Associations between daily home blood pressure measurements and self-reports of lifestyle and symptoms in primary care : the PERHIT study

OBJECTIVE: To explore in a primary care setting the associations between patients' daily self-measured blood pressure (BP) during eight weeks and concurrent self-reported values of wellbeing, lifestyle, symptoms, and medication intake. We also explore these associations for men and women separately.DESIGN AND SETTING: The study is a secondary post-hoc analysis of the randomised controlled trial PE

Diffusion MRI tracks cortical microstructural changes during the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease

There is increased interest in developing markers reflecting microstructural changes that could serve as outcome measures in clinical trials. This is especially important after unexpected results in trials evaluating disease-modifying therapies targeting amyloid-β (Aβ), where morphological metrics from MRI showed increased volume loss despite promising clinical treatment effects. In this study, ch

The hidden epidemic : Uncovering incidental fatty liver disease and its metabolic comorbidities by datamining in a hospital data lake – A real-world cohort study

Aims: To identify individuals with incidental fatty liver disease (FLD), and to evaluate its prevalence, metabolic co-morbidities and impact on follow-up. Methods: We leveraged the data-lake of Helsinki Uusimaa Hospital district (Finland) with a population of 1.7 million (specialist and primary care). A phrase recognition script on abdominal imaging reports (2008–2020) identified/excluded FLD or c

Impact of Underweight, Overweight, and Obesity on Health-Related Quality of Life in Children with Tetralogy of Fallot Variants

Traditional cardiovascular risk factors put patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) at increased risk for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether body mass index (BMI) is associated with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with variants of Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). Patients and parents of children with variants of TOF–CHD were aske

Blood group O is associated with ARDS development but exhibits lower mortality in the intensive care unit–A retrospective multicentre study

Background: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a common cause of respiratory failure in the intensive care unit (ICU). Previous studies have suggested that blood group A increases the risk of developing ARDS following sepsis and major trauma. This study investigated the association between ABO and Rh blood groups and ARDS development and mortality in ARDS. Methods: Patients admitted to

Diffusion weighted magnetic resonance spectroscopy revealed neuronal specific microstructural alterations in Alzheimer’s disease

In Alzheimer’s disease, reconfiguration and deterioration of tissue microstructure occur before substantial degeneration become evident. We explored the diffusion properties of both water, a ubiquitous marker measured by diffusion MRI, and N-acetyl-aspartate, a neuronal metabolite probed by diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance spectroscopy, for investigating cortical microstructural changes downs

Polymorphisms in Intron 1 of HLA-DRA Differentially Associate with Type 1 Diabetes and Celiac Disease and Implicate Involvement of Complement System Genes C4A and C4B

Polymorphisms in genes in the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class II region comprise the most important inherited risk factors for many autoimmune diseases including type 1 diabetes (T1D) and celiac disease (CD): both diseases are positively associated with the HLA- DR3 haplotype (DRB1*03:01-DQA1*05:01-DQB1*02:01). Studies of two different populations have recently documented that T1D susceptibili

Novel diagnostic methods and potential treatments in cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction

General Aim: To investigate novel diagnostic tools and treatment options for cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction (CVAD) patients, focusing on syncope, orthostatic intolerance, and heart failure (HF).Background: CVAD includes common clinical entities such as vasovagal syncope (VVS) postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and orthostatic hypotension (OH). Also, CVAD plays an important role

Civil-military cooperation in the early response to the COVID-19 pandemic in six European countries

Background The COVID-19 pandemic has presented many countries with significant health system and economic challenges. The role of civil-military cooperation in a health crisis of the magnitude presented by COVID-19 remains virtually unexplored. This review aims to detect and identify typologies, if any, of associations between security or military systems and the national response measures during

Doing and belonging : A photo-elicitation study on place attachment of older adults living in depopulated rural areas

Background: The relationship between doing and belonging is rooted in individuals’ engagement in meaningful occupations, which contributes to their sense of connectedness. The meaningfulness of occupation relates closely to the context in which it is performed. However, despite its importance, context is often overlooked and underexplored. Aim: To explore how older adults living in depopulated rur

Genome-wide analysis in over 1 million individuals of European ancestry yields improved polygenic risk scores for blood pressure traits

Hypertension affects more than one billion people worldwide. Here we identify 113 novel loci, reporting a total of 2,103 independent genetic signals (P < 5 × 10−8) from the largest single-stage blood pressure (BP) genome-wide association study to date (n = 1,028,980 European individuals). These associations explain more than 60% of single nucleotide polymorphism-based BP heritability. Comparing to

Variability of polygenic prediction for body mass index in Africa

Background: Polygenic prediction studies in continental Africans are scarce. Africa’s genetic and environmental diversity pose a challenge that limits the generalizability of polygenic risk scores (PRS) for body mass index (BMI) within the continent. Studies to understand the factors that affect PRS variability within Africa are required. Methods: Using the first multi-ancestry genome-wide associa

Identification of an osteopontin-derived peptide that binds neuropilin-1 and activates vascular repair responses and angiogenesis

The osteopontin-derived peptide FOL-005 stimulates hair growth. Using ligand-receptor glyco-capture technology we identified neuropilin-1 (NRP-1), a known co-receptor for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptors, as the most probable receptor for FOL-005 and the more stable analogue FOL-026. X-ray diffraction and microscale thermophoresis analysis revealed that FOL-026 shares binding si
