Abstract

Since Haiman's (1978) 'conditionals are topics (or conversely, topics are conditionals)' hypothesis, a variety of similarities between the two structures have been observed. Focusing on so-called reduced conditionals in Japanese, I will demonstrate that there are some important differences between them, and that their differences are as indicative of what they are as their similarities.
