Using technology to promote learning across an enlerged European Union:experience emerging from teh AlPINE project: A European funded Project 2001-2004
This paper summarises the aims and goals of the ALPINE project, a project involving partners in 20 European countries. It examines how the project used technology and further to enhance project learning and the problems and opportunities created by this approach. The paper refers to the work of one of its working groups, the ICT and Community outreach group. The paper shows how providers of adult
Devils, Serpents, Zebras: Metaphors of Illness in Contemporary Swedish Literature on Eating Disorders
The present paper explores the metaphors of illness in Swedish narratives on eating disorders, published between 1987 and 2005. The authors use the metaphors of powerful beings such as serpents or devils to name their illness, and these metaphors can be analysed as being part of the master metaphors of battle, territory and intruders. This paper discusses the metaphors used to envision the flesh a

Primary Care as an Arena For Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Vardiovascular Disease Prevention
Målsättningen för denna studie var att undersöka möjligheten för läkare och sjuksköterskoCardiovascular disease prevention has been a challenge for research for decades. The studies of this thesis were designed to investigate the role of health professionals in everyday clinical work based upon the concept of comprehensive primary care consultation. Routine check-up of blood pressure was the basis for the inclusion in an opportunistic screening for hyperchol-esterolaemia. Additionally

Waste heat recovery in a cruise vessel in the Baltic Sea by using an organic Rankine cycle: a case study
Maritime transportation is a significant contributor to SOx, NOx and particle matter emissions, even though it has a quite low CO2 impact. New regulations are being enforced in special areas that limit the amount of emissions from the ships. This fact, together with the high fuel prices, is driving the marine industry towards the improvement of the energy efficiency of current ship engines and the
Evolutionary Processes and Hybridization within the Peat Mosses, Sphagnum
The aim of this thesis was to reveal details of the interspecific hybridization among bryophytes as exemplified by Sphagnum capillifolium and S. quinquefarium. I used a combination of morphometric and molecular methods, and cultivation experiments to (1) identify hybrid gametophytes, (2) reveal the contribution of each of the parents to the genomes of hybrids, (3) study the fertility of primary hy
Human Endogenous Retroviruses: Studies on Transcriptional Activity and Genetic Variability.
Förutom dessaEndogenous retroviruses (ERVs) are believed to be remains of germ-line infections that have become fixed in the population. They are involved in pathophysiological conditions, in mechanisms leading to infection protection, and directly in the physiology of the organism by participating in the regulation of cellular gene expression. It has been estimated that human ERVs (HERVs) make up about 0.6% o

A methodology for arithmetic reduction of the static power consumption verified on filter architectures
Abstract in UndeterminedIn today's technology generations, e.g. 90 and 65 nm, the static power consumption becomes a major contributor to the total power consumption. This paper focuses on the arithmetic level and shows a methodology for a substantial reduction of the static power consumption. Simulations are done in a typical 130 nm technology. Based on the simulation results, the static power in

ForThe thesis provides a discussion of the ecclesiology of the French Roman-Catholic theologian Henri de Lubac SJ (1896-1991) by showing how this is determined by his method of fundamental theology. I establish the term ?fundamental ecclesiology? for this inter-dependance of form and content, subject and object in theology; this is why his ecclesiology is sacramental in structure. I primarily use tex

The Effect of Feedback Quantization on the Throughput of a Multiuser Diversity Scheme
The impact of the quantization of SNR measurements on the throughput of a multiuser diversity scheme for constant-rate transmission is investigated under a block-Rayleigh fading assumption. In the downlink, each user measures its SNR, quantizes it, and feeds it back to the transmitter, which transmits a packet to the user with the highest quantized SNR. In the case of several users having the same
