Where is happiness? A cultural analysis of the emotional practices

Happiness is an affect. Affects are thought to be part of our subjective experiences. In the past, human beings have constructed complex relationships with happiness outside of ourselves. Since sociocultural values laden to happiness established various linkages with objects, happiness seemed to become materialised and accessible, which is expressed, for example, as the UN’s World Happiness Report

Bilden av kvinnlig könsstympning i Aftonbladet : En kvalitativ innehållsanalys

Female genital mutilation is a convention that is mainly practiced in about thirty African countries and in some countries in the Middle East and Asia. The topic has become more relevant in Sweden due to increased migration. While female genital mutilation is often referred to as a foreign phenomenon mass media is a main source of information. The purpose of this study was to explore how the conve

Legitimate Green Marketing Communication: A Case Study on the Tour Operator TUI

Green marketing communication in the tour operating business is an emerging field of research. In recognition of green marketing communication researchers’ and practitioners’ within the tour operating business need to achieve a more profound understanding of legitimate green marketing communication. This is because of societies and especially millennials increasing sensitivity and scepticism towar

Enhanced antibiotic tolerance occurred in multi-species biofilms

Enhanced antibiotic tolerance occurred in multi-species biofilms Multi-species biofilms existing in Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) are likely to influence the property of each species, owing to high-density biomass and constant sub-lethal concentration of antibiotics. Research on biofilms had gathered an understanding that biofilms contribute to antibiotic tolerance among bacteria that hinder

Discovery of a DARPin-based antitoxin against α-cobratoxin

Snakebite envenomations has for a long time been an overlooked problem, despite the hundreds of thousands of deaths and disabilities caused by this disease each year. However, since snakebite envenoming predominantly affects the rural areas of third-world countries, there was an absence of research funding and drive to address this profound concern. Consequently, costly and often highly immunogeni

THE NEURODEGENERATION PROCESS IN THE STRIATUM OF MICE EXPOSED TO OBESOGENIC DIETS

Obesity and diabetes are known to impact brain function and alter metabolism. Studies in rodents show that consumption of high fat and high sugar diets lead to brain dysfunction affecting memory and cognition, and increases risk of cerebro-vascular and neurodegenerative disorders. Striatum, which is involved in reward-based behaviour and motor control, undergoes changes on exposure to such diets l

A Review of the Literature on R&D and Productivity

This paper reviews the literature on R&D and productivity to provide a guideline to readers by combining all the findings in one title. According to the results, empirical studies analyse R&D spending from different angles by considering the characteristic of such spending. The results show that return to basic research is higher than return to applied R&D. Furthermore, in order to est

Enforcing Labour Rights by Means of Global Trade. Labour Provisions in Free Trade Agreements and Generalized Systems of Preferences: A Case Study on Trade Arrangements of Ukraine

The process of globalisation, accompanied by sustainable development considerations, has turned the spotlight on ties between states’ trade interests and their commitment to upholding labour rights. With negotiations on connecting the existent multilateral trading framework to the labour rights perspective at an impasse, major world economies have introduced alternative ways of linking labour conc

Kris?

This essay examines 15 news articles published in the Swedish magazine Svensk Bokhandel during the year of 2019. Qualitative linguistic analysis is used to examine what and how the magazine writes about publishing and the book market. The questions asked are: Which themes, messages, ulterior ideas and attitudes are mediated through the articles? And is there a crisis discourse in publishing? The r

Deposition of a Polydisperse Aerosol in the Upper Respiratory Tract

Just deInhaled pharmaceuticals are commonly used in the treatment of respiratory disease. This method of administration has many advantages but also poses a problem with particles being lost before reaching the target site. Particle deposition in airways is mainly an effect of inertial impaction, gravitational settling and diffusion. What mechanism influences a particle the most depends on the particle a

On the Use of Elliptic Curves in Public-Key Cryptography

In this thesis, an introduction to public key cryptography over finite fields and elliptic curves is given. Elliptic curves are introduced using affine and projective spaces. The thesis also gives an introduction to algorithms that are able to break the discrete logarithm problem over finite fields and elliptic curves faster than an exhaustive search.

Nyanländas väg in på arbetsmarknaden

Defining the Voice of Montreal: Exploring Possibilities for Human-Machine Companionship

This thesis explores the possibility for (re)defining the relationship between humans and robots with conversational interfaces. It does so by looking at the creation process of a voice and text-based virtual assistant for tourists from the perspective of critical posthumanism and posthuman performativity. In a reflexive fashion, I analyze my involvement in a tech start-up, in order to argue that,

Topology optimization of transient thermo-mechanical problems using multiple materials

Topology optimization is a powerful method for finding optimized designs for a variety of problems. In this work, thermo-mechanical problems are studied in particular and solved under transient conductive heat transfer using 2 materials plus void in the optimization. In the first part of the thesis, the theoretical background for a generic transient thermo-mechanical topology optimization problem

Principal Component Analysis for STEM-EDS images: Optimal collection parameters

STEM-EDS is a common technique used for compositional mapping in materials. The vasts amounts of raw data produced by STEM EDS is suitable for advanced analysis using methods in unsupervised machine learning. One powerful method is Principal Component Analysis (PCA) which can automatically discover significant chemical correlations in a sample. Although more powerful than classical analysis, there

Self-Confidence: The Invisible Force Behind the Gender Gap

The global underrepresentation of women in the workplace is an ongoing issue. As a connection between self-confidence and career development has emerged, the topic of self-confidence has received growing attention over previous years. A gap between male and female self-confidence has been discovered and is consequently a likely cause and impact for the global gender gap, especially in high positio
