Gender differences in asthma prevalence may depend on how asthma is defined
BACKGROUND: Asthma may be defined either as wheeze within the previous 12 months (current wheeze) doctor-diagnosed asthma (DDA), or current wheeze plus confirmed airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR). AIMS: We wanted to estimate asthma prevalence in randomly selected adolescents based on different criteria for asthma diagnosis, study gender differences in reported asthma-like symptoms vs DDA, and relat

Aggregation effects on anhydrobiotic survival in the tardigrade Richtersius coronifer
For anhydrobiotic metazoans the rate of desiccation is an important factor influencing the probability of survival in a dry anhydrobiotic state. Formation of animal aggregations, in which the exposed body surface area of individual animals is reduced, represents one way to reduce the rate of evaporation. Such aggregations have earlier been documented in e.g., nematodes. We experimentally evaluate

Substrate and product dependence of force and shortening in fast and slow smooth muscle
To explore the molecular mechanisms responsible for the variation in smooth muscle contractile kinetics, the influence of MgATP, MgADP, and inorganic phosphate (P(i)) on force and shortening velocity in thiophosphorylated "fast" (taenia coli: maximal shortening velocity Vmax = 0.11 ML/s) and "slow" (aorta: Vmax = 0.015 ML/s) smooth muscle from the guinea pig were compared. P(i) inhibited active fo

Enhanced surface sensitivity in AES relative to XPS observed in free argon clusters
The surface-to-bulk intensity ratio in Auger electron spectra has been studied in comparison with core-level photoelectron spectra using free argon clusters of sizes ranging over two orders of magnitude. Enhanced surface sensitivity is observed in L2,3M2,3M2.3 Auger electron spectra compared to 2p photoelectron spectra where electrons of similar kinetic energies were recorded. This is discussed in
Follow-up after colorectal cancer surgery
Although most institutions offer some kind of follow-up to patients operated on for colorectal cancer, its value with respect to prolonged survival has been challenged. However, improved results of liver surgery and chemotherapy make it reasonable to assume that a follow-up programme leading to detection of more asymptomatic recurrences would result in improved survival. Liver metastases and extra
The kinetics of the reaction of hydrogen chloride with fresh and spent Ca-based desulfurization sorbents
The absorption of hydrogen chloride by spent desulfurization sorbents containing calcium carbonate, calcium oxide and calcium hydroxide was investigated. The experiments were carried out in a fixed-bed reactor in two temperature ranges: 423-523 K for slaked lime and 673-873 K for limestone and quicklime. The spent Ca-based sorbents can still react with hydrogen chloride, and after calcining and sl

The N=47 Shell-model Nucleus 90Tc
Lifetimes of high spin states in the nucleus Tc-90 have been measured via the fusion evaporation reactions Ni-58(Ar-36, 3pn)Tc-90 at 140 MeV and Ni-58(Cl-35, 2pn)Tc-90 at 120 MeV beam energy. The OSIRIS spectrometer as well as a new neutron-gamma-coincidence setup were used to measure lifetimes in the 10(-12) - 10(-9) s range by the recoil distance Doppler-shift method. By means of gamma-multiplic
Profibrotic effects of endothelin-1 via the ETA receptor in cultured human cardiac fibroblasts
Background/Aims: Endothelin-1 (ET-1) has been implicated in pathologic remodelling and tissue repair processes in the heart. We investigated the effects of ET-1 on growth and collagen synthesis responses in cardiac fibroblasts isolated from human hearts. We also studied the receptor subtype(s) mediating such responses and the factors regulating their expression. Methods: Fibroblasts were isolated
On the Causes of Famine - Drought, Desertification and Market Failure in the Sudan
Many natural scientists foster the idea of a degrading environment, caused by over-exploitation of the resources, being the cause of famine and poverty in Africa. In accordance with this, policies aimed at restoring the environment are formulated. This article analyses the main causes of famine, i.e. drought, desertification and the food market, with examples from the 1984-85 famine in the Sudan.
