Crystal structure of a 1.6-hexanediol bound tetrameric form of Escherichia coli lac-repressor refined to 2.1 A resolution.

We report the structure of a novel tetrameric form of the lactose repressor (LacI) protein from Escherichia coli refined to 2.1 A resolution. The tetramer is bound to 1.6-hexanediol present in the crystallization solution and the final R(free) for the structure is 0.201. The structure confirms previously reported structures on the monomer level. However, the tetramer is much more densely packed. T

Very old people's experience of occupational performance outside the home: possibilities and limitations

To support occupations outside the home for older people with functional limitations it is important to understand how the person, environment, and occupations influence performance. Therefore the purpose of this study was to describe how very old people experience occupational performance outside the home. Twenty-one single-living, very old persons, above 80 years, were strategically selected and

High prevalence of HIV-1, HIV-2 and other sexually transmitted infections among women attending two sexual health clinics in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, West Africa.

The objective was to examine the prevalence of HIV-1, HIV-2 and 10 other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and to explore the relationship between HIV and those STIs in women attending two sexual health clinics in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau. In all, 711 women with urogenital problems were included. Clinical examination was performed and HIV-1, HIV-2, human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV)-1, HTLV

Evaluation of a Fiber-Optic Based Pulsed Laser System for Fluorescence Spectroscopy

A fiber optic based continous wave laser setup has been developed to record the 5-aminolevulinic (5-ALA) induced Protoporfyrin IX (PpIX) fluorescence signals from cerebral gliomas. To reduce the energy delivered to the tissue as well as suppression of the ambient lamp artifact from the recorded spectra, a pulsed laser setup has been developed and evaluated. This setup has been calibrated and first

Development and quality analysis of the Salutogenic Health Indicator Scale (SHIS).

BACKGROUND: Current health measurement instruments tend to measure aspects of ill-health rather than health in general. There is a need for a salutogenic perspective when describing health and developing a health measurement instrument. The aim of this article is to present the development process and quality assessment of a salutogenic health indicator scale. METHODS: A description of health, ema

Protein kinase C in porcine retinal arteries and neuroretina following retinal ischemia-reperfusion.

PURPOSE: Identification of the intracellular signal-transduction pathways activated in retinal ischemia may be important in revealing novel pharmacological targets. To date, most studies have focused on identifying neuroprotective agents. The retinal blood vessels are key organs in circulatory failure, and this study was therefore designed to examine the retinal vasculature separately from the neu

Adjustable valves in normal-pressure hydrocephalus: a retrospective study of 218 patients.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess the value of adjusting shunt valve opening pressure, complications, and outcomes with the use of an adjustable shunt valve in the treatment of patients with normal-pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). METHODS: In a single-center retrospective study, 231 adjustable valves (range, 30-200 mm H2O) were the first shunt implantations in 147 patients with idiopathic NPH (INPH) and

Studies of Phonons and Phase Transitions by Time-Resolved X-ray Diffraction

When light is used to study structures, the wavelength limits the size of the details that can be resolved. Visible light can be used to investigate structures as small as a micrometre in size. To study smaller structures a shorter wavelength is required. The wavelength of hard X-ray radiation is much shorter than that of visible light, and is comparable to the distance between atoms in solids and
