Protein kinases in hormonal regulation of adipocyte metabolism.

Abstract Along with liver and muscle tissue, adipose tissue helps maintain normal levels of glucose and lipids in the blood and has a very important role when it comes to storing lipids that can provide whole-body energy. After a meal is ingested, adipocytes take up glucose from the circulation and use it as a substrate for synthesis of new fatty acids (FAs) in a process known as de novo fatty

Growth of a short fatigue crack - A long term simulation using a dislocation technique

In this study, the growth of a short edge crack during more than 14 000 cycles of fatigue loading is investigated in detail. An edge crack, in a semi-infinite body with no pre-existing obstacles present, is modelled in a boundary element approach by a distribution of dislocation dipoles. The fatigue cycles are fully reversed (R = -1), and the load range is well below the threshold for long fatigue

Influence of the Electrode Material on the Electrochemical Behavior of Carbon Paste Electrodes Modified with Meldola Blue and Methylene Green Adsorbed on a Synthetic Zeolite

Carbon paste electrodes modified with a phenoxazine derivative, Meldola blue, and a phenothiazine derivative, methylene green, both strongly adsorbed on a synthetic zeolite were investigated using either glassy carbon powder (Sigradur K, SK) or single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) as conductive electrode material. In the case of SWCNT based electrodes, the formal potential of both mediators was

A Welch Method Approximation of the Thomson Multitaper Spectrum Estimator

The Thomson multitaper estimator has become successful for spectrum analysis in many application areas. From the aspect of efficient implementation, the so called Welch or WOSA- Weighted Overlap Segment Averaging, has advantages. In the Welch estimator, the same, time-shifted, window is applied to the data-sequence. In this submission, the aim is to find a Welch estimator structure which has a sim

The validation of evacuation simulation models through the analysis of behavioural uncertainty

Both experimental and simulation data on fire evacuation are influenced by a component of uncertainty caused by the impact of the unexplained variance in human behaviour, namely behavioural uncertainty (BU). Evacuation model validation studies should include the study of this type of uncertainty during the comparison of experiments and simulation results. An evacuation model validation procedure i

Clinical trial: colectomy after rescue therapy in ulcerative colitis-3-year follow-up of the Swedish-Danish controlled infliximab study

P>Background The long-term efficacy of infliximab as rescue therapy in steroid-refractory ulcerative colitis is not well described. Aim To examine the long-term efficacy of infliximab as a rescue therapy through a 3-year follow-up of a previous placebo-controlled trial of infliximab in acute steroid-refractory ulcerative colitis. Method In the original study, 45 patients were randomized to a singl

Asporin competes with decorin for collagen binding, binds calcium and promotes osteoblast collagen mineralization

The interactions of the ECM (extracellular matrix) protein asporin with ECM components have previously not been investigated. Here, we show that asporin binds collagen type I. This binding is inhibited by recombinant asporin fragment LRR (leucine-rich repeat) 10-12 and by full-length decorin, but not by biglycan. We demonstrate that the polyaspartate domain binds calcium and regulates hydroxyapati

Case Endings in Spoken Standard Arabic

As such it is a grammatical system learned by native speakers of Arabic through formal education. Case endings are traditionally regarded as an essential feature of Standard Arabic, but morphological case endings are used only sporadically in extemporaneous speech in formal situations where Standa

Teachers' interpretation of Bildung in practice: examples from higher education in Sweden and Denmark

While higher education is expected to prepare students so they can reflect and act in relation with a changing world, many structural forces instead favour procedural learning. There are fundamental contradictions between the aim of independent thinking and using standardised assessment, as well as between reasoning/speaking as an emancipatory force, and teaching as explanation. Other contradictio

A common variant at the TERT-CLPTM1L locus is associated with estrogen receptor-negative breast cancer

Estrogen receptor (ER)-negative breast cancer shows a higher incidence in women of African ancestry compared to women of European ancestry. In search of common risk alleles for ER-negative breast cancer, we combined genome-wide association study (GWAS) data from women of African ancestry (1,004 ER-negative cases and 2,745 controls) and European ancestry (1,718 ER-negative cases and 3,670 controls)

Multi-lepton production at high transverse momenta in ep collisions at HERA

Processes leading to a final state with at least two high transverse momentum leptons (electrons or muons) are studied using the full e(+/-) p data sample collected by the H1 experiment at HERA. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 463 pb(-1). Di-lepton and tri-lepton event classes are investigated. Cross sections of the production of e(+)e(-) and mu(+)mu(-) pairs are derived in a re

The Usefulness of Negative Valve Overlap for Gasoline Partially Premixed Combustion, PPC

Partially premixed combustion has the potential of high efficiency and simultaneous low soot and NOx emissions. Running the engine in PPC mode with high octane number fuels has the advantage of a longer premix period of fuel and air which reduces soot emissions, even at higher loads. The problem is the ignitability at low load and idle operating conditions. The objective is to investigate the use

Feasibility of neuromuscular training in patients with severe hip or knee OA: The individualized goal-based NEMEX-TJR training program

Background: Although improvements are achieved by general exercise, training to improve sensorimotor control may be needed for people with osteoarthritis (OA). The aim was to apply the principles of neuromuscular training, which have been successfully used in younger and middle-aged patients with knee injuries, to older patients with severe hip or knee OA. We hypothesized that the training program

Symboler i Dalby

Interpretations of the church, monastery and manor of Dalby have focused primarily on the history and functions of the buildings, but symbolic interpretations have been involved too. The article discusses four categories of symbolic interpretations: Power Symbols, Cosmic Symbols, Biblical Symbols and Geographical Symbols. The conclusion is that it is hard, when dealing with specific buildings, to
