Sensitivity of mongolian gerbils to trichloroethylene exposure during neonatal growth
Continuous exposure of young mongolian gerbils to trichloroethylene (230 ppm) was started at different times during the first month of life. The onset of exposure was accompanied by an increased number of deaths among the pups and by an immediate reduction in growth rate. The proportion of dead pups was greatest when exposure was started at birth, and decreased rapidly with increasing age at onset
Numerical computations of steady and unsteady flow in bended pipes
The steady and pulsative turbulent flows in curved pipes have been computed with two different modeling approaches; the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) technique and Large Eddy Simulations (LES). The results from computations of the flow in a single bended pipe have been compared to experimental data. The comparisons show poor agreement for the RANS technique at the exit of the bend, while
Dietary Fibre in Fermented Oats and Barley
The physiological characteristics of native and bacterial exopolysaccharides (EPS) in oats and barley-based fermented products were studied in relation to the physico-chemical properties. Article I presents a parallel-randomized double blind clinical trial using a dairy-based product (control), an oat-based product (fermented with V2, which is a mixture (1:1) of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. Bu
Critical science with the largest telescopes: science drivers for a 100m ground-based optical-IR telescope
Extremely large filled-aperture ground-based optical-IR telescopes, or ELTs, ranging from 20 to 100m in diameter, are now being proposed. The all-important choice of the aperture must clearly be driven by the potential science offered. We here highlight science goals from the Leiden Workshop in May 2001 suggesting that for certain critical observations the largest possible aperture - assumed to be
Consistency and Correction of Line-Drawings, Obtained by Projections of Piecewise Planar Objects
This paper deals with line-drawings, obtained from images of piecewise planar objects after edge detection. Such images are used e.g. for navigation and recognition. In order to be a possible image of a three dimensional piecewise planar object, it has to obey some projective conditions. Criteria for a line-drawing to be correct is given in this paper, along with methods to find possible interpret

A Reconfigurable Pipelined ADC in 0.18 um CMOS
A reconfigurable pipelined A/D converter has been implemented in a 0.18 mu m RF-CMOS process. The ADC has eight configurations with a top performance of 10 bits resolution at 80 MSPS consuming 94mW. The reconfigurability is achieved by combining the cyclic and pipelined ADC architectures giving it a low level of complexity. In the conventional pipeline mode, the measured SFDR is 69 dBFS and the SN
Asexual embryogenesis in plants
The capacity of somatic cells and pollen grains or microspores to undergo embryogenesis is an important property used in improvement and regeneration of plants. Furthermore, somatic embryogenesis as well as pollen embryogenesis show many similarities with zygotic embryogenesis and are, thus, good model systems. Pollen suspensions of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) contain a mixture of embryogenic a
De lyfter fram hennes be

Compliance or Obscurity? Online Anonymity as a Consequence of Fighting Unauthorised File-sharing
The European Union directive on Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement (IPRED) was implemented in Sweden on April 1, 2009, and was meant to be the enforcement needed to achieve increased compliance with intellectual property online, especially copyright. This, therefore, was the manifest function of the directive. The article empirically shows changes in levels of use of Online Anonymity Service
Modeling of Reverse Flow Partial Oxidation Process for Gasifier Product Gas Upgrading
Biomass gasification is one of the alternatives to producing liquid fuels and chemicals from biomass residues. The gas produced in gasification contains CO, H2, H2O, CO2, light hydrocarbons and tars. Depending on the gasifier type, operating conditions and fuel, the light hydrocarbons can contain as much as 50 % of the total energy contents in the gas. The gas also contains catalyst poisons such a

Evaluating stages of development in second language French: A machine-learning approach
This paper describes a system to define and evaluate development stages in second language French. The identification of such stages can be formulated as determining the frequency of some lexical and grammatical features in the learners’ production and how they vary over time. The problems in this procedure are threefold: identify the relevant features, decide on cutoff points for the stages, and
Wideband Reconfigurable Capacitive shunt-feedback LNA in 65nm CMOS
A differential LNA using capacitive shunt feedback is demonstrated in 65nm CMOS. The capacitive shunt feedback structure gives a wideband input matching, S11 ;44dBm for high band.
Autonomy and Metacognition : A Healthcare Perspective
Part I of the dissertation examines the cognitive aspects of autonomy. The central question concerns what kind of cognitive capacity autonomy is. It will be argued that the concept of autonomy is best understood in terms of a metacognitive capacity of the individual. It is argued that metacognition has two components: procedural reflexivity and metarepresentation. Metarepresentation in turn can be
