Offspring sex ratio allocation in the parasitic jaeger: selection for pale females and melanic males?

The maintenance of plumage color polymorphism in the parasitic jaeger (Stercorarius parasiticus) is still not well understood. Earlier studies indicated that selection may favor pale females and melanic males. If so, females would maximize their fitness, producing pale female and melanic male offspring. We therefore predicted that females might bias their offspring sex ratio toward daughters in pa

Importance of processing for physico-chemical and physiological properties of dietary fibre.

There is considerable loss of DM during wet heat treatment of vegetables, leading to an increase in dietary fibre. Correction for the loss of DM indicates that the effects on total dietary fibre are minor. There is, however, depolymerization of the dietary fibre polysaccharides. The degradation is related to the severity of the heat treatment. Souring, freezing and mild microwave treatment have no

Gold cleaning methods for electrochemical detection applications

This work investigates methods for obtaining reliably clean gold film surfaces. Nine gold cleaning methods are investigated here: UV ozone photoreactor; potassium hydroxide–hydrogen peroxide; potassium hydroxide potential sweep; sulfuric acid hydrogen peroxide; sulfuric acid potential cycling; hydrochloric acid potential cycling; dimethylamine borane reducing agent solutions at 25 and 65 °C; and a

Coercion in psychiatric care - patients' and relatives' experiences from four Swedish psychiatric services

The aim of this study was to explore possible regional differences in the use of coercion in psychiatric care as experienced by patients and relatives. At four psychiatric care settings in different parts of Sweden, 138 committed and 144 voluntarily admitted patients were interviewed at admission using the Nordic Admission Interview. At discharge or, if the care episode was still ongoing, after 3

Application of enzymes, sodium tripolyphosphate and cation exchange resin for the release of extracellular polymeric substances from sewage sludge - Characterization of the extracted polysaccharides/glycoconjugates by a panel of lectins

The study describes extraction of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) from sewage sludge by applying enzymes and enzymes combined with sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP). Additionally, a systematic study of two non-enzymatic extraction agents is described. The assessment of the released products is made by colorimetrical methods and polysaccharides/glycoconjugates identification by the interactio

Chromosomal aberrations in Wilms' tumour

Clonal acquired chromosome aberrations were found in 13 patients and a constitutional trisomy 18 as the sole change in 1. The chromosome number was altered in 13 patients. Numerical changes occurred in 16 patients and breakpoint of chromosome 1 in 6 patients. There was no structural alteration

Litho- and chronostratigraphy of the Late Weichselian in Vendsyssel, northern Denmark, with special emphasis on tunnel-valley infill in relation to a receding ice margin

Lithostratigraphy and chronostratigraphy of samples from 18 deep boreholes in Vendsyssel have resulted in new insight into the Late Weichselian glaciation history of northern Denmark. Prior to the Late Weichselian Main advance c. 23-21 kyr BP, Vendsyssel was part of an ice-dammed lake where the Ribjerg Formation was deposited c. 27-23 kyr BP. The timing of the Late Weichselian deglaciation is well

Pediobius sasae (Hymenoptera : Eulophidae), a new species from galls on dwarf bamboo (Sasa nipponica) in Japan

Pediobius sasae sp. nov. ( Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) is described from Japan. This new species belongs to the "eubius-complex" of species and is compared to the species of that group. It was reared from galls induced by an unidentified gall midge of the tribe Oligotrophini ( Diptera: Cecidomyiidae). The galls are formed on stems of dwarf bamboo (Sasa nipponica). Pediobius sasae is a solitary primar

Atomic structure studies using fusion plasmas

Atomic spectroscopy plays an important role in fusion research and extensive knowledge of atomic parameters is needed for plasma diagnostics. However, a magnetically confined hot plasma can be considered as a spectroscopic fight source which has some unique properties, including high temperature and low density. Fusion devices can therefore be used to tackle problems in basic atomic physics. This

Delayed single-photon self-interference

It has been suggested that a single photon can interfere with itself even if the difference between the two paths in the interferometer is larger than the “length” of the photon [Kessel’ and Moiseev, JETP Lett. 58, 81 (1993)]. The interference is regained by detecting the photons using a photon-echo process, where the absorbing atoms will, effectively, act as narrow-band filters. Such an experimen

Serial MRI in the early postoperative period after lumbar discectomy

The aim of this study was to determine MRI findings in patients successfully operated upon for lumbar disc herniation. We investigated 20 patients with a successful outcome after L4-5 or L5-S1 disc operations clinically and with MRI preoperatively, and at 5 days, 6 weeks, and 4 months after surgery. Postoperatively, T1- and T2-weighted images were obtained. At 4 months gadolinium-enhanced images w

Haplotype analysis in Icelandic and Finnish BRCA2 999del5 breast cancer families

The 999del5 mutation is the single, strong BRCA2 founder mutation in Iceland and the most common BRCA1/2 founder mutation in Finland. To evaluate the origin and time since spreading of the 999del5 mutation in Iceland and in Finland, we constructed haplotypes with polymorphic markers within and flanking the BRCA2 gene in a set of 18 Icelandic and 10 Finnish 999del5 breast cancer families. All Icela

Long-term organic farming fosters below and aboveground biota: Implications for soil quality, biological control and productivity

Organic farming may contribute substantially to future agricultural production worldwide by improving soil quality and pest control, thereby reducing environmental impacts of conventional farming. We investigated in a comprehensive way soil chemical, as well as below and aboveground biological parameters of two organic and two conventional wheat farming systems that primarily differed in fertiliza

Geographically congruent large-scale patterns of plastid haplotype variation in the European herbs Silene dioica and S-latifolia (Caryophyllaceae)

The closely related dioecious herbs Silene latifolia and Silene dioica are widespread and predominantly sympatric in Europe. The species are interfertile, but morphologically and ecologically distinct. A study of large-scale patterns of plastid DNA (polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism) haplotypes in a sample of 198 populations from most of the European ranges of both

An observational study of the level at which parents participate in decisions during their child's hospitalization.

When a child is hospitalized, the parents find themselves in an unfamiliar environment and their parental role changes. They are in a stressful and often anxiety-filled situation and it may be difficult for them to participate in decisions. The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which parents participate in decisions during the course of events when their child is hospitalized. Thi

Characteristics and outcome among children suffering from out of hospital cardiac arrest in Sweden

Aim: To evaluate the characteristics, outcome and prognostic factors among children suffering from out of hospital cardiac arrest in Sweden. Methods: Patients aged below 18 years suffering from out of hospital cardiac arrest which were not crew witnessed and included in the Swedish cardiac arrest registry were included in the survey. This survey included the period 1990-2001 and 60 ambulance organ
