LING-SEMINAR: Kim Ebensgaard Jensen (University of Copenhagen)--Association rules in the context of collostructional analysis
Given that usage is extremely complex and multifaceted, researchers within functional cognitive linguistics and, specifically, construction grammar, have started advocating for the use of methods that allow analysts to address grammatical (and other linguistic) phenomena as multidimensional entities. Specifically, researchers within the tradition of collostructional analysis with an interest in the multidimensionality of constructions call for application of multivariate methods and a number of multivariate methods have already seen use in this context. Very recently, the data-mining technique Association Rules has been added to the inventory of multivariate methods applied within usage-based analysis and description and has proven to be a powerful way to address constructions in a multidimensional perspective. This talk introduces the basics of the application of Association Rules in in the study of grammatical (and other linguistic) phenomena as multidimensional entities and also discusses somme of its challenges. While this talk focuses on language, the method originated as a way to identify purchasing patterns in point-of-sale analysis and thus has a broad applicability range and might be of interest in the Digital Humanities more broadly. Hopefully, there will be time to discuss the application of Association Rules within other branches of linguistics.
