Promising bioplastic derived from “poo molecule”

A new, fossil-free bioplastic is emerging. According to lab experiments, it is more durable than both regular plastic and other bioplastics, and is potentially better suited for recycling. Almost all plastic is made from crude oil, and plastic production currently accounts for 4-6% of global oil consumption. The development of renewable bioplastics is progressing, but relatively few are actually b

Did you miss out on the Citizen Science workshop? Watch it on YouTube!

The international workshop "Citizen Science" was held on the 24th of April with BECC as one of the organizers. You can watch the workshop on video, if you didn't have the chance to be there. Environmental change in the Arctic

The region is warming faster than anywhere else on Earth and its polar bears and melting glaciers have become key symbols of climate change. But the Arctic, it seems, is not as well researched as we think it is. Since the Arctic covers some 14.5 million square kilometers, and conducting research in remote locations is very expensive, time consuming and often dangerous, the result is an extremely u

Well managed forests can limit climate change

Growing forests can limit climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store the carbon in their biomass as they grow. How much carbon a forest stores varies between tree species, the forests age, weather conditions and how the forest is managed. Young growing forests store a lot of carbon, as the forest gets older the carbon sequestration capacity decreases. When trees are f

Another type of forest management would provide greater values for society

A forest management method different to those practised today would contribute to greater welfare and wellbeing for society in general, compared with current methods that mainly benefit the forestry industry. This has been shown in a new study by two researchers from Lund University in Sweden. There is an intensive debate at the moment about the best way to use the forest as a resource, not least
