Cancer Incidence in BRCA1 mutation carriers

Background: Germline BRCA1 mutations confer a substantial lifetime risk of breast and ovarian cancer, but whether cancer at other sites is increased is less clear. To evaluate the risks of other cancers in BRCA1 mutation carriers, we conducted a cohort study of 11 847 individuals from 699 families segregating a BRCA1 mutation that were ascertained in 30 centers across Europe and North America. Met

Late Ordovician-Early Silurian facies development and stratigraphy of Jämtland, central Sweden

These deposits have been transported by considerable nappe displacement (several kilometres), and are today relatively isolated from the nearest coeval outcrops (Dalarna 250 km, Oslo Region 350 km). As a consequence, and due to the previously limited biostratigraphical control t

Satisfaction with Daily Occupations (SDO): construct validity and test-retest reliability of a screening tool for people with mental disorders

Background/Aim: In occupational therapy research and in clinical practice there is a need for valid, reliable and easily administered measures. For research and screening purposes, the Satisfaction with Daily Occupations (SDO) instrument was developed. It addresses work, leisure, domestic tasks and self-care and generates a satisfaction and an activity level score. This study investigated its cons

Reduced Toll-like receptor 4 expression in children with asymptomatic bacteriuria

Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 is essential for the defense against infection with gram-negative pathogens, but reduced TLR4 expression has not been linked to altered disease susceptibility in humans. In mice, Tlr4 controls the mucosal response to Escherichia coli urinary tract infections. Inactivation of mouse Tlr4 causes an asymptomatic carrier state resembling asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU). The pr

Nutrient limitation of autotrophic and mixotrophic phytoplankton in a temperate and tropical humic lake gradient

Nutrient enrichment experiments were carried out in three tropical (once) and three temperate (twice) lakes differing in humic content in order to examine whether there was a relationship between the limiting nutrient for algal growth [nitrogen (N) or phosphorus (P)] and humic content, and whether the prevailing limitation was connected to the relative abundance of autotrophic and phagotrophic phy

Depletion of enterochromaffin-like cell histamine increases histidine decarboxylase and chromogranin A mRNA levels in rat stomach by a gastrin-independent mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Gastrin activates histidine decarboxylase (HDC) and increases HDC and chromogranin A (CGA) mRNA levels in histamine-producing enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cells in the rat stomach. We have studied how histamine depletion by subcutaneous infusion of the HDC inhibitor alpha-fluoromethyl-histidine (alpha-FMH) affects how ECL cells respond to hypergastrinemia in terms of HDC and CGA mRNA le

A flexible runtime system for image processing in a distributed computational environment for an unmanned aerial vehicle

A runtime system for implementation of image processing operations is presented. It is designed for working in a flexible and distributed environment related to the software architecture of a newly developed UAV system. The software architecture can be characterized at a coarse scale as a layered system, with a deliberative layer at the top, a reactive layer in the middle, and a processing layer a

Cancer incidence and mortality of isocyanate exposed workers from the Swedish polyurethane foam industry: updated findings 1959-98.

Aims: To assess whether cancer incidence and mortality in chronic obstructive lung diseases were increased in the Swedish polyurethane foam industry cohort, updated with 11 more years of follow up. Methods: The mortality and cancer incidence (1959–98) experienced by a cohort of 4175 male and female employees employed for at least one year in the period 1959–87 at one of nine Swedish polyurethane

Event reconstruction in the PHENIX central arm spectrometers

The central arm spectrometers for the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider have been designed for the optimization of particle identification in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The spectrometers present a challenging environment for event reconstruction due to a very high track multiplicity in a complicated, focusing, magnetic field. In order to meet this challenge, nine dis

Antiamoebins, myrocin B and the basis of antifungal antibiosis in the coprophilous fungus Stilbella erythrocephala(syn. S-fimetaria)

Antiamoebins I, III and XVI as well as several others in minor amounts were produced by four strains of the coprophilous fungus Stilbella erythrocephala (syn. S. fimetaria) in its natural substrate and in liquid culture. The total antiamoebin concentration in dung was 126-624 mu g g(-1) fresh weight, with minimum inhibitory concentrations against most other coprophilous fungi being at or below 100

Flexible automatic memory management for real-time and embedded systems

The advent of safe languages like Java on the real-time systems scene motivates further research on efficient strategies for non-intrusive garbage collection and especially GC scheduling. This thesis presents new approaches to flexible and robust memory management from an engineering perspective and is a step towards write once --- run anywhere with hard real-time performance. The traditional app

Level structure of 92Rh: Implications for the Two-proton Decay of 94mAg

The 21+ isomer in 94Ag has recently been reported to have a two-proton decay branch to 92Rh. We have populated 92Rh through the 40Ca(58Ni,alphapn) reaction at 240 MeV, and have performed detailed spectroscopic measurements of the levels, finding new states and measuring angular distributions of gamma rays. We find no evidence for the states reported to be populated by the two-proton decay of 94Agm

Work ethics and general work attitudes in adolescents are related to quality of life, sense of coherence and subjective health - a Swedish questionnaire study

Background: Working life is an important arena in most people's lives, and the working line concept is important for the development of welfare in a society. For young people, the period before permanent establishment in working life has become longer during the last two decades. Knowledge about attitudes towards work can help us to understand young people's transition to the labour market. Adoles
