Modern Greek seminar cycle: Morphological variation in Modern Greek: derivational verbal doublets
In this talk, Nikos Koutsoukos (University of Patras, Greece) examines derivational verbal doublets in Modern Greek. Verbal doublets can be defined as pairs having the same base but differing in their structural make-up (different suffix), e.g., τσιμέντοN [tsimédo] ‘cement’ > τσιμεντ-άρ(ω)V [tsimedáro] VERB-VERBALIZER.INF & τσιμεντ-ών(ω)V [tsimedóno] VERB-VERBALIZER.INF ‘(to) cement’ (Koutsoukos & Efthymiou 2021). Τhe members of these groups may show different types of semantic relations. He analyzes the formal properties of the bases and also analyzes the semantic distance between the verbs of the morphological doublets. Following Fradin (2019), Koutsoukos & Efthymiou (2021), and Efthymiou & Koutsoukos (2024a, 2024b), he assumes that the semantic distance of the derivational doublets forms a continuum ranging from full semantic overlap to no semantic overlap.
