Atmospheric Mercury Emission At Solfatara Volcano (Pozzuoli, Phlegraean Fields, Italy)

Mercury concentrations in air and in condensed steam coming from fumarolic activity at the Solfatara crater (Phlegraean Fields - Italy) were determined. In the condensed steam, mercury was found mainly associated as Hg-S complexes and showed a flux in the range from 0.9 to 4.5 g day(-1). Using the point monitor technique, high values (up to 690 ng m(-3)) of atmospheric mercury levels were observed

High disaccharide intake associates with atherogenic lipoprotein profile.

Increased plasma concentrations of small LDL particles denote an atherogenic lipoprotein phenotype (ALP) that is correlated with increased circulating TAG and reduced HDL-cholesterol. Principal component analyses of subfraction concentrations have previously been used in the Swedish population-based Malmö Diet and Cancer (MDC) cohort to identify three independent components, one pattern representi

EVAR and complex anatomy: an update on fenestrated and branched stent grafts.

Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) offers a minimally invasive treatment to patients with improved short-term and similar mid-term results compared to conventional, open repair (OR). EVAR is preferred by patients due to the reduction of surgical trauma. Approximately 20% of patients have aneurysm neck morphology which is inadequate for a standard stent graft and requires the endograft to cross vi

Structured feedback to undergraduate medical students: 3 years' experience of an assessment tool.

Background: There is a paucity of research on the effects of interactive feedback methods and sustained assessment strategies in formative assessment of students in the workplace. Aims: To investigate the outcome of long-term use of an assessment tool. Methods: Retrospective analysis of summarised assessment tools from 3 years of 464 final-year students in general practice. Quantitative data were

On singular integral equations for kinked cracks

Chebyshev polynomial techniques for solution of singular integral equations leading to square root singularities at the ends of the interval of integration are studied. It is shown that the results are less accurate when a singularity, albeit a weak one, appears between the interval ends. Typical examples are problems involving kinked cracks. Some attempts to improve the accuracy are discussed.

DONORS SELF-REPORTED EXPERIENCES OF LIVE KIDNEY DONATION-A PROSPECTIVE STUDY.

Many reports on living kidney donation describe rapid recovery. In our experience rehabilitation is rather slow. This study aimed to explore self-reported health status among living donors (LDs) three to four weeks and six months post-donation with a longitudinal design. In this study. LDs (n = 112) reported their physical and mental health by responding to a questionnaire before surgery, after th

Risk of acute myocardial infarction and stroke after discharge from in-hospital care due to complicated and uncomplicated peptic ulcer disease.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of acute cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events in patients treated for complicated or uncomplicated peptic ulcer disease (PUD) has not been ascertained completely. METHOD: All patients with in-hospital treatment due to PUD between 1987 and 2007, who did not have any past history of acute or chronic cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease, were identified through the

Properties and effects of a novel liquid crystal nanoparticle formulation of docetaxel in a prostate cancer mouse model.

Treatment with docetaxel is the standard of care as first line chemotherapy in castration resistant prostate cancer. Due to serious side effects from the commercially available Taxotere formulation, we aimed to develop a safe and effective nanoparticle formulation of docetaxel. Liquid crystal nanoparticles (LCNPs), based on phosphatidyl choline, glycerol dioleate and polysorbate 80 dispersed in ex

Brain inflammation and adult neurogenesis: The dual role of microglia.

In the adult mammalian brain, neurogenesis from neural stem/progenitor cells continues in two regions: the subgranular zone in the dentate gyrus and the subventricular zone lining the lateral ventricles. The generated neuroblasts migrate to their appropriate location and differentiate to mature granule cells and olfactory bulb interneurons, respectively. Following injury such as stroke, neuroblast

Salivary cortisol and suicidal behavior-A follow-up study.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)-axis is a common finding in major depressive disorder. Similar studies on suicide attempters are less abundant, and the results are divergent. The main aim of the present study was to investigate HPA-axis parameters by the time of a suicide attempt and at follow-up in search for associations between HPA-axis function and suici

Time to pregnancy and infertility among women with a high intake of fish contaminated with persistent organochlorine compounds

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of persistent organochlorine compounds through the dietary intake of fatty fish from the Baltic Sea on human fertility. METHODS: Information on time to pregnancy, subfertility, and infertility was collected retrospectively by self-administered questionnaires in 2 cohorts of fishermen's wives from the Swedish east (by the Baltic Sea) an

The acutely ACL injured knee assessed by MRI: changes in joint fluid, bone marrow lesions, and cartilage during the first year.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate changes in the knee during the first year after acute rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) of volumes of joint fluid (JF), bone marrow lesions (BMLs), and cartilage volume (VC), and cartilage thickness (ThCcAB) and cartilage surface area (AC). To identify factors associated with these changes. METHODS: Fifty-eight subjects (mean age 26 years, 16 women) with an

Serotonin activates MAP kinase and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways in prostate cancer cell lines.

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to examine the effects of 5-HT on extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (Erk1/2) and Akt pathways in prostate cancer (PC) cells. METHODS: PC cell lines PC-3, Du145, and LNCaP stimulated with 5-HT in the presence of MEK or PI3K inhibitors and 5-HT receptor subtype 1A antagonist were analyzed by Western blotting and immunofluorescence. The proliferation assay Br

The pandemic of type 2 diabetes is threatening the entire world population. The number of obese people in the world has quadrupled over the last 30 years. It is clear that the human genome has not undergone such a rapid change, and thus alone does not explain the increased obesity. In fact, the rapidly changing society seems to be on a collision course with the genome. Through gene research we may

CYLD: a deubiquitination enzyme with multiple roles in cancer.

The post-translational modification of different proteins via direct ubiquitin attachment is important for various cellular processes. Dysregulation of components of the ubiqutin system have been linked to many diseases including cancer. CYLD is a deubiquitination enzyme that can cleave the lysine 63-linked polyubiquitin chains from target proteins and regulate cell survival or cell proliferation.

Accelerometer-measured daily physical activity related to aerobic fitness in children and adolescents.

Maximum oxygen uptake ([Vdot]O(2PEAK)) is generally considered to be the best single marker for aerobic fitness. While a positive relationship between daily physical activity and aerobic fitness has been established in adults, the relationship appears less clear in children and adolescents. The purpose of this paper is to summarise recently published data on the relationship between daily physical

Atrial fibrillatory rate and risk of stroke in atrial fibrillation.

Aims In atrial fibrillation (AF), a relation between electrocardiogram (ECG) parameters such as fibrillatory wave amplitude and stroke has been sought with conflicting results. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that the atrial fibrillatory rate of surface ECG lead V1 is related to stroke risk and may consequently be helpful for identifying high-risk patients. Methods and results Atrial fibri
