Gender and willingness to lead: Does the gender composition of teams matter?

We explore how team gender composition affects willingness to lead by randomly assigning participants in an experiment to male- or female-majority teams. Irrespective of team gender composition, men are substantially more willing than women to lead their team. The pooled sample, and women separately, are more willing to lead female- than male-majority teams. An analysis of mechanisms reveals that

Assessing the accuracy of a deep learning method to risk stratify indeterminate pulmonary nodules

Rationale: The management of indeterminate pulmonary nodules (IPNs) remains challenging, resulting in invasive procedures and delays in diagnosis and treatment. Strategies to decrease the rate of unnecessary invasive procedures and optimize surveillance regimens are needed. Objectives: To develop and validate a deep learning method to improve the management of IPNs. Methods:ALung Cancer Prediction

Television Adaptations of Jane Austen’s Emma, 1972–2009

The aim of this paper was to analyse how three different television adaptations of Jane Austen’s Emma(1815) avail themselves of the medium of television to narrate the story. The productions analysed are John Glenister’s BBC series from 1972, dramatised by Denis Constanduros; Diarmuid Lawrence’s ITV film from 1996, dramatised by Andrew Davies; and Jim O’Hanlon’s BBC series from 2009, dramatised by

Designing high efficient solar powered lighting systems

Some major challenges in the development of L2L products is the lack of efficient converter electronics, modelling tools for dimensioning and furthermore, characterization facilities to support the successful development of the products. We report the development of 2 Three-Port-Converters respectively for 1-10Wp and 10-50 Wp with a peak efficiency of 97% at 1.8 W of PV power for the 10 Wp version

Intraabdominal and retroperitoneal soft-tissue sarcomas - Surgical treatment and outcomes

BACKGROUND: Intraabdominal and retroperitoneal sarcomas (IaRS) are malignant connective tissue tumors. Surgical resection is often the only curative treatment. The primary objective was to report the mid-term outcomes following contemporary treatment protocols and identify prognostic factors.METHODS: A retrospective review of consecutive patients (n = 107) with IaRS treated at single center from 2

De empiriska fallen som studeras i avhandlingen är två mångThe thesis approaches the research question of how journalistic practices facilitate the construction of celebrity status. Theoretically, celebrity is conceptualised as a particularly fluid form of social status based on mediatized attention and engagement. Journalism is studied as an invitation to shareexperiences, organised through media logics and narrative structures. The empirical cases studi

The Technopolitics of Compassion : A Postphenomenological Analysis of the Digital Mediation of Global Humanitarianism

Humanitarian organisations are central actors in the mediation of humanitarian disasters as objects of public, political and moral concern. Consequently, if we want to understand this key dynamic of world politics we have to understand how aid organisations use media. But whereas extant knowledge about media and global humanitarianism focuses primarily on issues related to discourses and images of

Combined Transcriptomic and Protein Array Cytokine Profiling of Human Stem Cells from Dental Apical Papilla Modulated by Oral Bacteria

Stem cells from the apical papilla (SCAP) are a promising resource for use in regenerative endodontic treatment (RET) that may be adversely affected by oral bacteria, which in turn can exert an effect on the success of RET. Our work aims to study the cytokine profile of SCAP upon exposure to oral bacteria and their supernatants—Fusobacterium nucleatum and Enterococcus faecalis—as well as to establ

Metabolome-Defined Obesity and the Risk of Future Type 2 Diabetes and Mortality

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is a key risk factor for type 2 diabetes; however, up to 20% of patients are normal weight. Our aim was to identify metabolite patterns reproducibly predictive of BMI and subsequently to test whether lean individuals who carry an obese metabolome are at hidden high risk of obesity-related diseases, such as type 2 diabetes.RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Levels of 108 metabolites we

QT interval Adaptation to Heart Rate Changes in Atrial Fibrillation as a Predictor of Sudden Cardiac Death

Objective: The clinical significance of QT interval adaptation to heart rate changes has been poorly investigated in atrial fibrillation (AF), since QT delineation in the presence of f-waves is challenging. Therefore, the objective of the present study is to investigate new techniques for QT adaptation estimation in permanent AF. Methods: A multilead strategy based on generalized periodic componen

Tunable phononic bandgap materials designed via topology optimization

Topology optimization is used to design phononic bandgap materials that are tunable by mechanical deformation. A periodic media is considered, which due to the assumption of length scale separation, allows the dispersion relations to be obtained by analyzing a single unit cell subjected to Floquet–Bloch boundary conditions. A finite macroscopic deformation is applied to the unit cell to affect its

Physical Activity Levels, Perceived Body Appearance, and Body Functioning in Relation to Perceived Wellbeing Among Adolescents

This study aimed to investigate self-reported physical activity levels, perceived body appearance, and body functioning in relation to perceived wellbeing among adolescents. A cross-sectional survey was performed in four upper secondary schools in one municipality in southern Sweden. Data were obtained from questionnaires completed by 1,491 adolescents (55.4% females; median age 16; range 15–17 ye

Game Addiction Scale for Adolescents—Psychometric Analyses of Gaming Behavior, Gender Differences and ADHD

Background: Internet gaming disorder (IGD) was recently added in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder as a “condition for further studies.” There is no consensus regarding which rating scales should be used but many scholars suggest the GASA (Game Addiction Scale for Adolescents) and a ranking of the criteria, “the core approach” to avoid over-diagnosing of disordered gaming. M

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Ulnar Nerve Entrapment at the Elbow Are Not Associated With Plasma Levels of Caspase-3, Caspase-8 or HSP27

Background: Nerve compression disorders, such as carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and ulnar entrapment at the elbow (UNE), may be associated with apoptosis and neuroprotective mechanisms in the peripheral nerve that may be detected by biomarkers in the blood. The relationships between CTS and UNE and two biomarkers of apoptosis, i.e., caspase-3 and caspase-8, and the neuroprotective factor Heat Shock

Channelling and induced defects at ion-bombarded aligned multiwall carbon nanotubes

A detailed investigation of ion channelling and defect production for a highly- ordered array of multi-wall carbon nanotubes is presented. The effects of argon ion bombardment (0.25–5 keV) carried out either parallel (top) or perpendicular (side) to their axis, have been studied by Raman, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy. Raman spectra provided evidence of channell

Elevating the Role of the Outdoor Environment for Adolescent Wellbeing in Everyday Life

In light of concerns about adolescent mental health, there is a need to identify and examine potential pathways to wellbeing in their daily lives. Outdoor environments can offer multiple pathways to wellbeing through opportunities for restoration, physical activity and socialising. However, urbanisation and new lifestyles revolving around the home and the internet are changing young people’s acces

Lateralized Readiness Potentials Recorded with Near-Threshold Auditory Stimuli in Subjects Simulating Hearing Loss

Introduction: Preparatory motor cortical responses like the lateralized readiness potential (LRP) may be useful in revealing persistent attempts to feign hearing loss. Previous studies suggest only a marginal effect of stimulus intensity on the amplitude of the LRP. However, this has not been investigated using low-intensity auditory stimuli to cue NoGo trials. We address this in an experiment whe

Polarization Effects of Transversal and Longitudinal Optical Phonons in Bundles of Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes

We report on the polarization analysis of the Raman spectrum of highly vertically aligned multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). A simple model considering the average angle distribution across the MWCNT axes accounts for the observed angular dependent Raman mode intensity. The model fully fits the experimental data, allowing to derive an average waving angle of ∼37° around the MWCNT axes and explai
