Fundamental, binary combination, and overtone modes in methoxy adsorbed on Cu(100): Infrared spectroscopy and ab initio calculations

Using surface infrared absorption spectroscopy, we have measured and assigned the vibrational spectra of six different methoxy isotopotners adsorbed on a Cu(100) surface in great detail. The assignments are based on ab initio calculations of the vibrational mode frequencies of all six isotopomers for a methoxy-Cu-5 complex. By combining different IR detectors and optical filters, we observe many,

Light deflection and convection in diffusion experiments using holographic interferometry

A study of the effect of light deflection during diffusion studies of ethanol into agarose gel using holographic laser interferometry is presented. Furthermore it also demonstrates how a diffusive flux could give rise to a convective flux in holographic laser interferometry experiments. The convective and diffusive mass transfer is also theoretically compared in both a liquid phase and a gel phase

Increased risk of acute myocardial infarction and elevated levels of C-reactive protein in carriersof the Thr-87 variant of the ATP receptor P2Y11.

Aims Extracellular ATP acting on the P2Y(11) receptor regulates inflammatory cells. We hypothesized that polymorphisms in the receptor could influence the risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Methods and results In the Malmo diet and cancer AMI case-control study (n = 3732) the P2Y(11) gene Thr-87 polymorphism was present in 19.8% of the controls and 22.9% in AMI patients (OR 1.21; P = 0.03)

Search for pentaquarks in the hadronic decays of the Z boson with the DELPHI detector at LEP

The quark model does not exclude states composed of more than three quarks, like pentaquark systems. Controversial evidence for such states has been published in the last years, in particular: for a strange pentaquark Theta(1540)(+); for a double-strange state, the Xi(1862)(--), subsequently called Phi(1860)--; and for a charmed state, the Theta(c)(3100)(0). If confirmed, a full pentaquark family

Multiconjugate adaptive optics for large telescopes: analytical control of the mirror shapes

We present an analytical algorithm for deriving the shapes of the deformable mirrors to be used for multiconjugate adaptive correction on a large telescope. The algorithm is optimal in the limit where the overlap of the wave-front contributions from relevant atmospheric layers probed by the guide stars is close to the size of the pupil. The fundamental principle for correction is based on a minimi

The vibrational spectrum of H2O3.

This report presents positive infrared spectroscopic identification of H2O3, a higher oxide of hydrogen of importance for the understanding of the chain formation ability of atomic oxygen and a possible intermediate in hydrogen oxygen radical chemistry. All fundamental vibrations of H2O3, isolated in an argon matrix, have been observed. In addition, several bands of HDO3, D2O3, and H2(16)O2(18)O h

A von Willebrand factor-binding protein from Staphylococcus lugdunensis

In the present study, a phage display library covering the genome of Staphylococcus lugdunensis, was affinity-selected against von Willebrand factor (vWf). This led to the identification of a gene, vwbl, encoding a Putative cell surface protein of 2060 amino acids, denoted vWbl. The deduced protein has an overall organisation typical of staphylococcal cell Surface proteins, with an N-terminal sign

Effects of glomerular filtration rate on Ficoll sieving coefficients (theta) in rats.

The purpose of the present study was to assess the role of diffusion and convection during filtration of Ficoll across the glomerular filter by comparing glomerular sieving coefficients ( h) to neutral fluorescein isothiocyanate ( FITC)-Ficoll 70/400 obtained at low ( hydropenic) vs raised ( normal) glomerular filtration rates (GFRs). The h for FITC-Ficoll was determined in anesthetized Wistar rat

Supermacroporous cryogel matrix for integrated protein isolation - Immobilized metal affinity chromatographic purification of urokinase from cell culture broth of a human kidney cell line

A new type of supermacroporous, monolithic, cryogel affinity adsorbent was developed, allowing the specific capture of urokinase from conditioned media of human fibrosarcoma cell line HT1080. The affinity adsorbent was designed with the objective of using it as a capture column in an integrated perfusion/protein separation bioreactor setup. A comparative study between the utility of this novel cry

Identification of chemicals, possibly originating from misuse of refillable PET bottles, responsible for consumer complaints about off-odours in water and soft drinks

Mineral water and soft drinks with a perceptible off-odour were analysed to identify contaminants originating from previous misuse of the refillable polyethylene terephthalate ( PET) bottle. Consumers detected the off-odour after opening the bottle and duly returned it with the remaining content to the producers. The contaminants in question had thus been undetected by the in-line detection device

Upper gastrointestinal trauma. Analysis of 45 cases of gastric, duodenal or pancreatic injury

Injuries to the upper gastrointestinal tract occurring over a 30-year period in a geographically well defined region were analyzed. The incidence was low in comparison with other abdominal injuries, but duodenal and pancreatic injuries were increasingly common in the study's last decade. The stomach injuries were mainly caused by penetrating trauma. The duodenal and pancreatic injuries most common

Upregulated TRPC1 Channel in Vascular Injury In Vivo and Its Role in Human Neointimal Hyperplasia.

Occlusive vascular disease is a widespread abnormality leading to lethal or debilitating outcomes such as myocardial infarction and stroke. It is part of atherosclerosis and is evoked by clinical procedures including angioplasty and grafting of saphenous vein in bypass surgery. A causative factor is the switch in smooth muscle cells to an invasive and proliferative mode, leading to neointimal hype

Empirical essays on Regional Specialization and Trade in Sweden

This thesis deals with the empirical testing of trade theories, traditionally used to analyze international trade, using regional data on production and trade. This thesis consists of three main essays. In the first essay, we analyze Swedish regional production. In the first part, we focus on the effects of comparative advantage in predicting regional manufacturing production. In so doing, we use

Very high-resolution spectroscopy for extremely large telescopes using pupil slicing and adaptive optics

Under seeing limited conditions very high resolution spectroscopy becomes very difficult for extremely large telescopes (ELTs). Using adaptive optics (AO) the stellar image size decreases proportional with the telescope diameter. This makes the spectrograph optics and hence its resolution independent of the telescope diameter. However AO for use with ELTs at visible wavelengths require deformable
