Sugar preferences and feeding strategies in the hawkmoth Macroglossain stellatarum

Hummingbird hawkmoths were tested for their preferences for different types of sugar. In triple choice tests, moths sucked for longer periods from sucrose than from fructose and glucose. Naive moths released in a large flight cage and monitored over 24 days, drank on average 137 mul sucrose, 67 mul fructose and 7 mul glucose daily. In an independent test, moths spent more time feeding from sucrose

Flying with the wind - Spring migration of Arctic-breeding waders and geese over South Sweden

Spring migration of arctic breeding birds, mainly waders and Dark-bellied Brent Geese Branta bernicla, was followed by tracking radar in Lund, South Sweden, during 1998-2001 in order to evaluate the capacity of these birds to exploit favourable winds. A total of 888 radar tracks were collected. Here I report on measured flight speeds, flight altitudes and winds and compare these with results from

Surviving conduction symmetries in non-linear response

In linear response, the electric conductance of mesoscopic, two-terminal devices is symmetric with respect to the direction of an external magnetic field. The conductance symmetry, in general, breaks down in the non-linear regime of transport. Here we consider semiconductor quantum dots and show certain symmetries survive in the non-linear conductance with respect to the bias voltage and magnetic

Observation and rovibrational analysis of the intermolecular NH3 libration band v(9)(1) of H3N-HCN

The high-resolution far-infrared absorption spectrum of the gaseous molecular complex H3N-HCN is recorded by means of static gas-phase Fourier transform far-infrared spectroscopy at 247 K, using a synchrotron radiation source. The spectrum contains distinct rotational structures which are assigned to the intermolecular NH3 libration band v(9)(1) (v(B)) of the pyramidal H3N-HCN complex. A rovibrati

Nuclear structure of light exotic nuclei from break-up reactions

One-nucleon removal reactions at relativistic energies have been used as a spectroscopic tool to characterise the ground state properties of several neutron-rich isotopes in the sd-shell. Using the FRS at GSI, the longitudinal momentum distributions of the emerging fragments after one-nucleon removal were measured. The relative contributions of the remaining fragments in their ground and excited s

Injury to the human median and ulnar nerves in the forearm - analysis of costs for treatment and rehabilitation of 69 patients in southern sweden.

This study analysed the costs of median and ulnar nerve injuries in the forearm in humans and factors affecting such costs. The costs within the health-care sector and costs of lost production were calculated in 69 patients with an injury to the median and/or ulnar nerve in the forearm, usually caused by glass, a knife, or a razorblade. Factors associated with the variation in costs and outcome we

A new, cleaner colour-magnitude diagram for the metal-rich globular cluster NGC 6528. Velocity dispersion in the Bulge, age and proper motion of NGC 6528

Using two epochs of HST/WFPC2 images of the metal-rich globular clusterNGC 6528 we derive the proper motions of the stars and use them toseparate the stars belonging to NGC 6528 from those of the Galacticbulge. The stellar sequences in the resulting colour-magnitude diagramfor the cluster are significantly better determined than in previouslypublished data. From comparison of the colour-magnitude

Energy Efficiency in Buildings Through Information - Swedish Perspective

The studies presented here have shown that it is fully possible to influence energy consumption through information. An increase in the knowledge among consumers will motivate them to be more energy efficient. Since several interrelated factors are involved in this knowledge level, it is difficult to establish the individual influences but such factors as the electricity bills, electricity meterin

Role of collagen type II specific antibodies in arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease resulting in destruction of cartilage and bone. The role of the B cells in RA pathogenesis clearly involves autoantibodies. Collagen type II (CII)-specific antibodies have been identified in RA synovium and synovial fluid. The work in this thesis is focused on the role of CII specific antibodies in the initiation and pathogenesis of arthr

Co-utilization of L-arabinose and D-xylose by laboratory and industrial Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains

Background: Fermentation of lignocellulosic biomass is an attractive alternative for the production of bioethanol. Traditionally, the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is used in industrial ethanol fermentations. However, S. cerevisiae is naturally not able to ferment the pentose sugars D-xylose and L-arabinose, which are present in high amounts in lignocellulosic raw materials. Results: We describe

The Interpretative Moment of European Journalism. The Impact of Newspaper Opinion Making in the Ratification Process.

This study investigates the role of political journalism in EU constitution-making. More specifically, we ask whether political journalists take an active role in shaping public preferences and opinion on European integration. An analytical framework is developed distinguishing between the critical and the representative function of media opinion-making. Journalists are found to interfere with the
