The Role of Psychological Factors and Vaccine Conspiracy Beliefs in Influenza Vaccine Hesitancy and Uptake among Jordanian Healthcare Workers during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Vaccination to prevent influenza virus infection and to lessen its severity is recommended among healthcare workers (HCWs). Health professionals have a higher risk of exposure to viruses and could transmit the influenza virus to vulnerable patients who are prone to severe disease and mortality. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the levels of influenza vaccine acceptance and uptake as we

Farm to furan derivatives : Fractionation of agricultural residues and transformation of sugars to chemical building blocks

The transition of industrial production from petrochemistry to a more sustainable economy requires the use of carbon neutral, renewable feedstock, which does not compete with food and feed supplies – by-products of farming and agro-food industry offer this possibility. With a limited range of low-value applications today coupled with the need for maximal utilisation of resources, the by-products o

South African University Staff and Students’ Perspectives, Preferences, and Drivers of Hesitancy Regarding COVID-19 Vaccines : A Multi-Methods Study

COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy poses a threat to the success of vaccination programmes currently being implemented. Concerns regarding vaccine effectiveness and vaccine-related adverse events are potential barriers to vaccination; however, it remains unclear whether tailored messaging and vaccination programmes can influence uptake. Understanding the preferences of key groups, including students, coul

The Role of Surgical Axillary Staging Prior to Immediate Breast Reconstruction in the Era of De-Escalation of Axillary Management in Early Breast Cancer

Postmastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT) following immediate breast reconstruction (IBR) is associated with postoperative complications. Although the incidence of node-positive breast cancer is declining, a separate sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is still performed before mastectomy when IBR is planned, in order to evaluate nodal status and the need for PMRT. This study assessed the impact of staged

Levels of Vitamin D and Expression of the Vitamin D Receptor in Relation to Breast Cancer Risk and Survival

Previous research suggests associations between low systemic levels of vitamin D and poor breast cancer prognosis and between expression of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) in breast cancers and survival. This study aimed to study associations between pre-diagnostic systemic levels of vitamin D and expression of VDR in subsequent breast tumors, and interactions between vitamin D and VDR on breast canc

Poly(arylene alkylene)s with pendent benzyl-tethered ammonium cations for anion exchange membranes

Polymeric anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) with alkali-stable quaternary ammonium (QA) cations are essential components for the development of alkaline membrane fuel cells and water electrolyzers. Ionic loss by β-elimination reactions typically accelerates at low water contents, i.e., high alkali concentrations, which makes QA cations attached to polymer backbones via benzylic sites interesting alt

Slavery and Bondage in Asia, 1550–1850 : Towards a Global History of Coerced Labour

The study of slavery and coerced labour is increasingly conducted from a global perspective, and yet a dual Eurocentric bias remains: slavery primarily brings to mind the images of Atlantic chattel slavery, and most studies continue to be based – either outright or implicitly – on a model of northern European wage labour. This book constitutes an attempt to re-centre that story to Asia. With studie

Enslaved in Dzungaria : what an eighteenth-century crocheting instructor can teach us about overland globalisation

This global microhistorical analysis of the Swede Brigitta Scherzenfeldt’s capture in Russia and her subsequent enslavement in the Dzungar khanate stresses actors and regions needed to nuance the history of globalisation. The early globalisation process is commonly exemplified with maritime contacts, involving free and often male West European actors. In contrast, this study combines multilingual

360-Degree Films for Cognitive Inclusion at Workplaces

Persons with stress-related disorders, mental disorders and neuropsychiatric disabilities are in particular vulnerable to cognitive challenges at the workplace. The barriers faced by persons with communicative, social and cognitive disabilities are most often invisible to persons in the environment. The objective of the study presented in this paper is to develop and test a tool that increases awa

Conversation costume

The centre of the research ‘Conversation Costume’ was an investigation of co-creational costume process. An important starting point for the research was verbal and non-verbal conversations. One aspect of the conversation was the practice of listening, for example, sensing the costume ‘things’, ourselves, each other, and the space as costume-body-space-improvisations. Another aspect of the convers

Plasma proteomic profiling in postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) reveals new disease pathways

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a cardiovascular autonomic disorder characterized by excessive heart rate increase on standing, leading to debilitating symptoms with limited therapeutic possibilities. Proteomics is a large-scale study of proteins that enables a systematic unbiased view on disease and health, allowing stratification of patients based on their protein background.

Effectiveness of the BNT162b2 mRNA Vaccine Compared with Hybrid Immunity in Populations Prioritized and Non-Prioritized for COVID-19 Vaccination in 2021–2022 : A Naturalistic Case-Control Study in Sweden

The term hybrid immunity is used to denote the immunological status of vaccinated individuals with a history of natural infection. Reports of new SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern motivate continuous rethought and renewal of COVID-19 vaccination programs. We used a naturalistic case-control study design to compare the effectiveness of the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine to hybrid immunity 180 days post-vaccina

The T-type calcium channel CaV3.2 regulates insulin secretion in the pancreatic β-cell

Voltage-gated Ca2+ (CaV) channel dysfunction leads to impaired glucose-stimulated insulin secretion in pancreatic β-cells and contributes to the development of type-2 diabetes (T2D). The role of the low-voltage gated T-type CaV channels in β-cells remains obscure. Here we have measured the global expression of T-type CaV3.2 channels in human islets and found that gene expression of CACNA1H, encodi

Play with a purpose: Intensive parenting, educational desires and shifting notions of childhood and learning in twenty-first century Singapore

This article examines how Singaporean parents negotiate complex expectations in relation to current reforms aimed at raising creative and problem-solving children. Based on ethnographic fieldwork, the article explores how ideas of brain-claiming, resilience, and natural exposure shape parenting practices around young children’s learning. Components of gait in people with and without mild cognitive impairment

Background: Several objective gait parameters are associated with cognitive impairment, but there is limitedknowledge of gait models in people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).Research question: How can 18 objective gait characteristics be used to define different components of gait inpeople with MCI (with suspected incipient neurocognitive disorder) and cognitively unimpaired people (CU),resp

Studiens vetenskapsteoretiska förankring finns i socialkonstruktionismen; teaMusic teachers in Swedish compulsory schools spend much of their time with work concerning assessment and grading. In this study, five music teachers have been interviewed with the purpose of finding out how they construct their assessment and grading practices by inquiring into by what circumstances their practices are affected. The study’s theoretical foundation lies within social constructionis
