Droplet Formation and Growth in Polluted Fogs

Fog droplet formation and growth related to fog droplet activation were studied in a polluted region. The joint field experiments were carried out at San Pietro Capofiume in northern Italy during November 1994. It was found that the fog droplet number distribution was continuous in the size region 1-47 µm and that for most of the time the fog consisted of unactivated droplets, i.e. the droplets we

A puzzling periodicity in the pulsating DA white dwarf G 117-B15A

We present time-resolved optical spectrophotometry of the pulsatinghydrogen atmosphere (DA) white dwarf G 117-B15A. We find threeperiodicities in the pulsation spectrum (215 s, 272 s, and 304 s) all ofwhich have been found in earlier studies. By comparing the fractionalwavelength dependence of the pulsation amplitudes (chromatic amplitudes)with models, we confirm a previous report that the stronge

Inhaled methacholine does not influence the cellular composition of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid

A methacholine or a histamine test is often used to quantitate bronchial responsiveness, in studies investigating the influence of various inhaled stimuli on the responsiveness and composition of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid. Histamine has been shown to evoke an inflammatory cell response in BAL fluid. In order to test the influence of the methacholine test on the cellular composition of BAL

A robust method for ECG-Based estimation of the respiratory frequency during stress testing

A robust method is presented for electrocardiogram (ECG)-based estimation of the respiratory frequency during stress testing. Such ECGs contain highly nonstationary noise and exhibit changes in QRS morphology which, when combined with the dynamic nature of the respiratory frequency, make most existing methods break down. The present method exploits the oscillatory pattern of the rotation angles of

Hypocomplementaemia caused by C3 nephritic factors (C3 NeF): clinical findings and the coincidence of C3 NeF type II with anti-C1q autoantibodies

OBJECTIVES: The main purposes were to document manifestations associated with prolonged or clinically unexplained C3 deficiency and to approximate how often hypocomplementaemia of this kind is caused by C3 nephritic factors (C3 NeF), i.e. autoantibodies to alternative pathway C3 convertases. We also wished to distinguish between C3 NeF types I and II and to assess coincident autoantibody responses

En nordisk språkhistoria

A presentation of The Nordic languages: An international handbook of the history of North Germanic languages (vol. 1 appeared in 2002, vol. 2 in 2005). Methodical and theoretical pluralism are graned to the contributors. The general organization and periodization of the work is discussed. An outline is given how the work was intended to handle synchrony vs. diachrony, language us vs. language syst

CNI-1493, an inhibitor of proinflammatory cytokines, retards cartilage destruction in rats with collagen induced arthritis

Objective: To investigate if administration of CNI-1493, an inhibitor of the synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines and NO, protects against development of joint destruction in collagen induced arthritis ( CIA) in rats. Methods: In a placebo controlled experiment, CNI-1493 was given once daily intraperitoneally after onset of clinical arthritis in DA rats. Disease progression was studied by clinic

Evaluation of cell recycling in continuous fermentation of enzymatic hydrolysates of spruce with Saccharomyces cerevisiae and on-line monitoring of glucose and ethanol

The maximum growth rate of Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 96581, adapted to fermentation of spent sulphite liquor (SSL), was 7 times higher in SSL of hardwood than the maximum growth rate of bakers' yeast. ATCC 96581 was studied in the continuous fermentation of spruce hydrolysate without and with cell recycling. Ethanol productivity by ATCC 96581 in continuous fermentation of an enzymatic hydrolys

The high-resolution infrared spectrum of isoxazole vapor between 800 and 1700 cm(-1)

The Fourier transform gas-phase IR spectrum of isoxazole, C3H3NO, between 550 and 1700 cm(-1) was measured with a resolution of ca. 0.003 cm(-1). Ten fundamental bands in the region 800-1700 cm(-1) have been analyzed by the Watson Hamiltonian model to yield upper state spectroscopic constants. A number of local resonances have been identified in the bands and explained qualitatively, and the unobs

Toward an understanding of the Hofmeister effect: A computer game with dipoles and an ion

The solvation of ions in dipolar lattice droplets has been studied using Monte Carlo simulations. It is found that for small dipoles the solvation behavior is similar to that expected from a dielectric model. For larger dipoles, large deviations from dielectric behavior are observed. For the larger dipoles, it is found that only the first layers solvate the ion and that the more-distant dipoles te

Studies of the efficiency of granulated blast furnace slag and limestone filler in mortars - long term strength and cloride penetration

This report is the first part of the project Use of industrial by-products and filler in concrete - long term properties/durability. The aim is to improve the knowledge of long term properties/durability of cement and concrete produced using industrial by-products/fillers in order to promote an efficient, safe, reliable and increased use of such types of materials. The results presented in the rep

Effects of metabolic inhibition on cytoplasmic calcium and contraction in smooth muscle of rat portal vein

Contractions in the rat portal vein, evoked by spontaneous action potentials or depolarizing high-K+ solution, are rapidly and reversibly inhibited by hypoxia or respiratory blockade. Intracellular free calcium ([Ca2+]i) was measured using Fura-2 to evaluate the effects of metabolic blockade on excitation-contraction coupling. Spontaneous contractions were associated with transient increases in [C

Invariance properties of the negative binomial Levy process and stochastic self-similarity.

We study the concept of self-similarity with respect to stochastic time change. The negative binomial process (NBP) is an example of a family of random time transformations with respect to which stochastic self-similarity holds for certain stochastic processes. These processes include gamma process, geometric stable processes, Laplace motion, and fractional Laplace motion. We derive invariance pro

Size determination of free metal clusters by core-level photoemission from different initial charge states

We present the study of free nanoscale lead clusters using photoelectron spectroscopy and synchrotron radiation. Pb 5d core-level spectra reveal the presence of different initial charge states of the clusters created by the magnetron-based source. We suggest a method for determining the cluster size from the charge-dependent core level binding energies. Both the core-level and the valence spectra
