Are associations between socio-economic characteristics and exposure to air pollution a question of study area size? An example from Scania, Sweden

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have shown that exposure to air pollutants in the area of residence and the socio-economic status of an individual may be related. Therefore, when conducting an epidemiological study on the health effect of air pollution, socio-economy may act as a confounding factor. In this paper we examine to what extent socio-economic status and concentrations of NO2 in the county/

Plasma lipids and lipoproteins in subtypes of stroke

We determined plasma lipid and lipoprotein concentrations in 131 patients (95 males, 36 females, mean age 71 years) 6 months after acute stroke onset. Compared to a reference population, the alterations of plasma lipid concentrations in stroke patients were moderate. However, the stroke patients had higher levels of triglyceride and lipoprotein (a) and lower concentrations of cholesterol, high den

Effects of hydrogen peroxide on the guinea-pig tracheobronchial mucosa in vivo

Lumenal entry of plasma (mucosal exudation) is a key feature of airway inflammation. In airways challenged with histamine-type mediators and allergen the mucosal exudation response occurs without causing epithelial derangement and without increased airway absorption. In contrast, reactive oxygen metabolites may cause mucosal damage. In this study, involving guinea-pig airways, we have examined eff

Determination of transition matrices for inhomogeneous dielectric bodies by a wave propagator method

A method for determining transition matrices for inhomogeneous dielectric shells is presented. The source can be either inside or outside the shell. The method is based upon expansions of the electric and magnetic fields in vector spherical harmonics. The expansion coefficients in the shell satisfy a system of linear ordinary differential equations in the radial direction. The expansion coefficien

How representative are clinical study patients with asthma or COPD for a larger "real life" population of patients with obstructive lung disease?

Evidence-based medicine is a corner stone in treatment decision making and large randomised, clinical trials are usually designed in order-to provide highly significant results. This study was conducted in order to find out to what extend a "real life" patient population with obstructive lung disease could fit into criteria commonly used in clinical research trials. As a secondary aim of the study

Caloplaca scutica, a new species from southern Ukraine.

Caloplaca sqtthfca Khodosovtsev & Sschting is described from Ukrainian Artemisia - Festuca steppes near the Black Sea. It grows on twigs of small shrubs of Halocnemum strobilaceum and Limonium sp.on salty soils, and is characterued by greenish grey areoles or squamules with punctiform to confluent soralia and zeorine apothecia with a conspicuous white pruina.

A SU-8 dish for cell irradiation

The objective of the CELLION project is radiation research at low doses. The main cell responses to low dose irradiation are bystander effects, genomic instability and adaptive responses. In order to study these effects it is convenient to make the cells addressable in space and time through locking the cell position. A new alternative dish has been developed for irradiation procedures at the Lund

DEAF SIGN LANGUAGE USERS - Prevalence and Aspects of Quality of Life in Old Age

Svårigheten att kommunicera, i kombination med åldersrelaterade sjukdomar, funktionsbegränsningarVery little is known about the consequences of aging and the wellbeing of deaf sign language users. This thesis contributes to filling this knowledge gap. The overarching aim was to gain further understanding and to increase the knowledge about quality of life, in terms of subjective wellbeing and health, activity and social contacts, among older deaf sign language users. After having established

2-Bromoethyl glycosides for synthesis of glycoconjugates on solid support

2-Bromoethyl glycosides can easily and in high yields be transformed into sulfones by treatment with a suitable thiol followed by oxidation with mCPBA. The observation that the so formed sulfones were cleaved by treatment with NaOMe/MeOH was used to design a new safety catch linker for synthesis of glycoconjugates on solid support. Reliability and responsiveness of elbow trajectory tracking in chronic poststroke hemiparesis

This study established the reliability of a novel upper-limb trajectory-tracking task for assessment of perceptual motor control in hemiparetic adults. Eleven persons with chronic poststroke hemiparesis (mean 58.6 months) and eleven nondisabled control subjects performed an elbow flexion-extension task against a low-resistance isotonic load at three speeds: 25degrees/s, 45degrees/s, and 65degrees/

The effects of small roundabouts on emissions and fuel consumption: a case study

The effects of small roundabouts on emissions and fuel consumption were evaluated using the “car-following” method in a before/after study. The results showed that at a roundabout replacing a signalised junction, CO emissions decreased by 29%, NOx emissions by 21%, and fuel consumption by 28%. At roundabouts, replacing yield regulated junctions, CO emissions increased on average by 4%, NOx emissio

Six X-linked agammaglobulinemia-causing missense mutations in the src homology 2 domain of Bruton's tyrosine kinase: Phosphotyrosine-binding and circular dichroism analysis

Src homology 2 (SH2) domains recognize phosphotyrosine (pY)-containing sequences and thereby mediate their association to ligands. Bruton's tyrosine kinase (Btk) is a cytoplasmic protein tyrosine kinase, in which mutations cause a hereditary immunodeficiency disease, X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA). Mutations have been found in all Btk domains, including SH2, We have analyzed the structural and

Embodied Rituals and Ritualized Bodies : Tracing Ritual Practices in Late Mesolithic Burials

This thesis explores the ritual dimensions of the mortuary practices in the late Mesolithic cemeteries at Skateholm in Southern Sweden and Vedbæk-Bøgebakken in Eastern Denmark. With a combination of methods and theories that all focus on the ritual practices as action, a new approach to burials in archaeology is proposed. Special attention is given to the treatment of the body after death, which i

"Institutions", What Is In a Word? A Critique of the New Institutional Economics

This thesis is a critique of the New Institutional Economics (NIE) in economic history. The focus is on explanations to the origin and development of capitalist institutions within NIE. After a methodological discussion in chapter 1 the author investigates into how well NIE succeeds in explaining capitalist institutions. In chapters 2 and 3, a conceptual critique of the theoretical bases of evolu

Adult outcome of social function in adolescent-onset schizophrenia and affective psychosis

Objective: To examine and compare the adult outcome in a representative sample of hospitalized adolescent-onset psychoses including occupational and social aspects. Method: A total of 81 patients with a first episode of early-onset psychosis (before age 19 years) presenting to the University Hospital of Lund, Sweden, between 1982 and 1993 were followed up an average of 10.5 years (range 5.1-18.2)
