Snus user identity and addiction. A Swedish focus group study on adolescents

Background: The teenage years are the years when adolescents seek their identity, and part of this involves experimenting with tobacco. The use of tobacco as such, and norms among their friends, is more important to the adolescents than the norms of parents when it comes to using tobacco or not. The aim was to explore the significance of using snus for adolescents, and attitudes to snus, as well a

A prospective observational study of the effects of treatment with extended-release tolterodine on health-related quality of life of patients suffering overactive bladder syndrome in Sweden

Objective. Overactive bladder (OAB) is a chronic condition that has a profound impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). This study measured changes in bother of OAB symptoms and self-perceived HRQoL over 6 months in patients treated with extended-release (ER) tolterodine in a naturalistic setting. Material and methods. This was a prospective, single-cohort observational study of patients

Swedish snuff and incidence of cardiovascular disease. A population-based cohort study

Background: The relationship between smoking and an increased incidence of cardiovascular diseases is well known. Whether smokeless tobacco (snuff) is related to myocardial infarction (MI) or stroke is still controversial. Aim of this study was to explore whether snuff users have an increased incidence of MI or stroke. Methods: A total of 16 754 women and 10 473 men (aged 45-73 years), without his

Are Criminal Sanctions an Appropriate Punishment for Illegal Unregulated and Unreported Fishing in EU? - Sweden as a case study

Background: A major challenge of today is to protect the marine ecosystem from a total collapse. Overfishing, illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing, climate change in the sea, coral bleaching, ocean acidification, marine pollution impacts of coastal development, exotic and invasive species and last but not least all the cumulative impacts, are just some of the factors degrading our marine en

Expectations abound: family obligations and remittance flow amongst Cameroonian “bushfallers” in Sweden. A gender insight

In Cameroon, there is a tradition for heterosexual family system inherent in a patriarchal order of things; accordingly, this study shed light on how gender pervades into, and ‘force’ migrants to remit in order to fulfill family expectations at the country of origin. Contemporary academic studies and reports from various organizations have highlighted the active role of women as migrants and remit

Politics for breakfast - a study of politics, consumption and commodities in Sweden

This thesis is focused on exploring what insights a human ecological perspective could provide on the understanding and practice of political consumerism. This is divided and conducted in two sections, the first section is a theoretical discussion which is devoted to defining political consumerism and reconseptualizing some aspects and components of it as well as to positioning it in a wider and m

Sedimentology of the Bajocian Fuglunda Member at Eriksdal, Scania, southern Sweden

The Bajocian Fuglunda Member of Eriksdal consists mostly of sand, silt and coal arranged in cycles (2-4m). Each cycle generally starts with organic-rich heteroliths at the base and further up ripple-drift cross laminated and horizontally laminated fine sand follow. The coal seams at the top of the cycles are of minor thickness. Signs of soil formation occur as coalified rootlets reaching down from

Middle-Upper Ordovician trilobites and stratigraphy along the Kyrkbäcken rivulet in the Röstånga area, southern Sweden

Middle-Upper Ordovician strata are well exposed along the Kyrkbäcken rivulet in the Röstånga area of Scania. The investigated sequence dips about 40° towards the south, and comprises about 26 m of strata. It consists largely of siliceous limestones, mudstones, shales, and bentonites. The section is generally richly fossiliferous and has yielded bivalves, brachiopods, cephalopods, gastropods, grapt

Petrology and depositional history of the Campanian strata at Maltesholm, Scania, southern Sweden

Campanian sediments of the Maltesholm quarry consist of mostly coarse grained, poorly consolidated, ruditic grainstones, almost free of micrite and lime mud, with interbedded clay horizons. The main constituents of the grainstones are coralline algae and quartz. The lack of micrite and the abundance of coralline algae indicates a nearshore, shallow, high energy environment. Two different facies ma

Trace fossils and Palaeoenvironments in the Middle Cambrian at Äleklinta, Öland, Sweden

The Middle Cambrian at Äleklinta, Öland, consists predominantly of a heterolitic sequence with interbedded shale and siltstone. The sediments were deposited in a westfacing marine bay by northeastern, sometimes reversing currents. Long periods of slow mud settling alternated with short periods of silt influx. Water depth was below wave base and stream-ripples, micro-ripples and occasional wave-rip

Agglutinated foraminifera from the Campanian of the Kristianstad basin, southern Sweden

In samples consisting mainly of Campanian biocalcarenite from Maltesholm and Ullstorp 23 foraminifera species were identified. The number of species lies within the range for a normal marine environment according to Fisher α-diagrams and triangular diagrams. It is concluded that Maltesholm represents a more shallow marine environment than Ullstorp. A systematic description is included for the aggl

Depositional and petrographic response of climatic changes in the Triassic of Höllviken-II, southern Sweden

A 180 meter long core sequence of the Höllviken-II deep drilling project was investigated and divided into seven subfacies from a sedimentological point of view. Special attention were paid to criteria used for interpretation of the palaeoclimate. The lowest and the topmost parts of the investigated sequence were interpreted as beeing deposited during hot, desert-like conditions. Intervening parts
