Long-term Survival and Cardiovascular Morbidity after Elective Open Aortic Aneurysm Repair in Patients with and without Type 2 Diabetes : A Nationwide Propensity-Adjusted Analysis

Background: Epidemiological data indicate decreased risk for development and growth of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)among patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), but DM also goes with increased cardiovascular (CV)morbidity and mortality. We evaluated the effects of DM on mortality and CV morbidity after elective open AAA repair. Methods: This is a nationwide observational cohort study of patients

Dynamic Manufacturing Costs - Describing the Dynamic Behavior of Downtimes from a Cost Perspective

Downtimes in a manufacturing cell, line or individual machines are characterized by a stochastic behavior that their frequency and their duration display. A method is presented here for analyzing this dynamic behavior from a cost perspective. An important element of the method is statistical analysis of downtimes, including empirical distribution functions pertaining to downtimes of specific types

Load combination of moisture induced eigenstresses in timber

This paper presents and suggests a load combination factor for moisture induced stress (MIS) when MIS and snow load are combined. It is argued that MIS may be considered as an ordinary load to be combined with other structural actions, for example snow load. This outlook is not new but till now the load combination factor issue has not been investigated. Based on measured snow depths and calculate

Reliability Engineering Methods for Distribution Systems - Influence of Differences between Cable Systems and Overhead Lines

One way to increase distribution network reliability is to replace traditional overhead lines with underground cables. To fully utilize these investments, network owners will have to adjust their reliability engineering methods to suit the new cable networks. In this paper different condition assessment methods as well as improved failure statistics for cable systems are considered. The paper is b

This contribution deals with the topic of transnationalism as it has developed in the humanities in the last two decades. The starting point for the reflections is the author's experiences over the course of two research projects in the years 1996 to 2003. "Musik baut Brücken?" seeks to highlight some of the definitions and difficulties of "transnationalism" which have become obvious in several de

When Do Estimated Demand Systems Automatically Satisfy Adding Up?

Conditions are presented for when estimated demand systems automatically satisfy adding up. It is shown that there exist nonlinear demand systems (such as the Almost Ideal Demand System) where adding up is allowed in the model, but where it is not automatically satisfied for the LS and SUR estimates. In these situations it is possible to test the applicability of the model as regards adding up. Th

Matrix Metalloproteinases - keys to healthier blood vessels in diabetes?

In this issue of J Endocrinol, Schuyler et al. show that intimal lesions in atherosclerosis-prone diabetic apoE-/- mice are reduced by insulin treatment. An increase of metalloproteinase-9 expression was observed in untreated diabetic apoE-/- mice; this was absent in insulin-treated mice. The study suggests that hindering of tissue-remodeling metalloproteinases may account for the beneficial effec

Glucose-Dependent Insulinotropic Peptide in the High-Normal Range Is Associated With Increased Carotid Intima-Media Thickness

OBJECTIVE: While existing evidence supports beneficial cardiovascular effects of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), emerging studies suggest that glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP) and/or signaling via the GIP receptor may have untoward cardiovascular effects. Indeed, recent studies show that fasting physiological GIP levels are associated with total mortality and cardiovascular mortalit

Gender, autoantibodies, and obesity in newly diagnosed diabetic patients aged 40-75 years

OBJECTIVE - To evaluate the frequency of autoimmune markers (islet cell antibodies [ICA] and glutamic acid decarboxylase antibodies [GADA]) and clinical features in newly diagnosed people with diabetes aged 40-75 years. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS - Two hundred fifty-nine consecutive patients (aged 40-75 years) with newly suspected diabetes diagnosed during a 2-year period were studied. The diagno

Displaced femoral neck fractures in patients 60-69 years old – mortality and patient reported outcomes in a register cohort

Trots detta uppvisade denna grupp BackgroundSeveral randomized studies have compared arthroplasty and internal fixation (IF) and found better patient reported outcome measure (PROM) and fewer reoperations for arthroplasty. But consensus is lacking regarding which method to use in the "young elderly” patients aged 60-69; IF tend to fail in up to 1/3 of the cases but can offer the benefits of a biologically intact hip if successful.

Referent grammar (RG) in computer comprehension, generation and translation of text (SWETRA)

ABSTRACT AND INTRODUCTION Theories of text and discourse have long assumed the existence of semantic objects called discourse referents, "things being talked about and referred to by pronouns and definite noun phrases"(cf. e.g. Karttunen (1976), Sigurd (1982), Sidner (1983)). Such referents are also often alluded to in sentence grammars, above all in theories of pronominalization and control -ofte

Reflexivization in referent grammar

The interpretation of reflexive pronouns has been the topic of extensive linguistic research. This paper illustrates how different types of reflexive pronouns can be inter-preted and generated within the framework of Referent Grammar, a grammar which can be run directly on the computer. The rules illustrated are to be used in the machine translation project SWETRA which translates between English,

Tightly coupled policies and loosely coupled networks in the governing of flood risk mitigation in municipal administrations

Flood risk is a complex and transboundary issue that is expected to escalate with climate change and requires to be governed by collaborative networks of actors. Municipal administrations have been suggested to have a particularly important and challenging role in such governance. Although collaborative governance has attracted intense scientific attention, empirical studies generally focus either

Waist circumference and a body shape index and prostate cancer risk and mortality

We recently found a negative association between body mass index (BMI) and the risk of localised prostate cancer (PCa), no association with advanced PCa, and a positive association with PCa‐specific mortality. In a 15% subpopulation of that study, we here investigated the measures of abdominal adiposity including waist circumference (WC) and A Body Shape Index (ABSI) in relation to PCa risk and mo

Associations of carbohydrates and carbohydrate-rich foods with incidence of type 2 diabetes

Dietary carbohydrates have long been expected to be associated with risk of type 2 diabetes; however, the associations for many carbohydrates and carbohydrate-rich foods remain inconclusive. This study analysed associations between intakes of six types of carbohydrates and thirteen carbohydrate-rich foods with incident type 2 diabetes in 26 622 participants (61% women) in the Malmö Diet and Cancer
