Development and Modernity in Hofstede's Culture's Consequences: A Postcolonial Reading

Along with an increasingly globalized business environment and a strongly held corporate belief that the world can be rationally managed, the last two decades have witnessed a growing demand for normative models dealing with cross-cultural management issues. This trend has allowed cross-cultural management to establish itself as a significant research field, with much of the initial inspiration co

Solution structures of human and porcine beta-microseminoprotein

beta-Microseminoprotein (MSP) is a small cysteine-rich protein (molecular mass about 10 kDa) first isolated from human seminal plasma and later identified in several other organisms. The function of MSP is not known, but a recent study has shown MSP to bind CRISP-3, a protein present in neutrophilic granulocytes. The amino acid sequence is highly variable between species raising the question of th

Two-particle correlation functions in projectilelike emission experiments at very forward angles

Projectilelike fragment emission is studied via two-particle correlation functions, constructed from coincidence data detected at very forward angles (0.7degreesless than or equal totheta(lab)less than or equal to7degrees) in the E/A=44 and 77 MeV Ar-40+Al-27 reactions. The shape of the proton-proton correlation function is unexpected. Possible origins of this effect are discussed and a way to ree

Tilt anisoplanatism in laser-guide-star-based multiconjugate adaptive optics. Reconstruction of the long exposure point spread function from control loop data

A method is presented for estimating the long exposure point spreadfunction (PSF) degradation due to tilt anisoplanatism in alaser-guide-star-based multiconjugate adaptive optics systems fromcontrol loop data. The algorithm is tested in numerical Monte Carlosimulations of the separately driven low-order null-mode system, and isshown to be robust and accurate with less than 10 relative error inboth

Economic growth, energy consumption and CO2 emissions in Sweden 1800-2000.

Jordbrukssamhället har gett vika fLarge transformations of technologies have occurred in the Swedish economy during the last two centuries, resulting in higher income, better quality of products and changing composition of GDP. An agrarian society has given way to an industrial society and lately to a post-industrial phase. The energy supply systems have changed, from traditional energy carriers, such as firewood and muscle energy

Lower limb lymphedema: Experiences and perceptions of cancer patients in the late palliative stage

Lower limb lymphedema (LLL) is a common but neglected problem in palliative cancer patients. No studies have focused on these patients' experiences of lymphedema. The aims of this study were to explore patients' experiences regarding LLL and how they manage to deal with this in the late palliative stage. Methods: Thirteen patients with cancer-related LLL were included to satisfy a maximum variatio

CCL25 mediates the localization of recently activated CD8alphabeta(+) lymphocytes to the small-intestinal mucosa.

The recruitment of antigen-specific T lymphocytes to the intestinal mucosa is central to the development of an effective mucosal immune response, yet the mechanism by which this process occurs remains to be fully defined. Here we show that the CC chemokine receptor 9 (CCR9) is selectively and functionally expressed on murine alpha(E)beta(7)(+) naive CD8alphabeta(+) lymphocytes and a subset of rece

Fracture rate in a population-based sample of men in Reykjavik

The population-based Reykjavik Heart Study, started in 1967, aims at finding and evaluating risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. It included 4,137 men born between 1907 and 1934 and we examined all fractures recorded in these subjects from January 1977 until the end of December 2000, or death. Their mean age at the start of this study was 54 (42-69) years and the mean follow-up time 19 years.

The himanimides, new bioactive compounds from Serpula himantoides (Fr.)Karst.

In a screening of basidiomycete cultures from Chile for the production of antibiotics we identified a Serpula himantoides strain as a producer of metabolites inhibiting the growth of bacteria and fungi. Bioactivity guided purification resulted in the isolation of four new antibiotics. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods. All four compounds are succinimide and maleimide deriva

A 8-bit 100-MHz CMOS linear interpolation DAC

An 8-bit 100-MHz CMOS linear interpolation digital-to-analog converter (DAC) is presented. It applies a time-interleaved structure on an 8-bit binary-weighted DAC, using 16 evenly skewed clocks generated by a voltage-controlled delay line to realize the linear interpolation function. The linear interpolation increases the attenuation of the DAC's image components. The requirement for the analog re

Direct Propane Ammoxidation to Acrylonitrile: Kinetics and Nature of the Active Phase

The kinetics of the direct synthesis of acrylonitrile from propane on V-Sb-Al-(W) mixed oxides indicate that acrylonitrile (ACN) forms by two parallel pathways, one directly from propane and the second, which is the prevalent path, through the intermediate formation of propylene (C3=). The limiting factor in the formation of ACN is the relative slowness of the step of allylic oxidation to ACN of t

The organization of articulator gestures: A comparison of Swedish, Bulgarian and Greenlandic.

This paper reports speech articulator gestures in Swedish, Bulgarian, and Greenlandic to study universal and language-specific components in articulation. This work is based on analysis of movements of individual articulators from x-ray motion films of speech, and continues from previous reports from this study by Wood [J. Phon. 7, 25–43 (1979); 19, 281–292 (1991); Proc. 3rd Conf. I.C.P.L.A., 191–

Modeling multicylinder paper drying - Validation of a new simulation program

A mathematical model was developed for the drying of paper in a multi-cylinder drying section. The model is based on the unsteady state, one-dimensional heat conduction equation, which is applied to both the cylinder shell and the paper web. No internal mass transfer phenomena were modeled explicitly. Great emphasis ws placed on finding the proper heat and mass transfer coefficients that are integ
