Nonfouling Tunable beta CD Dextran Polymer Films for Protein Applications

Polymeric beta-cyclodextrin (beta CD) films tunable with respect to thickness and beta CD content were prepared in order to develop a suitable platform, allowing for inclusion of nonpolar guest molecules in the beta CD cavity, while suppressing nonspecific protein adsorption. The beta CD films were synthesized from linear beta CD dextran polymers, and grafted onto silicon oxide surfaces by "click"

Selection on male sex pheromone composition contributes to butterfly reproductive isolation.

Selection can facilitate diversification by inducing character displacement in mate choice traits that reduce the probability of maladaptive mating between lineages. Although reproductive character displacement (RCD) has been demonstrated in two-taxa case studies, the frequency of this process in nature is still debated. Moreover, studies have focused primarily on visual and acoustic traits, despi

Ten years of elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide alters soil nitrogen transformations in a sheep-grazed pasture

The increasing concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO(2)) is expected to lead to enhanced competition between plants and microorganisms for the available nitrogen (N) in soil. Here, we present novel results from a 15N tracing study conducted with a sheep-grazed pasture soil that had been under 10 years of CO(2) enrichment. Our study aimed to investigate changes in process-specific gross N

Measured adaptive matching performance of a MIMO terminal with user effects

Absorption and impedance mismatch due to the proximity of a user as well as certain propagation channel characteristics can severely degrade the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) performance of multi-antenna terminals in real usage scenarios. In this context, we investigated the potential of adaptive impedance matching (AIM) to mitigate performance degradation from these effects based on chann

Experimental results from a preclinical X-ray phase-contrast CT scanner

To explore the future clinical potential of improved soft-tissue visibility with grating-based X-ray phase contrast (PC), we have developed a first preclinical computed tomography (CT) scanner featuring a rotating gantry. The main challenge in the transition from previous bench-top systems to a preclinical scanner are phase artifacts that are caused by minimal changes in the grating alignment duri

Interfacial Properties of High-Density Lipoprotein-like Lipid Droplets with Different Lipid and Apolipoprotein A-I Compositions

The surface properties of high-density lipoproteins (HDLs) are important because different enzymes bind and carry out their functions at the surface of HDL particles during metabolic processes. However, the surface properties of HDL and other lipoproteins are poorly known because they cannot be directly measured for nanoscale particles with contemporary experimental methods. In this work, we carri

The evolutionary stability of cross-sex, cross-trait genetic covariances

Although knowledge of the selective agents behind the evolution of sexual dimorphism has advanced considerably in recent years, we still lack a clear understanding of the evolutionary durability of cross-sex genetic covariances that often constrain its evolution. We tested the relative stability of cross-sex genetic covariances for a suite of homologous contact pheromones of the fruit fly Drosophi

Unexpectedly low UV-sensitivity in a bird, the budgerigar.

Photoreceptor adaptation ensures appropriate visual responses during changing light conditions and contributes to colour constancy. We used behavioural tests to compare UV-sensitivity of budgerigars after adaptation to UV-rich and UV-poor backgrounds. In the latter case, we found lower UV-sensitivity than expected, which could be the result of photon-shot noise corrupting cone signal robustness or

Evaluation of selective composite cryogel for bromate removal from drinking water.

Bromate, which is a potential carcinogen, should be removed from drinking water to levels of less than 10 mug/L. A chitosan-based molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) and a sol-gel ion-exchange double hydrous oxide (Fe(2)O(3).Al(2)O(3).xH(2)O) adsorbent (inorganic adsorbent) were prepared for this purpose. The sorption behavior of each adsorbent including sorption kinetics, isotherms, effect of pH

Site-directed mutagenesis of an alkaline phytase: Influencing specificity, activity and stability in acidic milieu

Site-directed mutagenesis of a thermostable alkaline phytase from Bacillus sp. MD2 was performed with an aim to increase its specific activity and activity and stability in an acidic environment. The mutation sites are distributed on the catalytic surface of the enzyme (P257R, E180N, E229V and S283R) and in the active site (K77R, K179R and E227S). Selection of the residues was based on the idea th

Quantitative Proteomics Profiling of Primary Lung Adenocarcinoma Tumors Reveals Functional Perturbations in Tumor Metabolism

In this study, we have analyzed human primary lung adenocarcinoma tumors using global mass spectrometry to elucidate the biological mechanisms behind relapse post surgery. In total, we identified over 3000 proteins with high confidence. Supervised multivariate analysis was used to select 132 proteins separating the prognostic groups. Based on in-depth bioinformatics analysis, we hypothesized that

MACVIA-ARIA Sentinel NetworK for allergic rhinitis (MASK-rhinitis): The new generation guideline implementation.

Several unmet needs have been identified in allergic rhinitis: identification of the time of onset of the pollen season, optimal control of rhinitis and comorbidities, patient stratification, multidisciplinary team for integrated care pathways, innovation in clinical trials and above all patient empowerment. MASK-rhinitis (MACVIA-ARIA Sentinel NetworK for allergic rhinitis) is a simple system cent

Structured Diagnostic and Treatment Approach Versus the Usual Primary Care Approach in Patients With Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: A Cluster-randomized Multicenter Study.

GOALS:: To compare the clinical outcomes of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) patients treated with an implemented new structured pathway (NSP) or according to existing local clinical practices [old clinical pathway (OCP)]. BACKGROUND:: GERD is a major challenge at the primary care level. STUDY:: Primary care centers (n=24) were cluster randomized to handle patients suffering from symptoms su

CD146 expression on primary nonhematopoietic bone marrow stem cells is correlated with in situ localization

Nonhematopoietic bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) are of central importance for bone marrow stroma and the hematopoietic environment. However, the exact phenotype and anatomical distribution of specified MSC populations in the marrow are unknown. We characterized the phenotype of primary human BM-MSCs and found that all assayable colony-forming units-fibroblast (CFU-Fs) were highly and

3D-GIS as a Platform for Visual Analysis : Investigating a Pompeian House

The aim of the present work is to introduce an innovative framework for employing 3D-GIS as an exploratory platform to perform visual analysis. Such a methodology is aimed at detecting patterns of visibility to simulate the past human perception of specific categories of artifacts placed inside a virtually reconstructed three-dimensional space. As a case study, the house of Caecilius Iucundus in P

Tip-Enhanced Ultrasensitive Stokes and Anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy in High Vacuum

We report ultrasensitive Stokes and anti-Stokes Raman spectra of 1,2-benzenedithiol monolayer on Ag film with home-made high-vacuum tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (HV-TERS) system. Raman peaks that were orginally very weak were observed experimentally and assigned theoretically. The local temperature was obtained based on the observed Stokes and anti-Stokes HV-TERS spectra.

Immunophenotypical characterization of human neutrophil differentiation

The current study reports a flow cytometry-based protocol for the prospective purification of human BM populations representing six successive stages of terminal neutrophil differentiation, including early promyelocytes and late promyelocytes, myelocytes, metamyelocytes, band cells, and PMN neutrophilic granulocytes. Validation experiments revealed a high purity of each bone marrow population and

Homozygosity for a null allele of SMIM1 defines the Vel-negative blood group phenotype.

The Vel antigen is present on red blood cells (RBCs) from all humans except rare Vel-negative individuals who can form antibodies to Vel in response to transfusion or pregnancy. These antibodies may cause severe hemolytic reactions in blood recipients. We combined SNP profiling and transcriptional network modeling to link the Vel-negative phenotype to SMIM1, located in a 97-kb haplotype block on c
