and Tumor Vascularization
Mammalian cells, including tumor cells, adapt to hypoxia via stabilization of two transcription factors - Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1alpha and HIF-2alpha. Among other consequences, hypoxia is a main driving force behind angiogenesis. The differentiation stage of tumor cells is recognized as an important clinical factor in several malignancies including neuroblastoma. Tumors with an immature
