Hemodynamics and jugular venous oxygen saturation during carotid endarterectomy: a comparison between general and locoregional anesthesia.

AIM: To study hemodynamic and blood oxygenation changes in patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy (CEA) under general (GA) or locoregional (LRA) anesthesia. METHODS: Prospective non-randomized study including 50 patients undergoing CEA (31 men, mean age 72 (range 50-84) years-old under GA (N.=23) or LRA (N.=27). Systemic blood pressure, ECG, venous oxygen saturation in the ipsilateral jugular

Predicting Later Study Withdrawal in Participants Active in a Longitudinal Birth Cohort Study for 1 Year: The TEDDY Study.

OBJECTIVE : To identify predictors of later study withdrawal among participants active in The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY) for 1 year. METHODS : Multiple logistic regression was used to discriminate 3,042 children active in TEDDY for the first 3 years from 432 children who withdrew in Years 2 or 3. Predictor variables were tested in blocks-demographic, maternal lifes

hTERT T-1327/C polymorphism is not associated with age-related telomere attrition in peripheral blood

Regulation of the telomerase catalytic subunit, hTERT, is a complex process accomplished on many levels. Transcription of the hTERT gene has been widely studied but less is known about the implication of genetic variations. Recently, a functional T to C transition polymorphisin was indicated 1327 bp upstream the hTERT transcription starting site. The C-1327/C genotype was associated with shorter t

The Meeting in East-West Negotiations in Post-Soviet Russia

Intercultural communication poses challenges to East-West negotiations in the post Cold War era. The "meeting" in East-West negotiations is a metaphor for the processes that were set in motion when parties representing Western and Eastern organizations respectively negotiated on cooperation projects. The projects in question were of two types: the profit driven type (joint ventures), and the NGO,

Faraway, so Close! : The Changing Geographies of Regional Innovation

This uneven distribution has a profound impact on the differential success of regional economies. Localized learning between co-located firms and organizations provides an important source of increased innovation for regions to face challenges posed by increasingly global competiti

Factors that influence first-time mothers' choice and experience of early discharge.

Objective: The aim of this study was to describe factors that influenced first-time mothers’ choice of and experiences during the first postnatal week, after early discharge without a domiciliary visit by the midwife. Design: Interviews were analysed using content analysis. Settings and participants: The nine participants were recruited from the Maternity Department at a University Hospital in Swe

Rural to urban long-distance commuting in Sweden: trends, characteristics and pathways

The rise of ICT and the shift toward jobs with more flexibility in working hours and places of work sparked popular debates about potential for a ‘rural renaissance’. A key argument was that there are increasing possibilities to live in the countryside while being employed in large cities. This paper uses data spanning two decades to examine trends in and characteristics of employee–employer ties

Ghrelin is a regulator of glucagon-like peptide 1 secretion and transcription in mice

The gut hormones ghrelin, glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), and glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP) have been intensively studied for their role in metabolism. It is, however, not well known whether the hormones interplay and regulate the secretion of each other. In this study, we studied the effect of ghrelin on GLP-1, GIP, and insulin secretion during an oral glucose tolerance test (OG

Orai channels are critical for receptor-mediated endocytosis of albumin

Impaired albumin reabsorption by proximal tubular epithelial cells (PTECs) has been highlighted in diabetic nephropathy (DN), but little is known about the underlying molecular mechanisms. Here we find that ORAI1-3, are preferentially expressed in PTECs and downregulated in patients with DN. Hyperglycemia or blockade of insulin signaling reduces the expression of ORAI1-3. Inhibition of ORAI channe

Rules and Tools in the Battle against Superbugs - A call for integrated strategies and enhanced international collaboration to promote antimicrobial drug development

The lack of treatments during the recent Ebola and Zika outbreaks dramatically exposed the vulnerability of the global health system and the dire consequences thereof. But even where therapies against infectious diseases had been available, an additional threat has gained world-wide attention: antimicrobial resistance (AMR). A growing number of microbial organisms are becoming resistant to availab

The Liver Circadian Clock Modulates Biochemical and Physiological Responses to Metformin

Metformin is widely used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes to lower blood glucose. Although metformin is a relatively safe and effective drug, its clinical efficacy is variable and under certain circumstances it may contribute to life-threatening lactic acidosis. Thus, additional understanding of metformin pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics could provide important information regarding therap

High-energy breakfast based on whey protein reduces body weight, postprandial glycemia and HbA1C in Type 2 diabetes

Acute studies show that addition of whey protein at breakfast has a glucose-lowering effect through increased incretin and insulin secretion. However, whether this is a long-term effect in Type 2 diabetes is unknown. Fifty-six Type 2 diabetes participants aged 58.9±4.5 years, BMI 32.1±0.9 kg/m2 and HbA1C 7.8±0.1% (61.6±0.79 mmol/mol) were randomized to one of 3 isocaloric diets with similar lunch

New Blood Pressure-Associated Loci Identified in Meta-Analyses of 475 000 Individuals

Background - Genome-wide association studies have recently identified >400 loci that harbor DNA sequence variants that influence blood pressure (BP). Our earlier studies identified and validated 56 single nucleotide variants (SNVs) associated with BP from meta-analyses of exome chip genotype data. An additional 100 variants yielded suggestive evidence of association. Methods and Results - Here, we
