UndersökningarnImportant goals in Swedish higher education policy, from the late 1960s all through the 1990s, have been to increase the accessibility to higher education and to increase the supply of newly educated labour in all parts of the country. These goals are based on the assumption that geographical distance matters. Geographical distance to universities is thought to act as a barrier to university entra

Recommendations for the standardization and interpretation of the electrocardiogram: part II: Electrocardiography diagnostic statement list: a scientific statement from the American Heart Association Electrocardiography and Arrhythmias Committee, Council on Clinical Cardiology; the American College of Cardiology Foundation; and the Heart Rhythm Society: endorsed by the International Society for Computerized Electrocardiology

This statement provides a concise list of diagnostic terms for ECG interpretation that can be shared by students, teachers, and readers of electrocardiography. This effort was motivated by the existence of multiple automated diagnostic code sets containing imprecise and overlapping terms. An intended outcome of this statement list is greater uniformity of ECG diagnosis and a resultant improvement

Coil-globule transition of DNA molecules induced by cationic surfactants: A dynamic light scattering study

The compaction and aggregation of DNA induced by cationic surfactants was studied by dynamic light scattering (DLS). Furthermore, the effect on surfactant-compacted DNA of the addition of nonionic amphiphiles and salt was studied. When using sufficiently low amounts of DNA and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), compacted DNA molecules could be monitored by the appearance of a band characterize

Dryer Section Control in Paper Machines During Web Breaks

Web breaks in the dryer section of a paper machine cause loss of production and quality problems. After a web break, the steam pressure in the cylinders must be reduced to avoid overheating. The goal of this project is to determine optimal steam pressure trajectories during web breaks, so that the production is restarted with the same drying properties of the cylinder as before the break. A detail

New single clock CMOS latches and flipflops with improved speed and power savings

New dynamic, semistatic, and fully static single-clock CMOS latches and flipflops are proposed. By removing the speed and power bottlenecks of the original true-single-phase clocking (TSPC) and the existing differential latches and flipflops, both delays and power consumptions are considerably reduced. For the nondifferential dynamic, the differential dynamic, the semistatic, and the fully static

Fragmentation of the lamellae and fractionation of polymer coils upon mixing poly(dimethylacrylamide) with the lamellar phase of aerosol OT in water

The lamellar mesophase formed by surfactant 1,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl) sodium sulfosuccinate (AOT) in deuterated water is mixed with poly(dimethylacrylamide) (PDMAA) polymers of low molecular weight ((M) over bar (n) = (2-20) x 10(3)). The mixtures separate into microphases (lamellar plus isotropic polymer solution). Their microstructures are studied by microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS),

Do partial and regular migrants differ in their responses to weather?

Partial migration is often considered a transitory stage between migration and residency, and whether partial migrants take weather conditions into account during migration is largely unknown. To assess whether partial migrants differ from regular migrants in their responses to weather, we compared the migratory intensity of a partial migrant, the Blue Tit (Cyanistes caeruleus), with more regular

Biological variation of retinoids in man.

This investigation was undertaken to assess biological variation, especially the within-subject variations of all- trans retinoic acid, 13- cis retinoic acid and retinol in human serum. Diurnal variation and variation over a week, a month and a year were studied in 11 males (aged 21 - 54 years) and 17 females (aged 22 - 63 years), all subjectively healthy. We found no diurnal variation with the ex

Objective:To study the time response of fission neutrons induced apoptosis in murine thymocytes with 60 Co γ-rays as the reference radiation and to investigate preliminarily its molecular mechanism. Methods: Apoptosis induction was detected by means of DNA gel electrophoresis, morphologic assay, flow cytometric (FCM) analysis and diphenylamine(DPA) method respectively. p53 and bcl-2 gene expressio

Effects of gradual bone lengthening on the rabbit tibial nerve

Little is known about the effect of gradual bone lengthening on peripheral nerves. In the present study, an external fixation device was applied to the rabbit tibia, which was then divided. After seven days, the tibia was subjected to 0.7 mm/day callus distraction for periods of up to one month. The tibial nerve was fixed in glutaraldehyde and plastic sections were cut in longitudinal and transver

Increased tolerance and conversion of inhibitors in lignocellulosic hydrolysates by Saccharomyces cerevisiae

During hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass, monomeric sugars and a broad range of inhibitory compounds are formed and released. These inhibitors, which can be organized around three main groups, furans, weak acids and phenolics, reduce ethanol yield and productivity by affecting the microorganism performance during the fermentation step. Among the microorganisms that have been evaluated for lign

A genomic map of a 6-Mb region at 13q21-q22 implicated in cancer development: identification and characterization of candidate genes

Chromosomal region 13q21-q22 harbors a putative breast cancer susceptibility gene and has been implicated as a common site for somatic deletions in a variety of malignant tumors. We have built a complete physical clone contig for a region between D13S1308 and AFM220YE9 based on 18 yeast artificial chromosome and 81 bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) clones linked together by 22 genetic markers

Mn-induced NO dissociation on Pd(100)

The changes in the NO adsorption properties of Pd(1 0 0) due to the addition of Mn have been investigated using high resolution core level photoelectron spectroscopy. The Pd(1 0 0) surface was modified by forming a c(2 x 2)-PdMn surface alloy at two different Mn coverages, giving surfaces partly and fully alloyed, respectively, as shown by scanning tunneling microscopy. NO adsorption on the alloy
