Nuclear spin interactions and coherent control in rare-earth-ion-doped crystals for quantum computing

This thesis work concerns studies of two rare-earth-ions, praseodymium (Pr3+) and europium (Eu3+), doped into a yttrium orthosilicate (Y2SiO5) crystal for applications in quantum computing. The nuclear spin levels of these ions can have very long coherence times, up to several hours. Coherence can also be effectively transferred between the optical and hyperfine levels. These systems, therefore, h

This article suggest that costume-driven performances are a growing trend in international performing arts scene as well as in costume research. The article sheds light on international trends in the performing arts and research, offers an example of a costume-driven dance performance from the author’s practice and concludes with considerations about the field's visibility/potential in the Danish

Ethical dilemmas of listening through and with costume.

‘Responsibility begins from the acknowledgement that we are all part of the world. And that we cannot distance ourselves from it or assume a stance of innocence in our relationship with others’ (Bozalek & Zembylas 2017, 68).In this paper I will discuss the ethical dilemmas of listening through and with costume and the ambiguity of temporal and spatial collaborative entanglements. As a costume

Co-costuming as an opening for temporal socio-material entanglements : a dialogical process of co-wearing a connecting-costume

This paper derives from the twelve-hour costume-based ‘performative-walk’ Community Walk that locomoted through the central area of Copenhagen on June 29, 2020. The frame for Community Walk was a bright yellow costume that physically connected two wearers and the concept of ‘walking and talking’. ‘Walking’ was physically sensing the co-wearer through the costume and jointly navigating and negotiat

Community Walk : a co-costumed "walking and talking" performance

Community Walk (a co-costumed "performance") locomoted through the central area of Copenhagen on July 30, 2020. Community walk was a part of the festival Wa(l)king Copenhagen. During 12 hours I "walked and talked" co-costumed to 12 difference co-wearers _ one hour with each wearer. Wa(l)king Copenhagen was developed and organized by Metropolis (Copenhagen’s International Theatre) as a response to

Cabbage Dressing in Corona Times

Cabbage Dressing in Corona Times is a research project conducted by Charlotte and Sally that explores collaborative making, wearing, and undressing within the limitations of the global COVID-19 pandemic. The material of cabbage is chosen because of its impermanence — it easily decomposes, becoming symbolic of the fragility of our current context. The costumes have been created together but also se

Unraveling Traces of Tissues

Unraveling Traces of Tissues is a video that documents the impact of costume on performers through recorded interviews and video footage from the Traces of Tissues rehearsal process — emphasizing both collective and individual experiences. The documentation culminates with an excerpt from the final performance. Traces of Tissues is a site-specific costume requiem for those living in the liminal sp

“Brown Babies” in post-WWII Denmark : A Case Study of the Vulnerabilities of Adopted Children Born of War

Children born to occupying soldiers during or after conflicts are in many ways an extraordinarily vulnerable population. These so-called children born of war (CBOW) commonly inherit the stigma of transgression and foreignness from their respective parents and face discrimination in post-conflict societies. Their specific vulnerabilities, though, emerge from multiple overlapping factors: the needs

Liminal Children, Liminal Rights? : Media Representations of Scandinavian Children Born of War after World War II and after the Fall of the Islamic State

This chapter argues for the importance of developing historical reference frames for Scandinavian children born to foreign fighters in the so-called Islamic State (IS)—that is, seeing them as children born of war (CBOW) rather than as “IS children”—to strengthen the case for their repatriation from Kurdish detention camps. Politicians across the region today stress they want to repatriate the chil

AweAre : a movement quintet

Festival context: In response to the pandemic lockdown in Denmark in 2020, the Carlsberg Foundation developed the performance festival UP CLOSE (curated by art historian Natalia Gutman), which over four days (two weekends) presented twelve different performances to an audience. Invited to each create a fifteen-minute performance (performed three times on a specific date) were, among others, the vi

Petrochemical transition narratives: Selling fossil fuel solutions in a decarbonizing world

Being integral to the fossil-based energy order and as a key driver of multiple and intersecting ecological crises, the petrochemical industry faces increasing pressures to transform. This paper examines how major petrochemical companies navigate these pressures. Drawing from literatures on discursive power, narratives, and neo-Gramscian political economy, we introduce the concept of narrative rea

Associations Between Findings of Fusobacterium necrophorum or β-Hemolytic Streptococci and Complications in Pharyngotonsillitis : A Registry-Based Study in Southern Sweden

BackgroundMost pharyngotonsillitis guidelines focus on the identification of group A streptococci (GAS), guided by clinical scores determining whom to test with a rapid antigen detection test. Nevertheless, many patients testing negative with this test are evaluated for group C/G streptococci (GCS/GGS) and Fusobacterium necrophorum, yet their importance remains debated. Our primary aim was to eval

When a Synonymous Variant Is Nonsynonymous

Term synonymous variation is widely used, but frequently in a wrong or misleading meaning and context. Twenty three point eight % of possible nucleotide substitution types in the universal genetic code are for synonymous amino acid changes, but when these variants have a phenotype and functional effect, they are very seldom synonymous. Such variants may manifest changes at DNA, RNA and/or protein

Transcriptional Responses as Biomarkers of General Toxicity : A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis on Metal-Exposed Bivalves

Through a systematic review and a series of meta-analyses, we evaluated the general responsiveness of putative transcriptional biomarkers of general toxicity and chemical stress. We targeted metal exposures performed on bivalves under controlled laboratory conditions, and selected six transcripts associated with general toxicity for evaluation: catalase (cat), glutathione-S-transferase (gst), heat

Bomullssvälten

Under de senaste åren har ord som krig, kris och råvarubrist varit hett nyhetsstoff. Pandemin och Rysslands krig i Ukraina har visat hur sammanlänkade vi är i en global ekonomi. The Role of Psychological Factors and Vaccine Conspiracy Beliefs in Influenza Vaccine Hesitancy and Uptake among Jordanian Healthcare Workers during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Vaccination to prevent influenza virus infection and to lessen its severity is recommended among healthcare workers (HCWs). Health professionals have a higher risk of exposure to viruses and could transmit the influenza virus to vulnerable patients who are prone to severe disease and mortality. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the levels of influenza vaccine acceptance and uptake as we

Farm to furan derivatives : Fractionation of agricultural residues and transformation of sugars to chemical building blocks

The transition of industrial production from petrochemistry to a more sustainable economy requires the use of carbon neutral, renewable feedstock, which does not compete with food and feed supplies – by-products of farming and agro-food industry offer this possibility. With a limited range of low-value applications today coupled with the need for maximal utilisation of resources, the by-products o
