Clinical, Genetic and Metabolic Characterisation of LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults)

Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) comprises about 10% of patients initially diagnosed with type 2 diabetes but who are positive for pancreatic islet antibodies, especially to glutamic acid decarboxylase (GADabs). The present studies focused on clinical, genetic and metabolic characterisation of patients with LADA. In LADA, the frequency of the type 1 diabetes susceptibility genotype HLA-

Residences burning

The study of residences at central places from the Late Iron Age in Scandinavia has mainly been aimed at identifying buildings of exceptional size or function. However, until recently the archaeological situation has not been detailed enough to study the sequence of a residence for several centuries and with internal changes related to internal or external factors. New excavation results from Uppå

Isomorphism, Isopraxism and Isonymism: Complementary or Competing Processes?

New institutional theory has been critizised, for describing institutionalization as a static qualitative state rather than a process. In this paper we provide an extended understanding of the process of institutionalization by replacing the mechanical concept of diffusion by the concept of translation and an analytical model of "trevel of ideas". Analyzing the field material from three cases of t

Bird orientation: external cues and ecological factors

Birds are generally capable of accurate orientation. In this thesis I present studies about the external cues and the ecological factors that influences bird orientation. A multitude of environmental cues are used to select and maintain a proper direction. These are visual cues, like the sun and the starry night sky, but other cues like the geomagnetic field, wind and odours also play important ro

Helicobacter pylori binding to gastric mucins and host glycosylation changes after inoculation

Helicobacter pylori may cause gastritis, gastric/duodenal ulcer and gastric cancer. During infection, most H. pylori are found in the gastric mucus layer, but some are attached to, or have penetrated, epithelial cells. The aim of this study is to characterize the binding of H. pylori to gastric mucins and to investigate host changes that occur after inoculation. Results: H. pylori binds to mucins

Hormone-Sensitive Lipase and Protein Kinase B; Molecular characterization in testis, adipose tissue and pancreatic beta cells.

Hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) and protein kinase B (PKB) are enzymes that in different ways are associated with lipid metabolism. While HSL is the well-known lipolytic enzyme responsible for hydrolysis of stored triacylglycerols in adipose tissue, PKB is a recently identified serine/threonine protein kinase, ubiquitously expressed and involved in signal transduction pathways induced by insulin an

Predicted fire behaviour of steels and concrete structures

Analytical modelling has opened the door for fire behaviour prediction of not only building materials as concrete and steel but akso of quite complicated concrete structures in general. This paper reflects some of the progress made within the field. A behaviour model of steel is used for coupling results from steady state and transient sate tests. A recently developed procedure is shown on how to

Genetic Characterization of Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors

Bone and soft tissue tumors (BSTT) constitute a heterogeneous group of neoplasms of mesenchymal and neuroectodermal origin. Although many BSTT are rare, it has become clear that BSTT are characterized by recurrent acquired chromosomal aberrations, and the general aim of this thesis have been to apply molecular genetic and molecular cytogenetic techniques to further characterize recurrent breakpoin

Kyrkan som sakrament. Henri de Lubacs fundamentalecklesiologi.

The thesis provides a discussion of the ecclesiology of the French Roman-Catholic theologian Henri de Lubac SJ (1896-1991) by showing how this is determined by his method of fundamental theology. I establish the term ?fundamental ecclesiology? for this inter-dependance of form and content, subject and object in theology; this is why his ecclesiology is sacramental in structure. I primarily use tex

On the role of migration for the distribution of arctic birds - a circumpolar perspective

Flexibility as well as constraints to the evolution of migration routes has the possibility of affecting large-scale patterns of geographical ranges of animals both by facilitating, but sometimes restricting, accessibility to and colonization of new regions. This dissertation concerns the broad-scale effects migration has on the distributional patterns of birds in the Arctic. I studied the circum

Immunohistochemical study of rats receiving peripheral immunization with IFNg transfected glioma cells

Malignant glioma is, with rare exceptions in younger adults, an uncurable brain tumor, as very few survive more than 1-2 years after diagnosis. Despite advances in recent years, current treatments such as surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy only prolongs the life of the patients. Because of the poor prognosis, several additional therapies have been investigated and are under development, such a

Birds in the Flow: Flight Mechanics, Wake Dynamics and Flight Performance

I share my fascination of bird flight with many others, and here I summarise my thesis on the subject. This thesis emphasises the mechanics of bird flight by focusing on flight mechanics, wake dynamics and flight performance. Gliding flight performance of a jackdaw was measured in a wind tunnel and I conclude that the current model for predicting optimum wingspan as a function of forward gliding

Resistance to activated protein C a novel risk factor for venous thrombosis

Activated protein C resistance (APC resistance) is the most common hereditary condition associated with venous thrombosis. The syndrome known as APC resistance is perfectly linked to a mutation in the gene coding coagulation FV (FV:Q506) mutation changing Arg 506 to Gln in the APC cleavage site. APC-resistance is associated with a hypercoagulable state and life-long increased risk of thrombosis. A

Nanowires for Cell Research

This study explores the interaction between living biological cells and semiconductor nanowires. Biological cells are highly complex and dynamic entities, every one of them with individual characteristics and a high degree of internal and external communication. They respond to and affect their external environment with a huge web of fine-tuned control systems. Traditional biochemical tools for

Laparoscopic or Open Antireflux Surgery - A Comparative Study with Special Reference to the Patient's Perspective

The overall aim of this thesis was to compare the effects of laparoscopic versus open antireflux surgery in a randomized clinical trial focusing the patients' subjective and objective outcome postoperatively, from a short-term and a long-term perspective. A further aim was to describe GORD patients' experiences of illness and surgical treatment and if possible to find striking characteristics rela

Human glandular kallikrein 2 (hK2) in prostate cancer: Clinical and Methodological studies

Human glandular kallikrein 2 (hK2) is a predominantly prostate produced protein with many similarities to prostate-specific antigen (PSA). Just like for PSA elevated levels of hK2 can be found in men with protate cancer. We created an assay where hK2 in serum could reliably and with negligible cross-reactivity with PSA, be measured down to 0.030 ng/mL. The assay measured free hK2 and hK2 complexe
