Some Thoughts on China's Water Problems and Recommended Measures

As the largest river, Yangtze River Basin drains 20% of China’s land surface. The Yangtze River region is so important that it accounts for 40 percent of the nation's industrial output and 35 percent of its agricultural output. The densely populated and highly developed river delta supports China's economic backbone. More than 160,000 enterprises are based along the middle and lower River reaches

Wave-packet manipulation of He Rydberg states by a seeded free-electron laser

We report a two-dimensional pump-control-probe spectroscopic study of the dynamics of singly excited He Rydberg-state wave packets with a seeded extreme ultraviolet (XUV) free-electron laser (FEL) source. A pair of coherent XUV pulses, defined by their coarse time separation and relative phase, created and manipulated the wave packets. The He atoms were postionized by infrared (IR) pulses, and the

International Human Rights Norms in the Nordic and Baltic Countries

The book is a comparative study in the status of international human rights norms in the domestic law of all the Nordic countries and the three Baltic states: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. An amazingly rapid development towards direct applicability of international human rights treaties has taken place in recent years in all the countries in question. This book provides in-depth analysis of the s

Understanding Flash Drought Dynamics : An Approach for Enhancing Sustainability in Resource Management

Drought is a multifaceted phenomenon driven by both natural climate fluctuations and human activities. Unlike traditional, slow-developing droughts, flash droughts (FDs) emerge suddenly and intensify rapidly, posing significant challenges for natural resource management. The lack of effective tools to quantify FDs exacerbates stakeholders' concerns, particularly due to the risks they pose to water

Human rights norms in 'other' international courts

This unique book examines the role and impact of human rights norms in international courts other than human rights courts. It covers a whole range of courts and jurisdictions, looking at the practice of prominent international courts, such as the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, as well as various fora of economic adjudication, including the World Trade Organis

Transport through a resonator-coupled double quantum dot

Nanoscale systems coupled to superconducting circuits offer a platform to study a variety of research questions ranging from more fundamental investigations on the quantum nature of light interacting with matter to more application-oriented ones such as quantum computing and communication. These hybrid systems have thus gained a great deal of attention in the community in the recent years and have

Career and family : Does outsourcing household work matter?

Despite the traditionally generous family policies in Scandinavian welfare states, few new initiatives have been introduced to alleviate the pressures of paid and unpaid work over the past decades. This 'double burden' of paid and unpaid work, particularly impacting women, can impact economic, demographic, and social outcomes. It becomes heavier as societies are faced by an ageing population. High-Density Standard Cell Library for Sequential 3D Integrated Circuits

Research efforts to push the integration density of circuits with technologies that transcend Moore's law have gained significant attention in recent years. This study investigates the silicon area gains of Sequential 3D technology, utilizing the third dimension of integrated circuits by accommodating nMOS and pMOS transistors in two stacked tiers with high-density and low-pitch 3D vias. The effic

Architectural terracottas from San Giovenale : Addenda and conclusions

The publication of most excavation areas at San Giovenale has made it possible to offer a much more detailed and more accurate account of the use of architectural terracottas at the site. This article presents the finds according to categories and types as well as according to their distribution in different excavation areas. It also discusses technical matters and chronological issues. A survey o

Toward an intersectional equity approach in social-ecological transformations

Non-technical summaryEnsuring more equitable transformations requires addressing how different contextual dimensions of identity, such as gender and class, hinder equity. However, previous analyses on equity have addressed these dimensions separately. We suggest advancing beyond these methods by integrating intersectional analysis into the distributive, procedural, and recognition aspects of equit

Sick sinus syndrome and high-degree atrioventricular block in dementia with Lewy bodies and other dementia subtypes : A study of ≈ 73,000 patients with dementia

INTRODUCTION: Lewy body pathology is commonly found in cardiac nervous tissue, including the cardiac conduction system. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of sick sinus syndrome (SSS) and high-degree atrioventricular block in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) compared to Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other dementia subtypes.METHODS: We included 73,619 individuals diagnosed with dementia f

Contemporary Tree Lore and the Ancient Worship of Trees : The Contributions of James Frazer to the Contemporary Study of Religion and Ecology

This chapter argues that Frazer's writings on the worship of trees contribute to the discussion on religion and ecology within the environmental humanities. Frazer's idea that animism and seeing trees as living and worthy of respect supports an ethical relation to trees has been furthered in a contemporary context where sentient trees support an ecological ethos. Frazer's idea is related to Lynn W

Ion Current-Based Knock Detection using Convolutional Neural Networks

Engine knock, an abnormal combustion phenomenon, can lead to significant engine damage and reduced performance in spark-ignited internal combustion engines. Traditional knock detection methods using acoustic sensors are prone to errors and limited by their sensitivity to sensor placement and engine noise. This study employs a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to classify knocking events using ion

Lagging fires, their implications for the process industry, test methods, and mitigative actions

Lagging fires, also known as insulation fires, pose significant risks in the process industry, arising from the self-heating of leaked combustible liquids within insulation materials. These fires typically initiate through oxidation, leading to smouldering that can escalate into larger fires or serve as ignition sources for other flammable materials. Statistics from the Swedish Contingency Agency

Reshoring before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in an advanced economy

Purpose: The purpose is to investigate how the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic changed relocation behavior in an advanced economy. We compare manufacturing relocations before and during the pandemic to identify differences and similarities over time and between offshoring and backshoring. Design/methodology/approach: We use an exploratory longitudinal trend survey approach with data f
