Liability for delay in multimodal transport under the Rotterdam Rules
Predictive Modeling in Musculoskeletal Mechanobiology
This chapter provides an overview of the main concepts in mechanobiology and touches upon the experimental models that are most frequently used to study mechanobiology on a cell and tissue level. It focuses on the use of computational techniques and algorithms to simulate mechanobiological processes, and their prospective potential in clinical applications. It covers how computational algorithms h
Carriage of goods through multimodal transportation: : In search of international and regional harmonization
Secret cousins : Analogies in the construction of religious authority through "science" in Maurice Bucaille and Claude Vorilhon (Raël)
In this paper I discuss the work of two French authors who advocate a "scientific" exegesis of sacred scriptures: physician Maurice Bucaille (1922-1998) and religious leader Claude Vorilhon (alias Raël, b. 1946). Bucaille argues that the Qur'an's divine origin is demonstrated by its accuracy about natural phenomena and "scientific facts," whereas the Bible does not stand up to "scientific" examina

Do Equal Rights for a Minority Affect General Life Satisfaction?
While previous research examines how institutions matter for general life satisfaction and how specific institutions embodying equal rights for gay people matter for the life satisfaction of gays, we combine these two issues to analyze how the latter type of institutions relates to general life satisfaction. The question is how people in general are affected by laws treating everyone equally irres
Efficient Software Implementation of Stream Programs
The way we use computers and mobile phones today requires large amounts of processing of data streams. Examples include digital signal processing for wireless transmission, audio and video coding for recording and watching videos, and noise reduction for the phone calls. These tasks can be performed by stream programs—computer programs that process streams of data. Stream programs can be composed
Science facilitets and stakeholder management : How a pan-European research facility ended up in a small Swedish University town
This is the story of how a large research facility of broad European and global interest, the European Spallation Source (ESS), ended up in the small university town of Lund in Sweden. This happened in spite of the fact that a number of influential European countries were at one time or another competitors to host the facility. It is also a story about politics which attempts to illustrate how clo

Long Lost : The emotional side of identification - Complementing SIT with psychoanalytic insights
In this essay, I aim to complement social identity theory (SIT) concepts of identification with insights from psychoanalysis to address three problematic aspects: (a) SIT emphasizes cognition and often neglects emotions, (b) emotions—if mentioned —are primarily positive, and (c) SIT-based concepts can be used to inspire simplified ideas of identification management. I argue that psychoanalytic ins

Simultaneous PLIF Imaging of OH and PLII Imaging of Soot for Studying the Late-Cycle Soot Oxidation in an Optical Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine
The effects of injection pressure and swirl ratio on the in-cylinder soot oxidation are studied using simultaneous PLIF imaging of OH and LII imaging of soot in an optical diesel engine. Images are acquired after the end of injection in the recirculation zone between two adjacent diesel jets. Scalars are extracted from the images and compared with trends in engine-out soot emissions. The soot emis
Analyses of the performance of adaptive subspace detector on fluctuating target detection in system-dependent clutter background
The adaptive subspace detector in system-dependent clutter background (SDC-ASD) is proved to be able to improve the detection performance for deterministic target detection in the authors' previous study. However, the exact performance of the SDC-ASD for fluctuating target detection is still unknown. In this study, with the aid of matrix decomposition theory, the analytical performance of the SDC-
Fixed-point algorithms for frequency estimation and structured low rank approximation
We develop fixed-point algorithms for the approximation of structured matrices with rank penalties. In particular we use these fixed-point algorithms for making approximations by sums of exponentials, i.e., frequency estimation. For the basic formulation of the fixed-point algorithm we show that it converges to the solution of a related minimization problem, namely the one obtained by replacing th
Stapling in thyroid surgery. A prospective study
In a prospective study, resection of the thyroid gland by means of a linear stapling device was compared with the conventional resection technique in 12 consecutive patients with thyreotoxicosis. The median time for resection of the stapled lobe was shorter than for the conventionally resected right lobe, although the difference was not statistically significant. The median preoperative bleeding d
Serum osteocalcin levels do not change during rapidly induced hypercalcemia in healthy subjects
Since osteocalcin has been suggested to play a role in calcium homeostasis, we investigated its serum levels in 6 healthy subjects during a rapid calcium infusion. Serum levels of intact parathyroid hormone (PTH), 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25-(OH) D3] and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25-(OH)2 D3] were also determined. The calcium infusion increased plasma-ionized calcium levels from 1.25 +/- 0.04 to 1.54
Measurement of intact parathyroid hormone in the diagnosis of hyperparathyroidism
Plasma levels of parathyroid hormone were determined pre-operatively in 27 consecutive patients with clinical and biochemical signs of primary hyperparathyroidism, by the use of one assay recognizing the intact PTH molecule and one assay recognizing the mid-portion of PTH. Plasma levels of mid-molecule PTH were normal in 5 of the patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. In 4 of these patients, p
