Silurian scolecodonts

Scolecodonts, polychaete jaws, generally occur abundantly in Silurian shallow marine successions and are known from all continents except Antarctica. The assemblages are typically characterized by taxa with labidognath, placognath and prionognath type jaw apparatuses. They commonly include species of Kettnerites Zebera, 1935, Oenonites Hinde, 1879, Mochtyella Kielan-Jaworowska, 1961, Protarabellit

An extensive polymerase chain reaction-allele-specific polymorphism strategy for clinical ABO blood group genotyping that avoids potential errors caused by null, subgroup, and hybrid alleles

Background: ABO genotyping is complicated by the remarkable diversity at the ABO locus. Recombination or gene conversion between common alleles may lead to hybrids resulting in unexpected ABO phenotypes. Furthermore, numerous mutations associated with weak subgroups and nondeletional null alleles should be considered. All known ABO genotyping methods, however, risk incorrect phenotype predictions

Accelerated storage and isothermal microcalorimetry as methods of predicting carrot juice shelf-life

The possibility of predicting the shelf-life of pasteurized carrot juice by isothermal microcalorimetry or change in pH was investigated and compared with traditional plate count results. A small increase in thermal power (2 muW), maximal increase of and acceleration of thermal power all gave rapid, well-correlated results for the shelf-life, as did pH, during accelerated storage. The effect of ac

Oxygen-induced step bunching and faceting of Rh(553): Experiment and ab initio calculations

Using a combined experimental and theoretical approach, we show that the initial oxidation of a Rh(553) surface, a surface vicinal to (111), undergoes step bunching when exposed to oxygen, forming lower-index facets. At a pressure of about 10(-6) mbar and a temperature of 380 degrees C this leads to (331) facets with one-dimensional oxide chains along the steps, coexisting with (111) facets. Furth

Measurement of beauty production at HERA using events with muons and jets

A measurement of the beauty production cross section in ep collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 319 GeV is presented. The data were collected with the H1 detector at the HERA collider in the years 1999-2000. Events are selected by requiring the presence of jets and muons in the final state. Both the long lifetime and the large mass of b-flavoured hadrons are exploited to identify events contai

Ethanol production from non-starch carbohydrates of wheat bran

Wheat bran (WB), produced worldwide in large quantities as a by-product of the wheat milling industry, constitutes a significant underutilized source of sugars. This paper describes various methods of hydrolyzing the abundant polysaccharides in bran to yield a sugar feedstock suitable for fermentation into bioethanol. Firstly, the starch in the bran was released using amylolytic enzymes. The fibro

Effects of the properties of the bacterial community on pH adaptation during recolonisation of a humus soil

A humus soil with a pH of 4.9 was fumigated with chloroform for 5 h, after which only 1% of the initial bacterial activity remained. Half of the fumigated soil was limed to a pH of 7.5. Both the unlimed soil (UL) and the experimentally limed soil (EL) were inoculated with unfumigated (UL) soil or a field-limed (FL) soil with a pH of 6.1. The pH tolerance and activity of each developing bacterial c

”Shit, jag kan också lyckas.” Om genus, funktionshinder och idrottande kroppar

The issue of this article is how disability and gender intersect when physically disabled children and youth choose to take long-term part in sports. The data has been derived from participant observations on a sport camp for youth with disabilities, and open-ended interviews with five physically disabled youngster, between 10 and 15 years old, and two table tennis coaches, 19 and 31 years old. Th

Fyllinges ugnar. Olika sätt - olika hantverkare eller experiment?

The remnants of the walls of three different iron furnaces excavated at Fyllinge 20:436, Snöstorps parish in Halland were studied in order to compare the technology behind their construction. Were they a wholly local enterprise or might itinerant iron production craftsmen be responsible for their construction? The results may be interpreted as a local development of the knowledge of furnace buildi

Impact of combinations of antineoplastic drugs on intestinal microflora in 9 patients with leukaemia.

The impact of antineoplastic drugs on the intestinal microflora was studied in 9 patients with acute leukaemia during chemotherapy and in 5 patients also during chemotherapy-induced neutropenia. Quantitative and qualitative microbiological analyses of faecal samples obtained before and during chemotherapy showed significantly increased counts of Bacteroides spp. in 3/9 patients and, during neutrop
