Ten years with MAX IV: Sanna Alwmark searches for traces of Earth’s most violent collisions

What actually happens to bedrock when Earth is struck by another celestial body travelling at tens of kilometres per second? Geologist Sanna Alwmark searches for answers in the microscopic traces left in minerals by extreme pressures. Using MAX IV, she has been able to study and visualise these changes in an entirely new way – while also discovering new possibilities for her research. Sanna Alwmar

Ten years with MAX IV: How the facility has shaped Edith Hammer’s research career

For biologist and senior lecturer Edith Hammer, MAX IV has been part of her research for many years. But the facility’s significance extends beyond research results. Proximity to MAX IV has influenced Edith’s own career, created opportunities for early-career researchers and contributed to an international research environment in Lund. Edith Hammer is a soil ecologist at the Department of Biology

Ten years with MAX IV: Jesper Wallentin has followed its development from the very beginning to today’s research

When Jesper Wallentin returned to Lund eleven years ago, MAX IV was still under construction and the X-ray methods he wanted to use were not available in Lund. Since then, he has followed its development at close quarters – from the first, fairly rudimentary experiments to today’s considerably more mature research environment. At the same time, MAX IV has shaped his own path as a researcher. “I pr

Dean’s Corner with Per Persson: MAX IV celebrates 10 years

It has been just over ten years since MAX IV was inaugurated on the longest day of the year in 2016. It is hard to believe, as it feels like only yesterday. Much has happened over the past decade, and the facility has developed into a fantastic resource for research at Lund University, as well as for researchers from across Sweden and around the world who come here to conduct experiments. It has b

How thawing permafrost changes greenhouse gas emissions from peatlands

In his doctoral thesis, Patryk Łakomiec examined how northern peatlands exchange carbon dioxide and methane with the atmosphere. His findings show that thawing permafrost changes how these ecosystems process carbon and could help improve estimates of future greenhouse gas emissions. What did your research focus on? “I examined the exchange of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide and methane) between n
