Molecular basis of coagulation factor V deficiency caused by the R1698W inter-domain mutation
Coagulation factor V (FV) deficiency is characterised by variable bleeding phenotypes and heterogeneous mutations. To add new insights into the FV genotype-phenotype relationship, we characterised the R1698W change in the A3 domain, at the poorly investigated interface with the A2 domain. The FV R1698W mutation was responsible for a markedly reduced expression level (10% of FV-WT) and specific act
Lattice Structures of Precoders Maximizing the Minimum Distance in Linear Channels
This paper investigates linear precoding over nonsingular linear channels with additive white Gaussian noise, with lattice-type inputs. The aim is to maximize the minimum distance of the received lattice points, where the precoder is subject to an energy constraint. It is shown that the optimal precoder only produces a finite number of different lattices, namely perfect lattices, at the receiver.

Composition and function of cytochrome c biogenesis System II.
Organisms employ one of several different enzyme systems to mature cytochromes c. The biosynthetic process involves the periplasmic reduction of cysteine residues in the heme c attachment motif of the apocytochrome, transmembrane transport of heme b and stereospecific covalent heme attachment via thioether bonds. The biogenesis System II (or Ccs system) is employed by β-, δ- and ε-proteobacteria,
One-dimensional pion, kaon, and proton femtoscopy in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S=2.76 TeV
The size of the particle emission region in high-energy collisions can be deduced using the femtoscopic correlations of particle pairs at low relative momentum. Such correlations arise due to quantum statistics and Coulomb and strong final state interactions. In this paper, results are presented from femtoscopic analyses of pi(+/-) pi(+/-), K-+/- K-+/-, K-S(0) K-S(0), pp, and (pp) over bar correla
High incidence of septic shock caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 3-a retrospective epidemiological study
Background: More than 90 immunologically distinct serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae exist, and it is not fully elucidated whether the serotype is a risk factor for severity of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD). Our hypothesis is that serotypes differ in their capacity to cause septic shock. Methods: We performed a retrospective study in Southern Sweden based upon 513 patients with IPD in the

Large-eddy simulation on the effect of injection pressure and density on fuel jet mixing in gas engines
Direct injection (DI) natural gas engines are modern engine concepts providing clean combustion and high fuel efficiency. Even at high injection pressures, such engines operate at heterogeneous/stratified fuel/air mixture conditions due to the relatively short mixing time of the fuel jet. The sub-optimal fuel-air mixture results in emissions of unburnt hydrocarbon (UHC). In particular, one of the
Investigating practice variation in a changing primary care. A multilevel perspective on The Skaraborg Primary Care Database
De är sällan vetenskapligt underbyggda uBackground and Aims: Differences in the clinical care of patients have been explained through the concept of practice variation, that is, the occurrence of established local medical procedures that varies between geographic areas. The primary measures introduced to eliminate undesirable differences in medical care are the introduction of medical guidelines and economical incentives that rewards th
Search for a heavy Standard Model Higgs boson in the channel H -> ZZ -> l(+)l(-) q(q)over-bar using the ATLAS detector
A search for a heavy Standard Model Higgs boson decaying via H -> ZZ -> l(+)l(-)q (q) over bar, where l = e, mu, is presented. The search is performed using a data set of pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.04 fb(-1) collected in 2011 by the ATLAS detector at the CERN LHC collider. No significant excess of events above the estimated background is found.
MCM2 expression levels predict diagnosis and prognosis in gastric cardiac cancer
Background: Gastric Cardiac Cancer (GCC) has high incidence and poor prognosis requiring early screening of high-risk populations. Minichromosome maintenance (MCM) proteins are used as diagnostic-biomarkers in many cancers but not validated for GCC. We evaluate MCM protein 2 (MCM2), comparing it with the validated markers Ki67 and PCNA. Methods: GCC and corresponding cardiac precancerous samples w
Role of complement and complement regulators in the removal of apoptotic cells
Apoptosis, followed by rapid phagocytic clearance, is the primary mechanism by which organisms dispose of unwanted cells. The intracellular and extracellular composition of an apoptotic cell changes to decrease immunogenicity and enhance its uptake. By changing their extracellular composition, apoptotic cells acquire the capacity to bind complement initiation molecules such as C1q and MBL. Binding

Secondhand Smoke Exposure Causes Bronchial Hyperreactivity via Transcriptionally Upregulated Endothelin and 5-hydroxytryptamine 2A Receptors.
Cigarette smoke exposure is strongly associated with airway hyperreactivity (AHR) which is the main characteristic seen in asthma. The intracellular MAPK signaling pathways are suggested to be associated with the airway damage to the AHR. In the present study, we hypothesize that secondhand cigarette smoke (SHS) exposure upregulates the bronchial contractile receptors via activation of the Raf/ERK

Hyperfine structure and hyperfine coherent properties of praseodymium in single-crystalline La-2(WO4)(3) by hole-burning and photon-echo techniques
We studied the hyperfine structure and hyperfine coherent properties of the H-3(4)(0)-> D-1(2)(0) transition of Pr3+ ions in a tungstate single crystal La-2(WO4)(3) by hole-burning and photon-echo techniques. This work is motivated by the search of an efficient three level Lambda system in this new compound with which we could build up a quantum memory. By nonconventional hole-burning experiments,
How Wild is Iceland? Wilderness Quality with Respect to Nature-based Tourism
The Icelandic highlands are one of the few places left in Europe where tourists can experience pristine wilderness. During the past decades the highlands have, however, witnessed a rapid expansion in natural resource exploitation. This study attempts to evaluate the pristine condition of Icelandic wilderness by testing different methods of identifying and analysing wilderness with respect to natur
