Design and Implementation of the Finite Element Software ForcePAD

ForcePAD is an intuitive tool for visualising the behavior of structures subjected to loading and boundary conditions. The design of the user interface aims to be as intuitive as a standard image processing software. Users should be able to design structures, apply and boundary conditions and visualise results without knowledge of the underlying nite element model.

Fingerprints of spatial charge transfer in Quantum Cascade Lasers

We show that mid-infrared transmission spectroscopy of a quantum cascade laser provides clear-cut information on changes in charge location at different bias. Theoretical simulations of the evolution of the gain/absorption spectrum for a lambda~7.4 µm InGaAs/AlInAs/InP quantum cascade laser have been compared with the experimental findings. Transfer of electrons between the ground states in the ac

Piece-rates and prosperity: evidence from the late nineteenth-century tobacco industry

This paper uses a new and detailed survey of cigar making employers and employees to investigate two related discrimination issues. First, were piece rate cigar makers – the skilled aristocracy of this industry – paid differently by gender? We find that they were, but that the differences can be more than explained by differences in characteristics such as age and experience. Second, we ask whethe

Intracerebral grafting of neuronal cell suspensions. III. Activaty of intrastriatal nigral suspension implants as assessed by measurements of dopamine synthesis and metabolism

The activity of intrastriatal grafts of nigral cell suspensions has been monitored biochemically, using radioenzymatic assays of dopamine, its major acidic metabolite, DOPAC, and DOPA accumulation after DOPA-decarboxylase inhibition. Implants of 4-9 microliter of nigral cell suspension restored striatal DA levels by an average of 13-18%, with the highest individual values reaching about 50% of con

Virtual Reality in Air Traffic Control

Air traffic control is a highly spatial work. However, there are currently no three-dimensional tools used in the education of air traffic controllers or in the operational work of air traffic control. This paper presents results from some pilot studies aiming to: -Find new techniques for visualization and editing of trajectories in air traffic control. -Investigate how Virtual Reality (VR) can co

Configuration Management for Open Source Software

Any organisation that produces high quality software merits a closer analysis of their methods such that good techniques can be transferred to other organisations. Open Source Software projects is such a case. We make explicit their underlying process for handling change management and analyse to what extent their success can be attributed to good process, tools or people. Furthermore, we discuss
